Respectively submitted, Peter West Executive Secretary STORIES FROM THE AMERICAN LAFRANCE PLANT IN ELMIRA, NY As told on facebook by Erwin Dale Brown LITTLE KNOWN FACT! President Henry Keiser Had A 62" waist. I was asked to make him a belt out of the 2" rolls of leather we used to line the ladder locks because his own belt snapped .. under some kind of stressful situation. The broken belt was brought to the upholstery shop for me to copy it in our leather. Buckle to the first punched hole in the belt? 62 inches.

WE WERE SCREWED .....WITH SCREWS!!!!! The purchasing dept. screwed ALFCO over every year without fail. Throughout the plant we had a very exact hardware need that never changed. For decades we only needed this screw, this long and this bolt, this long to build all the fire trucks at ALFCO but the purchasing dept. (to get a personal kick back into their personal INDUSTRY SUPPORTING COMMUNITY bank account) would go to a hardware company and purchase a thousand pounds of each and every screw, nut, bolt, cotter pin and I'm not sure if you understand how the first trucks were built so brass fitting that the vender made. Why couldn't ALFCO afford to I will relate what I was told by the guys in the shop that were improve and expand their operation? These are the real reasons. In there back before electric drills and air grinders were used. It is the end in Elmira after the flood in 1972 and again when the plant simple really. The parts needed to build a truck were not all made closed in Southport, row after row of 55 gallon steel drums were at the place where the trucks were built back when there was just filled with all this hardware and brass fittings and taken to a scrap the one American LaFrance. They had Procurement people and yard. I saw the barrels being filled and I saw the flat beds drive quality control people who went out and found people in their away to be scrapped. homes who could make parts for the fire truck company. Elmira was full of home industries that had horse carriage barns on their properties used as small foundries, blacksmith shops, sheet metal shops, upholstery, saddle and harness shops and so on. Many of these small businesses made enough money off the ALFCO work to open the big businesses that made the city of Elmira a huge economical force in the region. Elmira had 2 or three massive rail yards, a place where the Erie Canal boats on the Chemung Canal met the rail road yard to off load the Finger Lakes farm produce to go south to Washington DC and the big cities of Pennsylvania. The ALFCO procurement guys found people to make all the parts. Some of the parts were made in a number of different local shops so the quality control guys made sure that all the parts of one kind were made the same and worked the same. In the beginning things being made differently was a major problem. I have worked on vintage units that had three kinds of differently made hand rail mounting brackets on them that all fit RED QUARTERS the same measured dimensions. It's just that simple. As ALFCO grew the craftsmen in Elmira added to their little shops until they finally needed bigger places to work and that in turn generated American LaFrance was famous for red lacquer quarters (25 more clients for them so they hired more people and the more cent pieces). For many years, the paint department painted people they hired the better the quality was for the ALFCO parts thousands of quarters on both sides and baked them dry . Every they were making for the fire truck builder. Later on, after these Canteen company machine at ALFCO was stuffed full of red local businesses grew to be powers in the local government they quarters. Everyone in Elmira knew what they had and where it enacted new laws that restricted any new development of cottage came from if they got a red quarter in their pocket change. We participated once again in North Kansas City’s Snake Saturday Parade. It was a little rainy, but the trucks looked good. In addition to the 1960 Seagrave and the 1970 Seagrave, Rick Webb’s 1928 American LaFrance was there as well as Jim Murray’s 1974 Ford. Afterward, the trucks headed to Independence for their St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

President Pete Webb Shared a way that their Chapter works to recruit new members: While at the SPAAMFAA Winter Meeting in Houston, we had a discussion about how to attract new members. Some chapters struggle with declining enrollment, but that doesn’t seem to be our case. We described how we often stopped to leave MHH&L materials with the owners of pumpers we find parked, and how CROWN’S FIRST FIRECOACH WITH A SQUIRT DEVICE our presence on Facebook has given us leads. The “F-number” was the only Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for all Crown Fire coaches until January 1 of 1981, when the state of California began requiring the issuance of the long VIN as used on other trucks and autos, which is a combination of at least 17 different letters and numbers. Separate long VINs appeared on less than 30 Fire coaches total and only on “wide body” style Crowns delivered from 1981 to the end of production. On those Crowns, the long VIN appears on the builder’s plate (mounted inside the cab by the accelerator pedal) instead of the “F-number”. At the August 12th national Muster here in Syracuse, the verbal comments about this column flew thick and fast, and I was very pleased at the response. I wish I could remember all the questions I was asked; they were flying as fast as some of the old pumpers at the meet were getting water. One thing is for sure. There are an awful lot of unanswered. questions out there that we'd be willing to try and find the answers for, but that can’t happen unless you write 'em in. No doubt there's a mechanical or restoration problem or two on your mind, and if you’ll share it with us, we’d be very glad to help.

One of the questions that came up frequently was, it is normal for a carburetor to drip gasoline? Of course not -- but then how come so many do? First off, most old apparatus used the gravity feed system, and they will leak unless everything is absolutely tight. If the float level in the carburetor is too high, the gas will leak out through the main jets or between halves of the casting. If the float has a hole in it, or binds in some way, then the needle valve will not seat properly, and there's another source of annoying drips. If the needle valve itself is worn or grooved gas will seep past it, If all of these things are okay, the carburetor may still drip if a gasket is missing, a drain plug does not seal, or there is dirt under the needle valves A good, workable shutoff at the gas tank is your best insurance against losing your fuel and creating a fire hazard. And, speaking of fire, every piece of apparatus should have a good, serviceable fire extinguisher mounted where it can be reached in a hurry. I don’t know which would be worse -- losing your apparatus because it caught fire, or having to explain how a fire engine, of all things, burned up!

Switching from gas to Oil, for the moment, how many of you use 600W steam cylinder oil in your transmissions and differentials? It has been mentioned to me that this is really a poor lubricant for the job, even though the old specification books called for the use of this stuff when the rigs were new. Back then, it was the best thing available, but technicological advances since have resulted in many better-suited products. The old 600W was designed to be used just once., then discarded. Because its viscosity is not flexible, under cold weather conditions the stuff is so stiff it doesn’t lubricate at all for awhile -- and that’s dangerous. A good grade of heavy gear oil (240 I think) is still available, although you may have to order it. If this isn't heavy enough for you, thicken it with a few cans of STP. And here's a warning: If there is any bronze in your rig’s rear end, such as the worm-drive wheel, do not use any lubricant which contains sulfur as this attacks bronze. Here is a caution for Ahrens-Fox piston pump owners. Check the studs that hold the pump housing together. Several of mine were rusted through completely, and would have blown out if pressure were applied. The studs that go up into the suction chamber seem to have been most affected by this corrosion.

Capt. Mike Morris, Tampa, Fla., writes to tell us how he cleaned the copper gas tank on his Seagrave, He took the tank to a radiator shop that had an acid vat, and they submerged the tank for a week. He said it was very heavily encrusted with scale and corrosion, but after a week in the acid, it came out "just beautiful." He didn't say what kind of acid was used though. To keep the tank in its like-new condition, he used white un-leaded gas at all times. And more on cleaning copper gas tanks: Alden Ludlow, Camden N.J., suggests that an Oakite Products, Inc. product called “Penetrant” can be mixed with water to equal half the tank volume and left in the tank for 24 hours. The tank is then flushed with water and allowed to dry thoroughly. If sludge is all over the inside of the tank and not just on the bottom, more solution would be needed. Check with your local Oakite Products representative for his advice. SPAAMFAA C/O CANDY BENNETT 8035 Bird Pond Road Adams Run, SC 29426
