The Deanery of Richmond have taken part in Thy Kingdom Come for the last four years by prayer walking throughout the deanery. This year as we live with COVID-19 we are unable to prayer walk the deanery. We have prepared a virtual prayer walk and hope you will once again journey through each of the benefices as we pray for all who live and work in the deanery. On page three of the booklet there is a list of the prayer walks we would like you to join with as we pray daily for each benefice. 1 We have taken photographs from the last four years of Thy Kingdom Come prayer walks and grouped them together to enable us to see a glimpse of each area. As we cannot hold our Deanery Ascension Day service at Easby Abbey We are invited to an online Deanery Service Hosted by our Area Dean Rev Martin Fletcher. You will find the invitation on the page 4 The Kingdom Come has many resources for all ages to use which are available for us on page 3 We do hope you will join us as we pray for God’s Kingdom to come among us. 2 Ways your family and church can be involved in this year’s Thy Kingdom Come Here are five, easy, accessible ways for your church to do TKC this year: Prayer and Care It has been heartening to see how people have shown love and kindness, serving and loving the most vulnerable, during this unprecedented time. As a result, we are introducing a new strand to this year’s Thy Kingdom Come. As we pray for those we know and love to become followers of Jesus, how could we demonstrate this also in deed (in keeping with social distancing guidelines in respective countries?) Many churches are already taking the lead on this. Please go here for more information. 24/7 Prayer / Continuous Prayer Why not consider hosting a continuous virtual prayer event? It could be held for 24/1, 24/7 or 240 hours of prayer 24/10! You may wish to connect with other churches locally from different denominations or even connect with churches in different parts of the world. For example, if you are a church based in the UK, could you team up with a church based in Australia and take it in turns to do continuous prayer – 12-hour shift patterns? Have a look at our continuous prayer page here to enable and help you to plan this event. Pray Together at regular times Praying for people to come to know the love, hope and peace found in Christ is at the heart of Thy Kingdom Come. Could your church set up regular, daily patterns of prayer (via conference call or Zoom / Skype) to hold these people in prayer or adapt existing morning and evening prayer times to do so? Or quite simply, you could commit to saying the Lord’s Prayer at a particular time of day. Our daily prayer resource which could help is available here. Light up the World in Prayer Jesus Christ is the light of the world and we are called to be the light of the world as we bear His image. Could you encourage as many Christians as possible in your town or village to commit to lighting up the world in prayer during these 11 days? On the Thy Kingdom Come website, there is a ‘Light up the world’ in prayer section with a whole suite of resources to equip you / your church to encourage others to pray and shine their light. One of these activities, is a map of the world which we want to see filled with light. As each individual, family and church commit to pray, more lights will populate the map. Will you play your part, as we pray for the light of Christ to penetrate the darkness across the globe? Digital resources We have a number of digital resources to equip churches to participate in Thy Kingdom Come. This includes the Prayer Journal with reflections, Bible verses and actions, particularly suitable for young people, and the Family Prayer Adventure Map - which includes additional Augmented Reality bonus features that can be accessed through a new bespoke Family Prayer Adventure app. The award-winning Thy Kingdom Come app, will also be available in May, in 6 languages. Dear friends, I would like to invite you to join a live Communion Service on Ascension Day, Thursday 21 May, at 7pm. This will be a joint service for the Richmond Deanery and it would be wonderful to have each Benefice represented! We will be using Zoom and the link is given at the foot of this message. You will be welcome to sign in at any time from 6:45. With the ‘Zoom experience’ for multiple participants working best if everyone without a speaking part mutes their microphone we will do this at the start of the service. During the service please keep your microphone on mute, even when we are saying together the words marked ‘All’ in the order of service on the next pages. Before 7pm, as you join the service, your microphone will be open to enable conversation if you wish. At the end of the service all are welcome to stay for conversation. Regrettably and self-evidently, only I will be able to receive the consecrated bread and wine. However, I will do so on behalf of us all. The rest of us will be making a ‘Spiritual Communion’, of which a summary is offered in the Introduction in the attached order of service. In essence: “if we offer ourselves in penitence and faith, giving thanks for the redemption won by Christ crucified, we may truly ‘eat and drink the Body and Blood of our Saviour Christ’, although we cannot receive the sacrament physically in ourselves”. Our liturgy provides for this and includes special prayers which acknowledge that we will be receiving the sacrament spiritually rather than physically. I look forward to seeing you at the service.
