It lies at an altitude of between 380–420 metres in the valley of the West Dart River near Two Bridges. Wistman's Wood is a rare example of the ancient high‐level woodlands of Dartmoor. Its name probably derives from Wisht‐man's wood, the vernacular word wisht meaning pixie‐led or haunted. The wood consists mainly of stunted pedunculate oak trees that grow from between moss‐covered boulders and are festooned with epiphytic mosses, lichens and ferns. Note that weather conditions on Dartmoor can be unpredictable and can rapidly change. Please ensure that you are fit and come equipped with good warm and waterproof outdoor clothing and good walking boots. The walk is about 4 miles altogether and will take about 2 hours. After the walk there will be a tasty cream tea at the Two Bridges Hotel. The house, designed in 1770 by Sir Robert Taylor, overlooks the fields and wooded slopes above the River Dart, two miles downstream of the ancient market town of Totnes. They aim to produce world class wine and cheese in harmony with the environment and the natural beauty of the Estate. The visit will consist of a guided tour of both the vineyard and winery, together with a tasting of our wines and cheese, (styles as available). A full explanation of the process from vine to wine is also given. UPDATED PROGRAMME AND DELEGATE INFORMATION April 2011 South West Annual Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Scientific Meeting, 13 & 14 May 2011 issue v5 The trails through the vineyard take approximately 30mins to walk and involve some stiles and inclines. All visitors wishing to walk through the vineyard will need good mobility plus suitable footwear and clothing. Follow link: http://www.sharpham.com/ THE ROYAL CITADEL The Royal Citadel was the most important English defence for over 100 years with its 70 foot high walls. It was built in 1665 to the design of Sir Bernard de Gomme over the earlier Plymouth Fort as a defence against a threatened Dutch invasion. It has been regularly strengthened over the years, particularly during the 1750's when it was equipped with 113 guns, and is still in use today by the military. Guided tours March ‐ September. It is at the eastern end of Plymouth Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound. On its south east corner it incorporates Fisher's Nose Blockhouse dating from 1490‐1540. On the opposite bank to Fisher's Nose was Queen Anne's Battery dating from 1667. By the end of the 17th century the emphasis on defence changed due to developments in armaments from a central defensive unit to new forts and gun batteries in a ring around the Dockyard and the approaches to it.
