10 COMMENCEMENT 2021 Preparing future leaders We prepare future architects, urban planners and developers as nimble collaborators, skilled makers and enterprising problem solvers. Drawing upon deep-rooted traditions in hands-on, activist teaching and research, we ground our work in the communities we serve, where our ideas take shape as built works and realized plans.

In service to communities The School’s place-based engagements run wide and deep, stretching across decades and around the world, from the cloud forests of Costa Rica to rural villages in India to the historic streets of Madrid. The center of our community-based approach is Bufalo, a resurgent post- industrial city whose dynamic urban landscapes, neighborhoods and people have situated and inspired our work for more than 50 years.

Top-ranked in research Our faculty are internationally recognized scholars and practitioners in globally critical felds including climate resilient design, inclusive design, food systems planning, sustainable materials and building, economic development planning, and afordable housing. COMMENCEMENT 2021 11 Dean’s Message

Congratulations graduates and members of the School of Architecture and Planning’s Class of 2021. Today we come together in celebration of all you have accomplished during one of most difcult times in U.S. history. As you consider the tumult in today’s world, I urge you to embrace the same optimism and problem- solving agility that got you here today. The current moment is one of possibility for radical, and hopeful, change – a space of agency and action for the world-making professions of architecture, urban planning, environmental design and real estate development. Over the course of your studies – and well before the pandemic – you navigated life-shaping challenges, emerging as skilled makers and doers, adept collaborators, and activist-oriented scholars and practitioners. The events of the past year changed us in profound ways – the way we interact, the way we conceive and move through space, the questions we ask, the partners we engage, and the practices we pursue. Through it all, you turned challenge into opportunity through grit, inspiration and sharpened resolve to make the world better. As graduates in an historic time, you bear great responsibilities. The world needs community-minded change agents like you. Your job now is to listen, advocate, and act with renewed urgency on the problems of the day, from a warming planet, to shortages in afordable housing, to place-based health inequities. With your perspective, skills and ambition, we can push our disciplines into new spheres of infuence to build more vibrant, resilient and equitable communities for all.

Today we look forward to your future with great promise. As graduates, you join nearly 6,000 alumni leading the way as advocates for new ways of thinking, making, building – and living. Thank you, as our next class of alumni, for your service ahead, and congratulations on your commencement. Class of 2021, here’s to all you have accomplished, and all that’s to come. All the best,

Robert G. Shibley, FAIA, FAICP Professor and Dean School of Architecture and Planning
