SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS April 8, 2010 Originally published April 7, 2010 at 10:13 PM | Page modified April 7, 2010 at 11:51 PM Mariners bullpen falters in 6-5 loss to Oakland Oakland's Kurt Suzuki drilled a deep fly ball past the glove of Milton Bradley at the left-field wall in the ninth inning, handing reliever Mark Lowe and the Mariners a 6-5 walkoff loss. By Geoff Baker Seattle Times staff reporter OAKLAND, Calif. - The realities of a six-man bullpen began hitting the Mariners about as hard as their opponent was by the time the fifth inning rolled around. It was clear by then that Seattle starter Ryan Rowland-Smith would have to scratch and claw just to make it through the minimum five innings his team desperately needed Wednesday night. After that, it was Russian roulette time, as the Mariners played a guessing game with their limited relief corps, squeezing every last pitch they could out of some arms. But they couldn't get the job completely done as Kurt Suzuki drilled a deep fly ball past the glove of Milton Bradley at the left-field wall in the ninth inning, handing reliever Mark Lowe and the Mariners a 6-5 walkoff loss. After the game, manager Don Wakamatsu suggested the team would have to call up another bullpen arm if a similar long-relief scenario occurs in Thursday's series finale. "We can't keep going like this," Wakamatsu said. The second walkoff defeat in two nights for the Mariners, in front of 18,194 at the Coliseum, has them crossing their fingers that starters Doug Fister and Jason Vargas don't implode these next two days.

SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS February 21, 2011 Last updated February 20, 2011 12:35 p.m. PT Vargas, Fister expected to be part of M's rotation By TIM BOOTH AP SPORTS WRITER PEORIA, Ariz. -- For a couple of guys who've never enjoyed much job security, the start of the 2011 season is a bit different for both Jason Vargas and Doug Fister. Instead of a year ago when they were a couple of back-end pitchers expected to be part-time fill-ins of the Seattle Mariners pitching staff, Vargas and Fister enter this season almost assured of being in the Mariners rotation. "You still have to go out and throw well, but it's nice when you've got people that are counting on you to do what you've done in the past," Vargas said. Neither Vargas or Fister were statistically superior in 2010, but then again, neither were the Mariners sans AL Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez. Yet each proved a viable and valuable member of Seattle's rotation, appearing to cement their spots moving forward. Vargas set career highs in nearly every statistically category. The most important were his number of starts and innings pitched, finally proving he was fully recovered from surgery to remove a bone spur his pitching elbow in October 2007, followed by surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip in 2008 that all but ended his two- year career with the New York Mets. Vargas finished last season making 31 starts and throwing 192 2-3 innings, 101 more than he'd ever thrown in a major league season.

  • Buckaroos Better Get Off to a Nice Start Otherwise We Could Be Watching Another Season of Cellar Dwellers
Buckaroos better get off to a nice start otherwise we could be watching another season of cellar dwellers 5. Pittsburgh Pirates: Pirates left hander Oliver Perez was the big return prize for Pittsburgh in their trade a couple years ago with San Diego that sent outfielder Brain Giles to the Padres. During the off-season, a number of teams including the New York Yankees coveted Perez. But credit Pittsburgh’s front office crew for not letting him get away by declining all trade proposals for the 23-year old from Culiacan, Mexico. His numbers in 2004 on an average at best baseball team were fairly staggering. He ranked fourth in the league in K’s with 239 and was one of just six NL starters that held an ERA under 3.00. Plus, opposing batters hit just .187 off him at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park. And better defense will make him a better pitcher, too. That’s why it is so important for guys like 3B Ty Wigginton, outfielders Jason Bay and Tike Redman, and second baseman Jose Castillo catch the baseball. Bay-Watch: Pirates outfielder Jason Bay, (26HR 82RBI .908OPS) a Canadian, recorded an 8-RBI game in two different pro seasons. The only other active player to accomplish such a feat is Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra. One of the Bucs’ best overall players is shortstop Jack Wilson. Expect the 27- year-old born in Westlake Village, California to be a perennial all-star for years to come. His .308 batting average, 53 extra base hits and 157 games played were among the elite in the National League.
