A VERY "KID" HOWARD SUMMARY Reel I--refcyped December 22, 1958 Interviewer: William Russell Also present: Howard's mother, Howard's daughter, parakeets Howard was born April 22, 1908, on Bourbon Street, now renamed Pauger Street. His motTier, Mary Eliza Howard, named him Avery, after his father w'ho di^d in 1944* She sang in church choir/ but not professionally. She says Kid used to beat drum on a box with sticks, when he was about twelve years old. When he was sixteen/ he was a drummer. They lived at 922 St. Philip Street When Kid was young. He has lived around tliere all of his life . Kid's father didn't play a regular instrument, but he used to play on^ a comb, "make-like a. trombone," and he used to dance. Howard's parents went to dances and Tiis mother remembers hearing Sam Morgan's band when she was young, and Manuel Perez and [John] Robichaux . The earliest band Kid remembers is Sam Morgan's. After Sam died, he joined the Morgan band/ witli Isaiah Morgan. He played second trumpet. Then he had his own band » The first instrument he.started on was drums . Before his first marriage, when he got his first drums/ he didn't know how to put them up. He had boughtfhem at Werlein's. Keyes, Chair The black brass band parade known as the second line has been a staple of New Orleans culture for nearly 150 years. Through more than a century of social, political and demographic upheaval, the second line has persisted as an institution in the city’s black community, with its swinging march beats and emphasis on collective improvisation eventually giving rise to jazz, funk, and a multitude of other popular genres both locally and around the world. More than any other local custom, the second line served as a crucible in which the participatory, syncretic character of black music in New Orleans took shape. While the beat of the second line reverberates far beyond the city limits today, the neighborhoods that provide the parade’s sustenance face grave challenges to their existence. Ten years after Hurricane Katrina tore up the economic and cultural fabric of New Orleans, these largely poor communities are plagued on one side by underfunded schools and internecine violence, and on the other by the rising tide of post-disaster gentrification and the redlining-in- disguise of neoliberal urban policy. -

PRESTON JACKSON Also present: William Russell I [of 2]-Digest-Retyped June 2, 1958 Preston Jackson was born in the Carrollton section of New Orleans on January 3, 1904 at Cherokee and Ann [now Garfield] Istreets] (according to his mother). He went to "pay" school, then to Thorny Lafon [elementary] School, then to New Orleans University (WR says Bunk Johnson went there years before), which was at Valmont and St. Charles. His family are Methodist and Catholic. PJ moved to the Garden District; he attended McDonogh 25 School, on [South] Rampart Street; then he went back to New Orleans University [High s ]t School Division?] . In about 1920 or 1921, PJ told Joe Oliver he was thinking of taking up trombone; Oliver advised him to take clarinet instead, as PJ was a good whistler and should have an instrument more maneuver- able than the tromboneo Having decided on clarinet, PJ was surprised by his mother, wlio secretly bought him a trombone (August, 1920 or 1921) - PJ found but later that William Robertson, his first teacher, and a trombonist, had bought the horn for PJ's mother (Robertson was from Chicago) . PJ studied with Robertson for about six months; when he had had the horn for about nine months, he was good enough to be invited to play in the band at [Quinn's?] Chapel, where he remained four or five months, playing in the church band. By ROBERT BRIDGES [email protected] The man who shot an apparent intrud- er to death and wounded another in his home Thursday is himself a convicted felon who may face charges for unlawful possession of a firearm, according to sheriff’s officials. Edgar Nathan Simmons, 25, Lake City, remains on probation for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer Johnnie Collins and drug charges from 2008, records from the state department of cor- rections show. Under Florida law, convicted felons are not permitted to possess firearms. However, no decision has been made Travis Brown concerning possible charges against Simmons, according to Sgt. Ed Seifert of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. JASON MATTHEW WALKER/Lake City Reporter Simmons shot Johnnie Lee Collins A customer drives by a Wendy’s restaurant located at 180 SW Main Blvd. on Tuesday. Kelvin D. Brown, 26, a former employee, robbed the of Lake City, 22, and Travis Rashawn restaurant at gunpoint along with an accomplice, authorities said. Brown, 26, also of Lake City, after they gained entry to his Washington Street home at about 10:30 Thursday night, reports show. One suspect, a former employee, Collins, who had been released from prison weeks earlier following a 2009 shooting in Lake City, died at the scene. Brown was transported to Shands at removed mask and was later ID’d the University of Florida where he was to undergo multiple surgeries over the after midnight Monday. -

Alien, and Ralph Collins // Love's full name is Charles Edwin Love . The Edwin is part of his father's name. Love knew Emmett Hardy, from Alglers * Love never played with Hardy, but when they were working at different places, they used to meet on the way home sometimes and talk. They rode the ferry together almost every night. Hardy used what was called "artificial" fingering* He was very fast at fingering, a nice trumpet player, with a very good tone, on the -.' sweet side. The record "Jazz Me Blues" by Bix Belderbecke [Co 12" LP HRS 25, BrE 02203, PaE R127, R2580, UHCA 61, or what have you ?] is played. Love says the trumpet on the record'sounds like Mutt Carey. [I ! ! ! RBA] Love says Hardy worked at different places, Bourbon Street sometimes . At this time Love was working on IberviUe Street at the Elite Club. Sometimes he and Hardy would cross the river of the ferry together in the morning. Love says he knew Jelly Roll Morton, a good ragtime piano player. He worked all over the Vleux Carre, [sic ^ means "the district"] mostly on Basin Street. Love says Jelly Roll was from Monroe, Louisiana; he left here and went home to Monroe, then came baek here. [Compare Lomax, Mr. Jelly Roll. ] In 1917, he went back home again and went to Chicago. At Chicago he used to visit the Elite Cabaret, at 35th and State streets. -
