May 4, 2009 Issue 139 CC Goes PC: Premium Choice A new era of radio began over the weekend as Clear Channel launched its Premium Choice programming initiative. The company first made its plans known in an April 15 press release that promised to “improve quality in all dayparts” by offerings PDs a choice of programming and on-air talent. Details beyond that press release are difficult to come by, especially following last Friday’s company-wide email that said, “The Premium Choice program is not something we are talking openly about in the industry or in the public or in the press…. CC Goes PC (continued from page 1) The bad news is, the music is almost identical on CC stations from coast to coast. There are some variations, which seem to occur when local stations drop in songs for timing purposes due to commercial load differences. The good news is PC seems to have a much larger playlist than most CC Country stations and they’re playing more currents per hour. (That may vary since a “Light Current” slot located near the end of the hour may get bumped by stations with a large spot load.) PC programming appears to be running five currents an hour with two recurrents. The currents showing up on multiple station playlists included songs that were between Nos. 25-35 on the Country Aircheck/Mediabase Top 50. There are two stop-sets an hour, falling roughly in the :16-:22 area and the :46-:52 area on the clock, depending on the station. There are about eight opportunities an hour to drop in a stations call letters. Calls also run between records and the promos into the stop-sets, and with jingles coming out of the stops.
