Things To Consider Before Buying a Horse

Almost every little girl dreams of owning a horse at some point in her childhood. The reality is, however, that properly caring for a horse is a big responsibility. There is a lot to consider before buying a horse, from having the right amount of land for exercise, finding a vet that does on-site visits, which breed is best, food and medical expenses, and plenty more.

Lets review a few of these in more detail!

Breed of Horse

Perhaps one of the first things to consider (after knowing if you have enough income) is which breed of horse is best, especially for beginners. Most beginners opt for the American Quarter Horse, which is the most common breed in America. This horse is great for beginners because how versatile the horse is. However, they may be a bit too energetic for some. Another great consideration is an Arabian breed- though they are known for being hot headed and spirited, they're also quiet and very loyal. Consider the personality and temperament of the breed before making a decision. Finding the breed that fits you best is important, so consider all aspects before buying.

Care For a Horse

So, what does it take to care for a horse? Horses aren't as simple as caring for a dog or cat, and involve loads of interaction. In fact, it's recommended that horses have a friend, usually another barnyard animal, as they are immensely social creatures. Horses take a lot of care, both in materials and time. Carefully consider if you have the necessary funds, manpower and time to give to them. Consider the Seller

Vet the seller before buying a horse from them. Take a good look at their selling practices, as well as their animals. Request records of health, sale and anything else related to the horse. Make sure that the seller seems honest and that the animal seems well cared for. Bad sellers do exist, so bring along someone who knows horse sales before purchasing a horse. Make sure to consider every aspect and choose a seller wisely.

Buying a horse to own as a pet can be a life-changing decision for both you and the horse. Make sure you do your due diligence on behalf of you both and only follow through if you are 100% sure you can give them the life they deserve. If you can, then you will absolutely enjoy having a horse as a pet, they certainly bring a magic that is hard to describe.

Story Time: Saving Grace

Many people will go through anything for their pets, while others don't even know they wanted a pet until that pet wanted them. We've all read the dog stories, and we've all heard of the sad rescue dog who just wants to be loved. But I never imagined that I would have my own dog rescue story.

It's not that I didn't like dogs, I love dogs, of course. But I didn't know I needed one... that is. until that night last winter, where I was trying to finish up my hectic holiday shopping. It was cold, half of the things I needed were sold out and I was on my 4th store with at least 3 more to go. I wasn't having the best night, but it turns out, neither was Grace. I was walking out of the store when I heard a sound, a terrible sound. I wasn't even sure what it was at first, until I noticed the white pit bull barreling toward me. It wasn't any pit bull, she was small, still a puppy and she was bleeding. I didn't know what to do or how to react so I just ran toward her, crouching. She was terrified, and seemingly had just been attacked with something that was making her hip bleed pretty badly.

I didn't have much of anything on me. I did have an old blanket in my car, and strangely, a jar of peanut butter. I like eating peanut butter, don't judge me. Anyway, Grace, as I would name her, just sort of stopped. Losing blood and tired, she lied down in the snow. I asked an old woman to watch her for me, stating I was hoping to help her. With a lot of patience, peanut butter and an old blanket, I loaded Grace in my car, and took her to the vet. It was confirmed, she had been attacked, and likely would've died.

Grace is now my very best friend, and has saved me as well. Suffering from depression, I may not have been physically bleeding, but I was screaming that night too. At least until me and Grace found and saved each other.
