Both Carrie Newcomer and Jennifer Knapp are no strangers to BBPC. Carrie performed here in concert in 2016 and 2018, and Jennifer in 2011 & 2012. Each has offered personally to allow us access to their music for our worship online. Carrie has offered us access to her online video recordings and Jennifer has recorded three of her songs especially for us here at BBPC. We will be folding in these recordings into wor- ship over the weeks to come along with our own BBPC talent. We are so blessed to have such a strong musical arsenal of talent to enrich our worship experience. This week, in addition to another tune by our own John Almendinger, we will hear our first song from Jennifer Knapp. Below you can read a little bit about both Jennifer and Car- rie. JENNIFER KNAPP is a Grammy-nominated sing- er-songwriter, author, speaker, and advocate. Her impressive history includes selling over one million albums with her first three releases Kansas (debut 1998, Gold-certified), Lay It Down (2000), and The Way I Am(2001). She has earned four Dove Awards and has two Grammy nominations. The Kansas-born musician has toured the globe with artists such as Jars of Clay and was featured on the Lilith Fair Tour in 1999 and 2010. Knapp re- ceived critical acclaim for her human approach to the divine, with The Los Angeles Times calling her "a rising star" and People Magazine describing her as "an uncommonly literate songwriter." With a considerable fan base and critical and commercial success, Knapp walked away from music in 2002 at the height of her career. After a seven-year hiatus she returned in 2010 with a renewed passion for music showcased in her album Letting Go, which debuted at No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart. Set Me Free followed in 2014 on Righteous Babe Records in conjunction with a mem- oir, Facing the Music: My Story, published by Simon & Schuster. Her 2017 album Love Comes Back Around, produced by Viktor Krauss, pairs her fearless songwriting and strong, expressive voice with Americana style rootsy arrangements. As the first major artist in the Christian music world to speak openly about LGBTQ identity, her unique position created opportunities for a national dialogue, including appearances on Larry King Live and the TEDx stage. In 2012 Knapp founded the non- profit organization Inside Out Faith, through which she continues to speak and per- form nationally as an advocate for LGBTQ & faith issues. A true Renaissance woman, Knapp recently completed a master’s degree in Theological Studies at Vanderbilt Di- vinity School. SPECIAL MUSICAL GUESTS CONTINUED ON THE NEXT PAGE 2 SPECIAL MUSICAL GUESTS in WORSHIP : CONTINUED CARRIE NEWCOMER is a performer, recording artist, and educator, de- scribed as a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe and one who “asks all the right questions” by Rolling Stone. Recent media appearances include PBS’s Religion and Ethics and Krista Tippett’s On Being. In the fall of 2009 and 2011 Newcomer was a cultural ambassador to India, in- vited by the American Embassy of India, resulting in her interfaith collaborative bene- fit album Everything is Everywhere with world master of the Indian Sarod, Amjad Ali Khan and his sons Ayan and Amaan. In 2012 and 2013 Carrie traveled to Kenya and the Middle East performing in schools, spiritual communities and AIDS hospitals. Car- rie has 17 nationally released albums on Available Light and Rounder Records, includ- ing The Point of Arrival, The Beautiful Not Yet, A Permeable Life, and Everything is Everywhere. Newcomer has also released two companion books of poetry and essays, A Permeable Life: Poems and Essays and The Beautiful Not Yet: Poems, Essays, & Lyrics. Newcomer’s first theatrical production, Betty’s Diner: The Musical, was per- formed at a sold out run at Purdue University in 2015 and is now available to interest- ed theaters, universities, and spiritual communities. In 2016 Carrie presented the Goshen College commencement address and was awarded an honorary degree in Music for Social Change. She regularly works with Parker J. Palmer in live programs, including Healing the Heart of Democracy: A Gath- ering of Spirits for the Common Good and What We Need is Here: Hope, Hard Times, and Human Possibility. Newcomer and Palmer also are actively collaborating on The Growing Edge, a website, podcast, and retreat. Spirituality and Health Magazine named The Growing Edge collaboration as one of the top ten spiritual leaders and pro- grams for the next 20 years. Three of Newcomer’s songs are included in Palmer’s newest book. Other special collaborations include presentations with neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor, author Rabbi Sandy Sasso, and environmental author Scott Russell Sanders. All of these essential workers have risked contracting COVID 19 on our behalf and we would like to say, “thank you!” Please consider contributing a video or photo “thank you” message to an individual or a group of workers who have gone above and beyond during this pan- demic. We will be gathering these messages and creating our own “BBPC Says Thank You” video to share with our local community.

The diner has become something of an institution in a small college town in Southern Indiana near Indianapolis. The regulars and refugees of Betty’s Diner are a humorous and somewhat gritty collection of regular customers that create the fabric of a deep community. At the top of the play, the diner has fallen on hard times. A new expressway has opened on the edge of town. Betty’s Diner, as are many local and family businesses, is struggling to find its place and even chances of survival in a world that seems to be moving faster everyday. Miranda, the owner, works most of the shifts herself, barely able to make ends meet. In the wee hours of the first day of spring, a mysterious stranger, Gabriel, appears. He’s handsome, albeit a little worn around the edges (1.

Much to our surprise (and pleasure), we seem to be garnering all kinds of national and international recognition in the form of Top 10 lists and musical and tourism awards for simply doing the things that we love to do. Our success rests in not being comfortable with what we did yesterday, but what we might be today and tomorrow. The 2010 event was spectacular again in the ways we have always expected: Five days of beautiful weather; a wonderful harmony between our audience, 2,500 volunteers, and artists; a wonderful musical experience and the ongoing joys of discovery offered up yet again by Chris Frayer, our Artistic Director guru; another record-breaking crowd that pushed us almost to site capacity; and another really successful year financially.
