ANNUAL REPORT — 2016 a GREAT LEAP FORWARD Austin Film Society 1901 East 51St Street Austin, TX 78723 512.322.0145 Austinfilm.Org to OUR STAKEHOLDERS
ANNUAL REPORT — 2016 A GREAT LEAP FORWARD Austin Film Society 1901 East 51st Street Austin, TX 78723 512.322.0145 austinfilm.org TO OUR STAKEHOLDERS The Austin Film Society has long held the dream of our own full-time cinema, a local place where people can assemble to communally explore all that international film culture has to offer. This was the year we took action on that dream and signed a long-term lease with The Linc to create the AFS Cinema. Two full-time screens will support interesting, challenging and entertaining cinematic events, lovingly curated by our brilliant team of programmers. A kitchen, lobby bar and event hall will support community gatherings and provide extra income to supplement ticket sales. The AFS Cinema was not AFS’s only program expansion in fiscal 2016. We also opened Austin Public, a 7,000-square-foot television studio in East Austin open to anyone in Austin who wants to explore filmmaking. By virtue of a contract with the City of Austin, AFS is able to offer classes, studio space and equipment at an incredibly low barrier to entry, and distribute locally made work on our channels and website. Additionally, we are making progress on plans for building out the former National Guard Armory into a creative media hub with the help of the 2012 bonds. Our facilities team expects to have schematic designs to show in 2017 as well as a plan for obtaining the $3.5 million-plus needed to create a fully functioning building. Meanwhile at AFS, it’s business as usual, with our instructors delivering youth media programs at under-resourced schools in Austin and our programmers planning screenings at various beloved Austin theaters while the AFS Cinema is dark for renovations (November 2016 –Spring 2017). -

Edited Production Notes
Richard Linklater as a Filmmaker Edited production notes Richard Linklater – The director and the film RICHARD LINKLATER (Director/Producer) was born in Houston, Texas, and attended Sam Houston State University, before leaving to work on offshore oilrigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Moving to Austin, he founded the Austin Film Society in 1985, to showcase films from around the world that were not typically shown in the city. He began work on his debut film as writer/director, 1988s ‘It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books’ and, three years later, he wrote, produced and directed ‘Slacker’, which became an indie sensation in the early 1990s. Despite its minuscule budget, the movie became the subject of considerable mainstream media attention, with the term ‘slacker’ becoming a much-overused catchall epithet for America's disaffected youth. In 1993, he wrote and directed Dazed and Confused, another influential and popular coming-of-age comedy. Next, Linklater made Before Sunrise, a romance set in Vienna, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Nine years later, he, Hawke and Delpy received Oscar® nominations for their screenplay of Before Sunset which continued the lovers’ story in Paris. His eclectic canon continued with SubUrbia, based on the Eric Bogosian play; The Newton Boys, a 1920s-set historical crime drama; Waking Life, an animated feature based on live-action; Tape, based on Stephen Belber’s three-character one-act play; the short film Live From Shiva’s Dance Floor, featuring ‘Speed’ Levitch; the international comedy hit School of Rock, starring Jack Black; $5.15/Hr., an ensemble comedy about restaurant workers; Bad News Bears, a remake of the hit baseball comedy; Fast Food Nation, a searching dramatic examination of the burger business; Philip K. -

Abstract JONATHAN DEMME: CHAMPION OF THE SOUL Louis Black, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2019 Supervisor: Tom Schatz This study offers chronologically organized essays that examine the individual films within the context of Jonathan Demme’s authorship. This is not going to be an argument for Demme as an auteur as a biographical or qualitative statement. At best, he does not fit easily into the categorized definitions of auteur. Instead, looking at his body of work and treating it as a whole, despite its inconsistencies, eccentricities, and insistent uniqueness, is absolutely the best way to understand and appreciate the entirety of his work. Rather than using the films to define the filmmaker, it is through the sensibility of the films that they best resonate and make the most meaning. Each film was created on its own terms, carefully crafted to be organic to the purpose, ambition, and intention of the project. Therefore, most of his productions are notably different from one another. -
