Last year’s event celebrated a milestone of fifty years and I hope that this conference marks an auspicious beginning for the next fifty. We’ve worked hard to ensure that it will. The theme is Collaborative Exchanges: Photography in Dialogue. The key word in the title is “dialogue,” and we hope the programming will celebrate artistic practices that employ the photographic image while embracing relationships. This could be a social component, working directly with other artists or writers, creating dialogue with communities, forming collectives or shared resource banks, building public artworks, or otherwise working in expanded practice with others to make new art.

    THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

ALVAREZ/Daily News OUTSIDE THORA Jacobson's office window, construction is all around. New homes are being built due north, on Bainbridge Street, and a condo tower is rising on Broad. Cranes hover in the distance, closer to the ever-growing city skyline. "They always say we are on the verge, the next great city," Jacobson scoffed. Rather than wait for the accolades and adulation to come to the city, Jacobson, the chief operating officer of Philagrafika, the region's foremost promoter of printmakers, is bringing the international stage here. In 2010, Philagrafika will sponsor a worldwide print competition expected to draw an estimated 300,000 people to the city over a four-month period. "All Philadelphia needs is a more-open perspective on the world," Jacobson said. "We are getting there." For her work with the competition, as well as for her lifelong commitment to promoting the arts, Jacobson will be honored on Thursday with Moore College of Art & Design's Visionary Woman Award, along with photographer Mary Ellen Mark and art historian Linda Nochlin. Jacobson, 57, a Ridley Park native who lives in South Philadelphia, said that she is flattered but uncomfortable with being labeled a visionary. "I tend to think of visionaries as those who create panoramic images in their heads and then go about realizing them," Jacobson said. "My 'vision' is on a different scale — seeing connections and possibilities between and among artists, institutions and their constituencies." Before arriving at Philagrafika in February, Jacobson directed the Samuel Fleisher Art Memorial, at 8th and Catharine streets, for 23 years.

Photographer Zoe Strauss will be the focus of a mid-career retrospective at the International Center of Photography from October 4, 2013 to January 19, 2014. Including more than 100 color images, Zoe Strauss: 10 Years is an unflinching view into the economic, social, and personal complexities of life in Strauss’ own Philadelphia neighborhood and other areas of the United States. In Strauss’ words, it is “an epic narrative about the beauty and struggle of everyday life.” Inspired by American documentary photographers such as Walker Evans, William Eggleston, and Nan Goldin, Strauss’ work focuses on the fascinating and often disconcerting realities of everyday life. The majority of her work—portraits, urban landscapes, and documentation of signage—were taken in and around Philadelphia. Strauss has also traveled widely throughout the U.S., including Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi, where she photographed the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Between 2001 and 2010, Strauss displayed her photographs once a year in an unused public space beneath the I-95 highway overpass in South Philadelphia. In these annual one-day exhibitions, she mounted her photographs to the concrete bridge supports and viewers could buy photocopies of the prints for five dollars. Zoe Strauss: 10 Years is a critical assessment of this decade-long project.

    1 (Philadelphia Skyline Photo: Nolan Borgman) Public Art and the Identities of Philadelphia and Los Angeles Nolan Borgman Urban and Environmental Policy 2012 Professors Matsuoka and Shamasunder (Los Angeles Skyline Photo: CRA/LA) 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This paper looks at the relationship between public art and public policy in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Public policy, as a means of regulating the built environment of cities, has a process of implementation that is very different from the process through which art is created. This paper juxtaposes these two cities approaches to public art and public art policy. Through interviews, participant observation, and by being a stakeholder, I curate a dialectic on how public art can enhance the ideals of democracy, community, civic participation, and place-based identity. I lay out three theses, which I explore in a literature review, case studies on Philadelphia and Los Angeles, a synthesis of my case studies, and ultimately apply in 5 policy recommendations.
