MOT DU PRÉSIDENT Chers membres, Le Comité de direction de Beatles Québec s'est récemment réuni pour discuter VOLUME 16 NO 1 PRINTEMPS 2010 des projets pour l'année 2010 et faire la mise à jour d'autres dossiers en cours. BEATLES QUÉBEC MAGAZINE Voici un résumé des items à l'agenda. Rédacteur en chef Alain Lacasse Le premier point apporté par mes collègues a été de me convaincre de laisser Corrections Yves Boivin tomber le mot intérimaire après mon titre. Ce club n'a jamais été l'affaire d'une Michel Laverdière seule personne et puisque nous pouvons compter sur une solide équipe de col- Esther Mercier-Mongeau laborateurs et collaboratrices, j'ai finalement accepté. Deze cursus had als onderwerp 'the popular instrumental'. Uit onderzoek voor deze paper kwam naar voren dat de bekendste popgroep aller tijden - The Beatles - ook instrumentale songs hebben geschreven. Mijn interesse was gewekt, te meer omdat ik de Beatles voornamelijk kende van nummers zoals 'Hey Jude', 'Yesterday' en 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Deze fameuze popgroep heeft dus eveneens andersoortige nummers geschreven. In deze thesis wil ik geen 'herziene' versie maken van informatie die al tot in den treuren is uitgeplozen. Dit is echter niet eenvoudig, maar 'instrumentale nummers' is één van de onderwerpen die als onderwerp op zichzelf, nooit onderzocht is. In de hoogtij dagen van The Beatles – de jaren 1960 – zijn er maar op 3 albums instrumentals terug te vinden. De bekendste is waarschijnlijk 'Revolution 9' van de White Album (1968). Verder staat op het album Magical Mystery Tour (1967) het nummer 'Flying'.

    Fab Faux Meet the Beatles New York combo is the greatest Beatles cover band – without the wigs Not your average cover band Photo by: Josh Rothstein One day in early 1998, Jimmy Vivino, guitarist and arranger for the Max Weinberg 7, the house band on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, ran into his neighbor Will Lee, bassist for Paul Shaffer's CBS Orchestra on Late Show With David Letterman, in the elevator of their Manhattan apartment building. "We were going to our shows," Vivino says, "and Will goes, 'Hey, I'm starting a Beatles cover band.' The first thing I said was 'Why? There are plenty of Beatles tribute bands out there.'" "Then I realized he was serious," Vivino recalls. "He said, 'I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the way classical musicians start a chamber orchestra to play Mozart. I'm talking about playing the Beatles' songs and records live, as perfectly as we can.' I said, 'Without the wigs?'" Lee's reply was quick: "Sure." Seven years later, the Fab Faux -- Lee, Vivino, guitarist Frank Agnello, drummer Rich Pagano and multi-instrumentalist Jack Petruzzelli, all of whom sing lead and harmony vocals -- are the most accomplished band in the Beatles-cover business. Since debuting at New York's China Club in May 1998, the Fab Faux have mastered and played more than 160 of the 211 songs in the official canon -- according to Agnello, the Faux's resident Beatles statistician -- and most are complex hits and post-'65 LP tracks the Beatles never performed in concert.

    Apple Label Discography 100-800 series (Capitol numbering series) Apple Records was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1968. The Apple label was intended as a vehicle for the Beatles, their individual recordings and the talent they discovered. A great deal of what appeared on Apple was pretty self indulgent and experimental but they did discover a few good singers and groups. James Taylor recorded his first album on the label. Doris Troy recorded a good soul album and there are 2 albums by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The Beatlesque group Badfinger also issued several albums on the label, the best of which was “Straight Up”. Apple Records fell apart in management chaos in 1974 and 1975 and a bitter split between the Beatles over the management of the company. Once the lawyers got involved everybody was suing everybody else over the collapse. The parody of the Beatles rise and the disintegration of Apple is captured hilariously in the satire “All You Need Is Cash: the story of the Rutles”. The Apple label on side 1 is black with a picture of a green apple on it, black printing. The label on side 2 is a picture of ½ an apple. From November 1968 until early 1970 at the bottom of the label was “MFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC. A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES INC. USA”. From Early 1970 to late 1974, at the bottom of the label is “MFD. BY APPLE RECORDS” From late 1974 through 1975, there was a notation under the “MFD.

Song School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Harvard University [email protected] Abstract The songwriting duo of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the two founding mem- bers of the Beatles, composed some of the most popular and memorable songs of the last century. Despite having authored songs under the joint credit agreement of arXiv:1906.05427v1 [cs.SD] 12 Jun 2019 Lennon-McCartney, it is well-documented that most of their songs or portions of songs were primarily written by exactly one of the two. Furthermore, the authorship of some Lennon-McCartney songs is in dispute, with the recollections of authorship based on previous interviews with Lennon and McCartney in conflict. For Lennon-McCartney songs of known and unknown authorship written and recorded over the period 1962-66, we extracted musical features from each song or song portion. These features consist of the occurrence of melodic notes, chords, melodic note pairs, chord change pairs, and four-note melody contours. Despite having authored songs under the joint credit agreement of Lennon-McCartney, it is well-documented that most of their songs or portions of songs were primarily written by exactly one of the two. Furthermore, the authorship of some Lennon-McCartney songs is in dispute, with the recollections of authorship based on previous interviews with Lennon and McCartney in conflict. For Lennon-McCartney songs of known and unknown authorship written and recorded over the period 1962-66, we extracted musical features from each song or song portion. These features consist of the occurrence of melodic notes, chords, melodic note pairs, chord change pairs, and four-note melody contours. We developed a prediction model based on variable screening followed by logistic regression with elastic net regularization. Out- of-sample classification accuracy for songs with known authorship was 76%, with a c-statistic from an ROC analysis of 83.7%. We applied our model to the prediction of songs and song portions with unknown or disputed authorship.

Käsite ei sisällä ns. tribuuttibändejä, mitkä esittävät yksinomaan The Beatles -yhtyeen musiikkia sitä mahdollisimman hyvin jäljitellen, vaan sillä tarkoitetaan minkä tahansa yhtyeen tai artistin tekemää tai esittämää musiikkia, mikä tuo kuultuna jollain tavalla mieleen The Beatles -yhtyeen musiikin, oli tämä itse artistilta joko tarkoituksellista tai alitajuista. Mielleyhtymä voi olla melkein mitä tahansa laulullisesta elementistä instrumenttien yleissoundiin, sävellyksellisiin yksityiskohtiin tai vaikkapa viittaus vain yhteen yksittäiseen ääneen. Oleellisinta on kuitenkin se, että beatlesque-elementti on aina kuultu, ei nähty. Tämän tutkielman aiheena oli tutkia sitä, mitkä ovat keskeisiä yleisesti miellettyjä beatlesque-elementtejä musiikissa ja mihin niiden alkuperä perustuu.
