Octagon™: the Exhibition
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: Amy Schmidt, (702) 810-0685 [email protected] MCQ Fine Art Advisory and Ultimate Fighting Championship® Present Octagon™: The Exhibition Photographer Kevin Lynch captures the intensity of mixed-martial arts on film (May 12, 2008) Michele C. Quinn Fine Art Advisory and Zuffa, LLC, owner of the UFC brand, are pleased to announce the opening of Octagon: The Exhibition, a show of more than 20 chromogenic prints culled from the limited-edition Octagon book published by Zuffa, LLC, and powerHouse Books. The exhibition opens Memorial Day weekend in dual exhibition spaces; the MCQ Salon located at 620 S. 7th St. and Soho Lofts located at 900 Las Vegas Blvd. S. A photographic narrative of Ultimate Fighting Championship®, Octagon dramatically documents UFC’s mixed martial arts fighters moments before, during and after their intense matches in the Octagon™. Los Angeles-based photographer Kevin Lynch was given unprecedented access behind-the-scenes of this hugely popular sport over a four-year period in order to capture the rawness of the fighters and their fights. Lynch used a globe light in order to best emulate locker-room light—“it’s not really a flattering light,” says Lynch, “but it’s a very honest light.” While Lynch had the blessing of UFC owners Lorenzo Fertitta and Frank Fertitta III as well as President Dana White, when he was in the locker room it was clear that he was on his own. Eventually he gained the fighters’ trust and respect; still “the hard part was to get the ‘after’ pictures from some of these fighters,” adds Lynch. -

Our Daily Fight: Review Of The Book ‘[Ronda] Rousey - My Fight/Your Fight’ Abstract: This study aims to review the book ‘Rousey - my fight/your fight’, written by the mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Ronda Rousey and her sister, the journalist Maria Burns Ortiz. The book exposes the biography/autobiography of Ronda Rousey, tracing the timeline from birth to her fifth title defense of women’s bantamweight division Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) against Cat Zingano. We understood that Ronda Rousey overcame a series of difficulties towards the construction of her legacy. However, a grandiosity of the same size is not present in her book. Legalization of Cage Fighting in New York Dear State Assembly Member
January 10, 2012 Re: Legalization of cage fighting in New York Dear State Assembly Member: We are writing you to raise concerns about renewed efforts by Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), to legalize cage fighting in the State of New York. You are no doubt aware that the State of New York banned cage fighting in 1997. We urge you to continue to uphold the ban on cage fighting, given that the UFC, the largest promoter of cage fighting events in the U.S., has failed to demonstrate that it is willing to ensure its fighters behave in a socially responsible way, even as the company expressly markets its fights and fighters to children. We believe that the UFC contributes to a culture of violence against women, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Children, in particular, should not be exposed to the homophobic, misogynistic and violent language that has been permitted by the UFC. Please see the following website, UFC = Unfit For Children (www.UnfitForChildren.org), for more information. Some examples of anti-gay and anti-women statements by people associated with the UFC include the following: In videos, UFC light heavyweight Quinton “Rampage” Jackson repeatedly urged Japanese fans to repeat an anti-gay slur.1 The fans, who do not appear to understand English, repeated the anti-gay slur at Jackson’s urging. In one video, Jackson instructed a Japanese man to say, “Goodbye, I want you to piss on my face.”2 Recently, a UFC fighter taunted his opponent by threatening to act like former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, who has been charged with 52 counts of molesting boys. -

Incidents of Misogyny and Sexism in the UFC Rampage Jackson In the YouTube video, called “How To Pick Up a Gurl – Fast,” Rampage Jackson attempts to rape a woman in a parking garage. Before attacking his target, Rampage instructs viewers to use chloroform as “something to help her relax” and zip ties. The UFC fighter explains, “I like this parking lot because my cousin work for the security company so I know the cameras are gonna be out of service right now.”1 As Rampage stalks his victim, he comments, “And I hope she got low self-esteem.” The video has received over 200,000 views and remains accessible for public viewing.2 To our knowledge, the UFC has not issued an official statement, fined, or suspended Jackson for the video. In July 2008, video footage was uploaded of Rampage positioning himself behind a female Japanese reporter, placing his hand on her thigh, and dry humping her. When she moves away from him, he follows her and grabs her leg.3 The video currently has 1.4 million views. In June 2009, Rampage, in the middle of an interview, holds Cage Potato reporter Heather Nichols against him, and dry humps her for a full 37 seconds. He continues to hold her after she attempts to end the interview, and does not let her go until a man walks up to Rampage and taps him on the shoulder a few seconds after the interview ends. The video has over 9.8 million views.4 In late May 2011, when being interviewed by MMA Heat host Karyn Bryant, Rampage replied that she’s “Jamaican me horny” in response to her statement that she was Jamaican, black and white. -

Demand for the Ultimate Fighting Championship: an Econometric
Journal of Business and Economics, ISSN 2155-7950, USA June 2015, Volume 6, No. 6, pp. 1032-1056 DOI: 10.15341/jbe(2155-7950)/06.06.2015/002 © Academic Star Publishing Company, 2015 http://www.academicstar.us Demand for the Ultimate Fighting Championship: An Econometric Analysis of PPV Buy Rates Richard A. McGowan1, John F. Mahon2 (1. Boston College, MA 02467, USA; 2.University of Maine, ME 04469-5723, USA) Abstract: This study provides a framework by which the UFC can analyze the determinants of its PPV buy rates, a form of direct demand for the UFC. Accurately deriving demand is incredibly important in the UFC’s goal to maximize revenue and further grow the sport and equally as important for promoters, TV and cable networks. Given that the endogenous growth of the UFC has slowed greatly, specific event characteristics have emerged as the primary factors that govern the buy rate. Using a combination of empirical regression analysis and industry expertise, the UFC and promoters and others can more accurately estimate the buy rates of upcoming events. Key words: gaming; sports; econometric analysis JEL codes: C1, M1 In the past fifteen years, the sport of mixed martial arts has grown from no-rules, bareknuckle “human cockfighting” into a highly professional and incredibly popular mainstream sport with millions of fans around the world. Since purchasing its biggest rival in 2007, the Las Vegas-based Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been undisputedly the largest, best quality and most popular MMA promotion in the world. In 2008, Forbes wrote an article calling it the “Ultimate Cash Machine”, valuing it at $1 billion (Miller Matthew, 2008). -

The Rise and Rise of the UFC (Or Will Oversaturation Lead to Its Downfall)
(Cite as: Laws of the Game, ISSN: 2058-7244) Volume 1, Issue 1 Article 2 From rags to riches: The rise and rise of the UFC (or will oversaturation lead to its downfall). R Savage-West Abstract In 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) promoted a “no holds barred” mixed-martial arts contest designed to answer the perennial combat sports fans' question - can a wrestler beat a boxer? Considerable blood, sweat and (some) tears later, the UFC has turned into a multimedia corporate behemoth. This article will analyse the origins of the Ultimate fighting Championship and its continued struggle to gain mainstream acceptance and regulatory approval. In particular, the article will analyse how the UFC has shifted between subscription-based channels, event pay-per-view television, free-to-air shows and non-traditional media channels such as social media and user-generated content depending on how acceptable its product was deemed for the public. The article will conclude by arguing that while UFC has expanded globally and now dominates the mixed- martial arts industry, the ever-increasing demand for high-quality events taking place against a backdrop of corporate respectability, may eventually alienate its core market and lead to an ultimely demise….
