Carmichael Arena The North Carolina faithful long have referred to Carmichael Arena as Blue Heaven and the name certainly fits. Located among the tall pine trees at the heart of the North Carolina campus, Carmichael has been home to the gymnastics program since it reached NCAA status in 1982. Carolina recently completed a multi-million dollar facelift of Carmichael Arena, which has made it one of the top Olympic sports gymnasiums in the country. The arena is named for the late William D. Carmichael Jr., a highly popular figure on campus who served as the university’s comptrol- ler, then as its vice-president. The gymnastics office is housed in Carmichael, steps from the competition floor. The facility also serves as home to the women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as housing offices for many other coaches in UNC’s highly-successful Olympic Sports programs. The Carolina men’s basketball program called Carmichael home from 1965 until its move to the Dean E. Smith Center midway through the 1985-86 season. Under coach Dean Smith, the Tar Heels compiled a home record of 169-20 at Carmichael.

TRAINING FACILITY CAROLINA GYMNASTICS

In 2015, the Rams Club and the UNC Athletic Depart- ment finished a complete renovation of the gymnastics practice facility within Fetzer Gym. At a ceremony in November, the space was officially named the Derek P. Galvin Gymnastics Facility in honor of Carolina’s long-time head coach. Galvin is just the third women’s gymnastics coach in school history and is the second-longest tenured current coach at UNC. The 2017 season marks his 36th year with the program. The facility became a reality with the generous dona- tions of 175 contributors, who raised more than $580,000 for the project. The Rams Club and the gymnastics pro- gram would like to specifically thank the Nassif Family, Ed and Cathe Hege, Fritz and Kevin Russ, and Claude and Sarah Snow for their generous support. Former gymnast Claire Smith spearheaded a campaign among former letterwinners to raise more than $200,000 for the project. “I’m so thankful and appreciative of the donations from our donors and former gymnasts,” said Galvin. “Carolina is truly a special place and I’ve been blessed to coach so many outstanding student-athletes during my tenure.” The enhancements provide the gymnastics team with a more comprehensive and efficient practice space than ever before. The floor was elevated to allow for the in- stallation of several foam pits, specifically for training on vault and uneven bars. The gym was converted to LED lighting, and championship banners celebrating Carolina’s success in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League are on display. “Our student-athletes now have the latest in teaching tools, safety apparatus and potential training progres- sions,” says Galvin. “This facility allows us to put our gymnasts in the best position to reach their full potential. Additionally, the renovation greatly enhances the visual appearance of the facility, and makes it a more attractive asset to prospective student-athletes in the recruiting process.”

The gym was officially designated the Derek P. Galvin Gymnastics Training Facility at a ceremony in November of 2015.
