HAWKS’ TRIO HEADLINES RESERVES FOR 2015 NBA ALL-STAR GAME -- Duncan Earns 15 th Selection, Tied for Third Most in All-Star History -- NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2015 – Three members of the Eastern Conference-leading Atlanta Hawks -- Al Horford , Paul Millsap and Jeff Teague -- headline the list of 14 players selected by the coaches as reserves for the 2015 NBA All-Star Game, the NBA announced today. Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors earned his first All-Star selection, joining teammate and starter Stephen Curry to give the Western Conference-leading Warriors two All-Stars for the first time since Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway in 1993. The 64 th NBA All-Star Game will tip off Sunday, Feb. 15, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The game will be seen by fans in 215 countries and territories and will be heard in 47 languages. The Hawks’ trio is joined in the East by Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat, the Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving . This is the 11 th consecutive All-Star selection for Wade and the 10 th straight nod for Bosh, who becomes only the third player in NBA history to earn five trips to the All-Star Game with two different teams (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kevin Garnett). THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS REVISITING THE SUPERSTAR EXTERNALITY: LEBRON’S ‘DECISION’ AND THE EFFECT OF HOME MARKET SIZE ON EXTERNAL VALUE ANDREW DAVID BRYANT SPRING 2013 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor David Shapiro Professor of Economics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The movement of superstar players in the National Basketball Association from small- market teams to big-market teams has become a prominent issue. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.

  • Orlando's Dwight Howard Wins 2009-10 Nba Defensive
ORLANDO’S DWIGHT HOWARD WINS 2009-10 NBA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD PRESENTED BY KIA MOTORS NEW YORK , April 20, 2010 – Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic is the recipient of the 2009-10 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award presented by Kia Motors, the NBA announced today, marking the second straight season the All-Star has earned the honor. The 6-11 center became the first player to lead the league in rebounding and blocks (1973-74 was the first season blocks were kept as an official statistic) in consecutive seasons, averaging 13.2 rebounds and 2.78 blocks. Howard also paced the league in field goal percentage (.612), becoming the first player to lead the NBA in all three of those categories since the NBA started keeping blocked shots. He also became only the fifth player in NBA history to lead the league in rebounding for at least three consecutive seasons. Howard recorded an NBA-high 64 double- doubles, including three 20-point/20-rebound efforts. As part of its support of the Defensive Player of the Year Award, Kia Motors America will donate a 2011 Kia Sorento CUV on behalf of Howard to the Nap Ford Community School in Parramore, a community in downtown Orlando. Nap Ford's vision is to empower students to maximize their potential to be contributing members of society. Kia Motors will present a brand new Sorento, the Official Vehicle of the NBA, to the charity of choice of each of four 2009-10 season-end award winners as part of the “The NBA Performance Awards Presented by Kia Motors.” Following this season, Kia Motors will have donated a total of 12 new vehicles to charity since the program began in 2008.

Without Al Horford, Hawks face biggest challenge in 76ers | ajc.com Page 1 of 2 Print this page Close Without Al Horford, Hawks face biggest challenge in 76ers By Chris Vivlamore The Atlanta Journal-Constitution 5:32 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2012 The Hawks have passed a series of increasingly difficult tests following the loss of Al Horford. A bigger challenge is now before them. In a battle of division leaders, the Hawks (11-4) travel to Philadelphia (10-4) for a game Friday night. It’s a game that will challenge the Hawks, especially without the scoring, rebounding and defense of Horford. The 76ers rank third in the NBA in scoring average (101.0), second in points allowed (87.4) and first in point differential (plus-13.6). The game also is on the road, where three of the Hawks’ four losses have come. The Hawks have rolled off four home wins since the loss of their two-time All-Star: against Charlotte (two wins at time of game), Minnesota (four), Toronto (four) and Portland (eight). They are part of a run of seven wins in the past eight games. After Friday, of the Hawks’ next seven opponents, only San Antonio has more than seven wins. The stretch ends with another game against Philadelphia, at home Feb. 4. The Hawks insist they won’t take any opponent lightly. “Minnesota came into this building, and everybody looks at the name on the front and the first thing [they think], they are not a very good ballclub,” coach Larry Drew said.
