The Lost Laugh
#12 1 April 2020 Welcome to issue 12 of THE LOST LAUGH. I hope, wherever this reaches you, that you’re coping OK with these troubled times, and keeping safe and well. These old, funny films are a great form of escapism and light relief at times like these. In fact, I was thinking the other day that the times they were made in had their fair share of troubles : two world wars, the 1918 flu pandemic, the Wall Street Crash and the great depression, to name a few. Yet, these comics made people smile, often even making fun out of the anxi- eties of the day. That they can still make us smile through our own troubles, worlds away from their own, is testament to how special they are. I hope reading this issue helps you forget the outside world for a while and perhaps gives you some new ideas for films to seek out to pass some time in lockdown. Thanks to our contributors this issue: David Glass, David Wyatt and Ben Model; if you haven't seen them yet, Ben’s online silent comedy events are a terrific idea that help to keep the essence of live silent cinema alive. Ben has very kindly taken time to answer some questions about the shows. Schmude, Ph.D. Senior Scientist April 28, 2011 INTRODUCTION The Sauk River Watershed District (District) entered into a Joint Powers Agreement under which the District would provide physical assessments, chemical monitoring, and aquatic macroinvertebrate assessment of aquatic habitats for the State of Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). The project is known as the Upper Sauk River Water Quality Assessment Project. The District worked in cooperation with the Lake Superior Research Institute (LSRI) at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 2008 and 2009 to provide professional training to its staff in the collection of samples of aquatic macroinvertebrates, and to use these organisms to evaluate the water quality of the upper portion of the Sauk River (Schmude 2010). In the fall of 2010, the Sauk River Watershed District conducted a similar assessment for the middle reach of the Sauk River. The current report provides an evaluation of the water quality of the middle portion of the Sauk River for 2010 based on the aquatic macroinvertebrates. METHODS District personnel sampled six sites along the middle portion of the Sauk River in Stearns County on October 13, 2010. More sites would have been sampled, but high water in this section of the river prevented access to additional sites. The sites listed below are arranged in order from the most upstream site to the most downstream site. -

Knockabout and Slapstick: Violence and Laughter in Nineteenth-Century Popular Theatre and Early Film by Paul Michael Walter Babiak A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies University of Toronto ©Copyright by Paul Michael Walter Babiak, 2015 Knockabout and Slapstick: Violence and Laughter in Nineteenth-Century Popular Theatre and Early Film Paul Michael Walter Babiak Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This thesis examines laughter that attends violent physical comedy: the knockabout acts of the nineteenth-century variety theatres, and their putative descendants, the slapstick films of the early twentieth-century cinema. It attempts a comparative functional analysis of knockabout acts and their counterparts in slapstick film. In Chapter 1 of this thesis I outline the obstacles to this inquiry and the means I took to overcome them; in Chapter 2, I distinguish the periods when knockabout and slapstick each formed the dominant paradigm for physical comedy, and give an overview of the critical changes in the social context that separate them. In Chapter 3, I trace the gradual development of comedy films throughout the early cinema period, from the “comics” of 1900 to 1907, through the “rough house” films of the transitional era, to the emergence of the new genre in 1911-1914. ii Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 present my comparative analyses of the workings of four representative
