The 2018 Lortel Award-winner for Best Play, School Girls examines the universal similarities and glaring differences facing teenage girls across the globe. In this comic tale of bitter reversals, Paulina (MaameYaa Boafo ) —the reigning adolescent queen bee at Ghana’s most exclusive boarding school—has her heart set on not just competing in the Miss Universe pageant, but decisively winning it. However, the unexpected appearance of Ericka ( Joanna A. Jones ), an American transfer student with undeniable talent and beauty, captures the attention of the pageant recruiter along with Paulina’s posse of hive-minded friends. Tony Award nominee Leigh Silverman (“Well,” “Violet”) directed this 60- minute tour de force world premiere for Roundabout Theatre Company’s Roundabout Underground in 2017. Theater Close-Up: Uncle Vanya Premieres Friday, August 23 at 9 p.m. on THIRTEEN and thirteen.org/theatercloseup In its inaugural production, the Hunter Theater Project presented Anton Chekhov ’s Uncle Vanya at the Frederick Loewe Theater at Hunter College, directed by playwright Richard Nelson , and translated by Nelson and renowned Russian literature translators Richard Peyear and Larissa Volokhonsky in their first work to premiere in New York City. Vanya ( Jay O. Sanders in his 2019 Drama Desk Award-winning role) and his niece Sonya ( Yvonne Woods ) struggle to care for the estate owned by Vanya’s brother-in-law Alexánder Serebryakóv ( Jon DeVries ), a wealthy and celebrated professor. When this local legend returns with a beautiful new wife and announces his plans to sell the estate, hidden passions explode and the lives of the entire family come undone.   • STATEMENT of PRINCIPLE No One Should Be Forced to Choose
    STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLE No one should be forced to choose between her personal safety and dignity, and her job. But too often in the theater community this is exactly the choice that women must make. Sexual discrimination and harassment and gender-based violence often occur in the intimate and physical context of a theater production. Victims of such conduct face a stark choice between continuing to work in close collaboration with their abuser and quitting the show. Few can afford to give up a job and lose not only income, but also the opportunity for career advancement. There is a sense in the community that it is not necessarily in a victim’s best interest to report abuse because of fear that the response will be insufficient and open her up to retribution. In addition, many instances of abuse happen outside of the physical boundaries of a theater. No theater, union or guild currently takes responsible for handling such cases. However, the two people involved will most likely have to work together the next day or in another production, and the victims are left to deal with the aftermath by themselves. In the face of these realities, victims often choose silence and the abuse is allowed to continue. It is time for the theater community to break its own silence on harassment and abuse and formally address the problem. The reality is that those who behave abusively are generally in positions of power. Artistic directors hold the power to employ, playwrights have hiring approval; removing a director mid-rehearsal puts an entire production in doubt; losing a celebrity from the cast hurts ticket sales.

It might take a heavenly host of prophets and presidents to emancipate the hearts of those in “The Whipping Man.” Matthew Lopez’s affecting, suspenseful and at times searing play strips the skin off such lofty ideas as freedom and honor to peer at the raw nerves underneath, and lay bare the cost paid for such lofty notions. As directed with a spare intensity by Giovanna Sardelli for the Old Globe Theatre (in a West Coast premiere), the work’s sense of the visceral sometimes gets close to literal. In the very first scene, a Confederate casualty has his festering leg amputated amid the ruins of a once-grand Virginia plantation. When the soldier’s former slave, now savior, puts down the saw to sop up the blood, the sound of a soaked rag wrung into a bucket is its own grisly hymn to misery and perseverance.

  • Summer and Smoke
    Welcome It is my great pleasure to welcome Transport Group to CSC. I first saw the extraordinary work of this innovative company early in my time in New York City. Barbara Walsh, who is in the play this evening, was in my production of Company on Broadway and she very rightly encouraged me to see their work. I’m so happy that she did. I have always been struck by the aesthetic of Transport Group and by the clear and incisive simplicity of the work of their director Jack Cummings III. So, when I was considering companies with whom to parter for our 50th anniversary season, it was obviously drawn towards speaking with Transport Group. Jack’s work focuses on American writers and here we were planning the inclusion of two great American writers in our season - Terrence McNally and Tennessee Williams. Last season we included a readings series as part of our program of work. One of the plays read was Williams’ Summer and Smoke. On hearing it, I felt it would be a fitting piece to include in the present season. Possibly one of his lesser-performed plays, it premiered in 1948 - seventy years ago. Then in 1952 it was performed at Circle in the Square in New York City. That production, at the Sheridan Square Playhouse location, is credited as heralding the beginning of the Off-Broadway movement. Many productions of the play have followed, including a very recent one at the Almeida Theatre in London. So many wonderful things have come together with Summer and Smoke.

HISTORY In 2007, IRT Theater embarked on a groundbreaking journey to support emerging and established artists, to give young artists a unique opportunity to work with professionals, and to offer development and performance opportunities for Deaf artists and audiences. With new Artistic Director, Kori Rushton, the company created its artist in residency program & completely revamped its staff & business model. Today IRT Theater is focused in two primary areas. First, IRT fosters independent artists by providing space, support, and most important, time to create their work through its 3B Development Series, in which there are several residencies reserved for Deaf artists. Second, IRT mentors the next generation of theater artists through its educational program. Launched in 2012, Westside Experiment, is a teen acting laboratory that pairs students with working experimental theater artists to learn about their craft and create an original theater piece at IRT. Some of the pioneering artists who have developed work at IRT are: Young Jean Lee, Reggie Watts, Mike Daisey, Tommy Smith,terraNOVA Collective, Immediate Medium, The Nonsense Company/Rick Burkhardt, May Adrales, Katt Lissard, Thomas Bradshaw, Group Theory, Crystal Skillman, Collaboration Town, Rady&Bloom, Erica Fay and many others.
