Candidate, Department of Biological Sciences, California State University Stanislaus, 1 University Circle, Turlock, CA 95382 Received 17 April, 2018; accepted 15 May 2018 Abstract Most captive animals live well past their average lifespan in the wild and this longevity increases the frequency and number of medical procedures needed to maintain their health and welfare. Most procedures require that the animal be restrained in some way, which can produce stress and trigger aggressive behavior. Positive reinforcement training can be used to lessen the stress experienced by the animal during minor medical procedures such as vaccinations, blood draws, and administering medications, and to protect the handlers and veterinary staff from physical adaptations, such as sharp teeth, claws, or quills, that could pose a potential threat. A squeeze box is often used to gently restrain small-to-medium sized animals during medical procedures, but abrupt introduction of the apparatus can result in extreme confinement-related stress and aggression. The North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is a good candidate for squeeze box restraint and this paper presents the formulation, implementation, and outcome of a shaping plan developed to introduce and acclimate a young North American porcupine at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience in Walnut Creek, California, to a squeeze box. This shaping plan divides the medical procedure of giving subcutaneous injections into small steps to which the porcupine was introduced and acclimated during three training phases completed January-April, 2018. The use of a squeeze box as a form of restraint proved to reduce stress in the porcupine and also increased the safety of the keeper and veterinary staff. Some amendments to the shaping plan were made, but all retained training goals were completed within the four-month time period of the project. This shaping plan establishes a protocol for injection training for North American porcupines using a squeeze box that can be expanded at facilities that house North American porcupines for use in other procedures and adapted for use with other small-to-medium sized, potentially dangerous animals.     24. Porcupine The porcupine is a blackish, quill-armored, slow-moving rodent with an appetite for tree bark and salt. It lives in forests and often can be seen hunched into what appears to be a black ball high in a tree. While it does not occur in all parts of Pennsylvania, the porcupine is one of Pennsylvania’s best-known and most easily identified wild animals. Its taxonomic name is Erethizon dorsatum. Coendou prehensilis, the Brazilian porcupine, is a mid-sized rodent with evolutionarily modified body hair. Like all New World porcupines, spines grow singly out of the skin and possess minute barbs at the end of the shaft. These spines cover the entire body, except for its fleshy nose, its belly and a large portion of its prehensile tail, and are usually light in colour (white to burnished yellow); there are also darker brown to black (soft/ unmodified) hairs interspersed along the body. Chapman Abstract: The perineal glands of the porcupine, Erethizon dorsatum (L., 1758), are sexually dimorphic, paired pockets sprouting osmetrichial hairs. They lie between the anus and urethra, lateral to the midline, amid a sebaceous glandular ex- panse. In their active state, the glandular pockets secrete an amber substance with a terpenoid odor. When inactive, the glands produce no stain or odor. In males, activation of the glands is associated with fully descended testes. The glandular pockets yield a microbiota (‘‘microflora’’) in both their active and inactive states. We hypothesize that the active-state mi- croflora transforms a sebaceous secretion into a pheromonally active product that is disseminated by anal dragging. The glandular microflora was characterized by gas chromatography of bacterial fatty acid methyl esters (GC-FAME) and poly- merase chain reaction – denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) of 16S ribosomal RNA gene fragments of bacteria. PCR-DGGE results showed the resulting bacteria profiles were the same in both sexes, but differed between the active and inactive states. Active-state microfloras were dominated by members of the Actinobacteria and showed greater coefficients of similarity than inactive-state microfloras. The microflora of individual animals changed with time and with secretory state. We argue for a reproductive role for the activated perineal glands. We evaluated geographic variation in New World porcupines of Coendou (Erethizontidae) from eastern Brazil by analyzing morphological data from museum specimens we identified as Coendou insidiosus and C. spinosus. Coendou insidiosus ranges from the states of Bahia to Espírito Santo, reaching the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil; C. spinosus extends from the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, extending into Paraguay, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina. Our results indicate that there are three spatially coherent, morpho- logically distinct groups, which can be diagnosed using a combination of discrete morphological characters, and which are supported by univariate and multivariate statistical analyses. The short legs are bowed, and the animal stands bear-like with its entire foot planted firmly on the ground. The claws are long and curved. On the hind feet the first digit is replaced by a broad movable pad that allows the animal to grasp branches more firmly when climbing. The muscular tail is thick, short, and rounded at the tip. The porcupine’s coat consists of a soft, brown, woolly undercoat and coarse, long guard hairs.
