Yet despite being recognized as a biodiversity hotspot, Borneo’s forests, and the biodiversity contained therein, are being lost faster than anywhere else on the planet, with the main threats from habitat loss and hunting. Given the perceived failure of protected areas on Borneo to conserve biodiversity, some NGOs are implementing community-based conservation (CBC) and believe that win-win solutions are possible since biodiversity can be protected and human welfare improved with a single approach. However, on Borneo, where local communities were marginalized and natural resource institutions eroded during the Suharto era, the appropriateness of using CBC to protect biodiversity, especially elusive and low-density species, has not been investigated. In this thesis, I aim to advance our understanding of the conservation of charismatic endangered species on Borneo by examining the interplay of ecological and social factors in conserving the Bornean clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi borneensis), Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeaus morio), and Miller’s Grizzled Langur (Presbytis hosei canicrus), in Wehea Forest, East Kalimantan. I used camera trapping and spatial-capture recapture modeling to estimate density and inferred the vulnerability of each species to threats by using estimates of abundance and conclusions drawn from my camera trapping studies. To help understand critical social factors of the Wehea CBC that could compromise the long-term viability of these three species in Wehea Forest, I used insights from common-pool resource theory and drew on my experience of being immersed with the Wehea Dayak for almost 4 years. Given the specific ecological and social factors found within Wehea, I conclude that a win-win outcome may be not possible. Either the long-term viability of these species may need to be compromised for the sake of human well-being, or the current protected area will have to be maintained at the expense of poverty alleviation. Since the ecological and social factors found within Wehea may be characteristic across Borneo, we should be careful not to automatically assume that CBC is the most effective approach for protecting wide ranging and low-density charismatic endangered species. Both the Javan Leopard and Sunda Clouded Leopard are protected species in Indonesia and both species are listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), meaning commercial international trade is generally prohibited. To better understand the trade, and efforts to end this trade, we collected records of seizures and prosecutions relating to Javan Leopards and Sunda Clouded Leopards in Indonesia for the period 2011–2019.

This was the second part of the trip I had planned to do after my studies were finished. Initially the plan was to go to Borneo for three months, I actually have asked for advice on the forum of Mammalwatching.com for that. Later I decided to change my mind and go for South-America, even later I decided to go for a combo: first three months South-America and then three weeks in Borneo. The road to Borneo was a long and bumpy one and I also ran into some difficulties during the trip, but in the end it was all worth it. The funny thing was that literally a week before my plane left, I still wasn’t sure if I could go, so looking back I’m really glad it all worked out. I travelled by myself but I did the first thirteen days of the trip together with Duncan McNiven and Debbie Pain from England and later we did our first five nights in Deramakot with Stuart Chapman and Nick Cox. It was nice searching for mammals (and birds) with these guys and it was really cool that the four of use managed to see Clouded Leopard together on one of the last nights of Stuart and Nick. I did fly on Tawau, which is not the nearest airport if you want to go to Danum but that was because I was first supposed to go with someone else, who backed out last minute and it was too expensive to change the destination.

Blood sample were taken from 1 male and 1 female. After the standard whole blood lympho- cyte culture in the presence of colchicine, the metaphase spreads were performed on microscopic slides and air-dried. Conventional staining, G-banding and high-resolution staining technique were applied to stain the chromosomes. The results showed that 2n (diploid) of clouded leopard was 38, and the fundamental number (NF) was 74 in the male and female. There are 6 autosome types: A type had 4 large and 2 medium submetacentric chromosomes, B type had 6 large and 2 medium acrocentric chromosomes, C type had 4 large metacentric chromosomes, D type had 8 small sub- metacentric chromosomes, E type had 8 small metacentric chromosomes and F type had 2 small te- locentric chromosomes. A pair of the short arm of chromosome E1 (chromosome pairs 14) showed a clearly observable satellite chromosomes. The X chromosome was medium submetacentric chromo- some and the Y chromosome was the smallest submetacentric chromosome.

The organisation, Panthera, initiated the project and continues to support it through a Kaplan Graduate Award to Laila Bahaa-el-din, in partnership with WildCRU and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Although Africa is recognised for its big cats, the golden cat is the only cat on the continent to depend on forest habitat. Its range is restricted to equatorial Africa (see map, right). Threats such as bushmeat hunting, forest clearing for agriculture and commercial logging have caused an estimated 44% loss of golden cat habitat to date, but so little is known about this species that it is as yet impossible to state the extent to which human activities are really affecting it. The African golden cat was previously believed to be the relative of the Asiatic golden cat but recent molecular evidence places it with the more open-habitat species, the caracal (Caracal caracal) and the serval (Caracal serval or Leptailurus serval).

David Bishop Borneo Tour 2010 Borneo 2010 I sometimes have to pinch myself to realise just how fortunate I am to return each year to this extraordinary island. VENT’s tour of Borneo is without doubt one of the finest natural history trips anywhere on our planet, not least because Borneo is one of the most exciting, vibrant and biologically diverse places on earth. The combination of immense forests replete with a fabulous array of towering trees, plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates serviced by some of the most comfortable and attractive accommodations to be enjoyed anywhere in the tropics together with some truly sumptuous meals guarantees an unforgettable experience. Whitehead’s Broadbill K. David Bishop Borneo is indisputably an extraordinary place and this continues to be underscored by new discoveries. Recent genetic studies have now shown that the Bornean Pygmy Elephant is indeed a very distinct taxon; the Borneo population of Orang Utan should be treated as a separate species and most recently studies of the Bornean Clouded Leopard show that it too is a completely separate species from all other populations. And so it is with birds, reptiles, K. David Bishop 2010 - 2 - Borneo Tour 2010 amphibians and invertebrates too. Clearly Borneo exhibits more than its share of the weird and wonderful creatures and our experiences exemplify what a wonderful tour this is. Merely listing totals of 298 species of birds and 45 species of mammals in addition to a plethora of reptiles, invertebrates and flowering plants barely does justice to what was a truly delightful experience.
