An A-Z of Why Classic American Bad Movies Were Made Introduction Like many of the films reviewed in this book, Huh? encountered a fundamental reevaluation partway through. It wasn’t as emphatic as the reevaluation Ray Dennis Steckler gave Rat Pfink a Boo Boo at the halfway mark, but it was important nonetheless. Originally this was an online review project that aimed at tearing apart the sort of classic bad movies which are frequently ranked amongst the worst of all time. I was doing my part to build a website called Cinema Head Cheese by contributing a new review every week throughout 2010 for a series I called Cinematic Hell, as an obvious balance to the Cinematic Heaven project I was also working through at the time, for which I aimed to watch and review every movie in the IMDb Top 250 list. Cinematic Hell and its choice of material seemed appropriate for the venue. I set few boundaries outside the inherent lack of quality these films have, covering a wide variety of films across multiple decades and from multiple countries. I hadn’t planned out the list of films entirely to begin with, but I knew that I wanted the end product to be a representative guide to bad pictures. For instance, while American cinema has given us many awful movies, I knew that I had to include The Crippled Masters, which is a Taiwanese martial arts movie starring a man with no arms and a man with no legs; the surreal Mexican Christmas story, Santa Claus, and the German exploitation flick called The Horrors of Spider Island, which, for some reason that still escapes me, remains the most visited review of all time at Apocalypse Later by a factor of two. I also knew that I wanted to span the decades. I had to include the 1934 Dwain Esper picture, Maniac, because it was so far ahead of its time as a movie that’s “so bad, it’s good”. I also had to include the Brucesploitation movie, Fist of Fear, Touch of Death, because it’s a definitively awful work containing so much that’s fundamentally wrong that I could easily ride through a long review. These two became my bookends in time at Cinema Head Cheese; I conjured everything else up from the years in between. That effective cut-off date of 1980 to ensure a focus on classic material was spawned from another idea: for me to stop after fifty 11 Huh? An A-Z of Why Classic American Bad Movies Were Made reviews and then follow up in 2011 with a similar project that covered the modern equivalent to these classic awful pictures. Maybe that will still happen one day, but I cringe at the thought of having to watch films like From Justin to Kelly, Gigli or Norbit.

Many of the existing practices are motivated by a Franco-centric lens, which ultimately defines transgressive art cinema as a new phenomenon. The thesis argues that a study of extreme art cinema needs to consider filmic production both within and beyond France. It also argues that it requires an historical analysis, and I contest the notion that extreme art cinema is a recent mode of Film production. The study considers extreme art cinema as inhabiting a space between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art forms, noting the slippage between the two often polarised industries. The study has a focus on the paratext, with an analysis of DVD extras including ‘making ofs’ and documentary featurettes, interviews with directors, and cover sleeves. This will be used to examine audience engagement with the artefacts, and the films’ position within the film market. Through a detailed assessment of the visual symbols used throughout the films’ narrative images, the thesis observes the manner in which they engage with the taste structures and pictorial templates of art and exploitation cinema.

    Why Call them "Cult Movies"? American Independent Filmmaking and the Counterculture in the 1960s Mark Shiel, University of Leicester, UK Preface In response to the recent increased prominence of studies of "cult movies" in academic circles, this essay aims to question the critical usefulness of that term, indeed the very notion of "cult" as a way of talking about cultural practice in general. My intention is to inject a note of caution into that current discourse in Film Studies which valorizes and celebrates "cult movies" in particular, and "cult" in general, by arguing that "cult" is a negative symptom of, rather than a positive response to, the social, cultural, and cinematic conditions in which we live today. The essay consists of two parts: firstly, a general critique of recent "cult movies" criticism; and, secondly, a specific critique of the term "cult movies" as it is sometimes applied to 1960s American independent biker movies -- particularly films by Roger Corman such as The Wild Angels (1966) and The Trip (1967), by Richard Rush such as Hell's Angels on Wheels (1967), The Savage Seven, and Psych-Out (both 1968), and, most famously, Easy Rider (1969) directed by Dennis Hopper. Of course, no-one would want to suggest that it is not acceptable to be a "fan" of movies which have attracted the label "cult". But this essay begins from a position which assumes that the business of Film Studies should be to view films of all types as profoundly and positively "political", in the sense in which Fredric Jameson uses that adjective in his argument that all culture and every cultural object is most fruitfully and meaningfully understood as an articulation of the "political unconscious" of the social and historical context in which it originates, an understanding achieved through "the unmasking of cultural artifacts as socially symbolic acts" (Jameson, 1989: 20).

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: MODERNIZATION AND VISUAL ECONOMY: FILM, PHOTOJOURNALISM, AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE IN BRAZIL AND ARGENTINA, 1955-1980 Paula Halperin, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Directed By: Professor Barbara Weinstein Department of History University of Maryland, College Park My dissertation explores the relationship among visual culture, nationalism, and modernization in Argentina and Brazil in a period of extreme political instability, marked by an alternation of weak civilian governments and dictatorships. I argue that motion pictures and photojournalism were constitutive elements of a modern public sphere that did not conform to the classic formulation advanced by Jürgen Habermas. Rather than treating the public sphere as progressively degraded by the mass media and cultural industries, I trace how, in postwar Argentina and Brazil, the increased production and circulation of mass media images contributed to active public debate and civic participation. With the progressive internationalization of entertainment markets that began in the 1950s in the modern cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires there was a dramatic growth in the number of film spectators and production, movie theaters and critics, popular magazines and academic journals that focused on film. Through close analysis of images distributed widely in international media circuits I reconstruct and analyze Brazilian and Argentine postwar visual economies from a transnational perspective to understand the constitution of the public sphere and how modernization, Latin American identity, nationhood, and socio-cultural change and conflict were represented and debated in those media. The Channels palette shows the red, green, and blue components of a color image. Each channel offers a useful black and white interpretation of the color image that you can use to adjust the color. The key concept is for you to use the color channels as black and white layers. 2 Conversion methods There are almost a dozen ways to convert an image from color to black and white; and you can probably find at least one expert to support each way as the best conversion method. The bottom line is that most conversion methods work reasonably well. The method that works best for you depends on your particular workflow and the tools that you’re comfortable with. The following method isn’t necessarily the best and it isn’t the fastest—it generates a larger file—but it offers you the most control and flexibility. Creating layers from channels offers you more control than any other conversion method.

Given the relative youth of the discipline, performance studies has remained steadfast in delimiting its objects as those that are live—shared air performance—and not bound by textuality; only recently has the discipline considered the mediated, but still solely within the circumscription of shared air performance. The cinema, as cultural object, permeates our lives—it is pervasive and ubiquitous—it sets the bar for quality acting, and shapes our expectations and ideologies. The cinema, and the cinematic text, is a complex performance whose individual components combine to produce a sum greater than the total of its parts. The cinema itself is a performance—not just the acting—participating in a cultural dialogue, continually reshaping and challenging notions of liveness, made more urgent with the ever-increasing use of digital technologies that seem to further segregate what is generally considered real performance from the final, constructed cinematic text.
