Mar 14, Anne rated it liked it Recommends it for: Aquafans. Shelves: fishygraphic-novelscomicsread-in Well, it's better than Batmanso at least there's that. I was hoping the newly rebirthed Aquaman would Wow me the way Johns' The Trench did, but no such luck. I mean, it's not awful or anything, but for some reason the action and characters didn't really suck me in to the story. The art didn't Wow me, either. Not ugly, just? Sorry, I can't put my finger on it, but the look of this thing was just a tad off-putting to me. I don' Well, Aquaman: Volume 1 better than Batmanso at least there's that. I don't know, it all just added up to a blech feeling when I looked at it. I appreciate it when characters who are romantically involved stick by each other, instead of falling apart at the first sign of trouble. Ok, the gist of the story is that there's this terrorist attack at the Atlantian Embassy and then on an American ship, and it all points to Arthur's people. So the America government arrests Arthur on what may be the flimsiest evidence in comic book history. Do any governments arrest the kings of other countries? I think not. That's the sort of diplomatic nightmare that would start wars. The United States is supposedly very wary of Atlantis after Orm attacked and destroyed its coastline, so they cuff its new king and stuff him in a jail cell? Um, wouldn't that kind of set the Atlanitan's off Very contrived and silly, Mr. I'm disappointed in you. The showdown with Superman at the end left me with mixed feelings. Sure, I loved seeing Arthur show off what a badass he is, but at the same time I'm disappointed that it Aquaman: Volume 1 to be against Clark. Superman shouldn't be letting our government manipulate him, you know? He should Aquaman: Volume 1 better! Add that together with Arthur's little pity party speech about how the Justice League doesn't love him, and the whole thing had a cringy feel to it. Still, I've got hope that this will get better, because its got a decent thought flawed plot, and it's readable. Coulda been worse. Recommended for fans of Aquaman. View all 9 comments. Apr 14, Sean Gibson rated it it was ok. On the one hand, the story takes itself very seriously, setting Aquaman up as a noble and righteous king torn between two worlds and struggling to do right by both; on the other, it tries to self-deprecatingly acknowledge the ridiculousness of making a righteous and noble figure of a dude who talks to fish and wears a hideous orange-and-green, skintight, scaly outfit. Chief of Staff to the Big Blue Boy Scout himself by which I mean Superman, not Papa Smurf, though rumor has it that he Aquaman: Volume 1 took Aquaman in a best two-out-of-three arm wrestling contest with, the story goes, both arms tied behind his back. Also, that thing you did, with the twisting? And when you move your hips like that, you look a little bit like a lopsided spinny toy. Aquaman: Volume 1, you have no ass. Atlantis has built a dry land embassy on the Massachusetts shore to strengthen relations with America. Time for Aquaman and Mera to hit stuff! Given how popular Rebirth has been with readers, putting perennial second-plac Atlantis has built Aquaman: Volume 1 dry land embassy on the Massachusetts shore to strengthen relations with America. So it looks like Rebirth is a return to classic Aquaman: Volume 1 while also incorporating the New 52 timeline - fair enough but no idea how that works given that the New 52 was a continuity reboot that wiped out classic canon! The story is so uninspired. Then things get dumber with the Deluge — terrorists obviously not standing for Atlantis — sinking a US ship and once again creating tension between the two nations. Mera is poorly written too. Remember DC Universe Rebirth 1? The only story point in that issue for this series was Aquaman proposing to Mera. I got nothing out of this one except for yawn after yawn. A disappointing beginning to my Rebirth odyssey and another Aquaman: Volume 1 Aquaman book to add to the pile! View all 6 comments. They are never going to let Aquaman just resolve his to kingdoms, Atlantis and the US, are they? This will forever by this archetype. Smith 1,* and Steve Mentz 2 1 School of English and Digital Humanities, University College Cork, T12 K8AF Cork, Ireland 2 Department of English, St. John’s University, New York, NY 11439, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 12 February 2020; Accepted: 20 July 2020; Published: 22 July 2020 Abstract: Hollywood films such as Pixar’s Moana (2016) and Warner Brothers’ Aquaman (2018) have drawn on the aesthetics and stories of the island cultures of Oceania to inform their narratives. In doing so, these works have both succeeded and failed to respect and engage with oceanic cultural knowledge, providing a cultural vehicle to expand communication, while also exploiting Oceanic culture for financial gain. Cultural tropes and stereotypes pose a heavy intellectual burden that neither film fully shoulders, nor are the complexities of their content acknowledged. Moana sought to enlarge the franchise of the “Disney Princess” genre, but could not avoid issues of cultural appropriation and tokenism becoming entangled with an ongoing process of engagement. Moana’s desire to represent the cultural memory of Oceania raises questions, but while Pixar presents digital fantasy, Aquaman hides its global ambitions beneath star Jason Momoa’s broad shoulders. If the blue humanities is to follow the seminal postcolonial scholarship of Tongan and Fijian cultural theorist Epeli Hau’ofa by exploring a counter-hegemonic narrative in scholarly treatment of the global oceans, then how can it respond with respect? This risk applies equally to academic literary inquiry, with a more inclusive mode of receptive and plural blue humanities as an emerging response.

MALE GAZE AND THE HEROINES OF OUR ERA A Thesis submitted to the faculty of 4 5 San Francisco State University In partial fulfillment of ~l(? I & the requirements for f l Lh4 the Degree .cu Master of Arts In Cinema Studies by Cady Monroe Conaway San Francisco, California May 2018 CERTIFICATION OF APPROVAL I certify that I have read “Male Gaze and the Heroines of our Era” by Cady Monroe Conaway, and that in my opinion this work meets the criteria for approving a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Master of Arts in Cinema Studies at San Francisco State University. Celine Parjfenas Shimizu, Ph.D. Professor MALE GAZE AND THE HEROINES OF OUR ERA Cady Monroe Conaway San Francisco, California 2018 Laura Mulvey defines the objectification of women in cinema through the cinematic apparatus as ‘the male gaze.’ Since publication, Mulvey’s theories have been highly debated and revised, including by Mulvey herself. This long theoretical discussion is continuously relevant in our discussions of the representation of women on screen in Hollywood. With the addition of Michel Foucault’s theories on power and resistance, I challenge Mulvey’s original assertion that independent feminist cinema is the location of a cinema free of the male gaze. Through an in-depth analysis of Muvley’s original work and various revision to her theory, I will approach Patty Jenkins’ 2017 film Wonder Woman as a change to the dominant cinematic apparatus that creates the male gaze. Through the subversion of the trope of the spectacle, Jenkins presents to us a world on screen without the male gaze, inviting further changes in the dominant Hollywood film world for more accurate and authentic, non-objectifying representations of women.

Paper written for History 124 (American Cultural and Intellectual History) with Dr. Kristen Foster. © Mark Kelley Mark Kelley 1 The Golden Age of Comic Books; Representations of American Culture from the Great Depression to the Cold War Before beginning a historical study of comic books, it is necessary to shed our modern perception of the medium. Modern cultural logic regards comic books as a children’s medium, a decidedly minor facet of American popular culture. However, research suggests that, during the Golden Age, comic books had a large cultural base of many ages. A Yank Weekly article, published in November of 1945, cited the estimates of the Market Research Company of America, which found that about 70 million Americans, roughly half of the U.S. population, read comic books. The ages of readers heavily favored children, with 95 percent of all boys and 91 percent of all girls between the ages of six and eleven reading comic books. The study also revealed a high percentage of adult readers, with 41 percent of men and 28 percent of women aged eighteen to thirty admitting to regularly reading comics. This impressive study proves that, in the Golden Age, comic books were not limited to children. 1 Comic books are a fitting subject for the study of American culture because comics are a uniquely American cultural creation.
