2012 ANNUAL REPORT ReaCHING NEW HeIGHTS COCA: SERVING CONSTRUCTION The Council of Ontario Construction Associations (COCA) is a federation of construction associations, the largest and most representative group of Industrial, Commercial, Institutional (ICI) and heavy civil construction employers in the province. Our member organizations represent more than 10,000 construction employers who employ upwards of 400,000 workers. COCA brings the concerns of our members to the attention of Queen’s Park and is committed to working with the government to ensure that Ontario’s legislative landscape is one in which our industry can grow and prosper. A History of Success COCA was created at the behest of then Premier Bill Davis to act as a single voice for the ICI and heavy civil sectors of the construction industry in dealings with Queen’s Park. In 1975 more than 20 associations came together as the Council of Ontario Contractors Associations. By 1985, the growing organization took steps to become independent with its own staff, mandate and offices. That same year, the name was changed to the Council of Ontario Construction Associations. More than 35 years after its inception, COCA can look back on very significant achievements for the construction industry. Just a few of these include: In 2012, COCA successfully lobbied for a special WSIB premium rate for COCA played a key role in the construction industry winning an exemption for Executive Officers and the new Rate Group 755 for EOs was established with a a single Executive Officer in every construction office under Bill 119 reduced rate COCA was a key proponent of Safety Groups to assist smaller companies COCA advocated for the WSIB to develop a plan to eliminate their unfunded COCA led a group of associations to secure a new Limitations Act in liability and achieve 100% funding within 15-20 years.     Post Event Report for the Breakfast at Queen’s Park Stakeholder Event Hosted February 26, 2019 May 2019 1 EDCO’s Breakfast at Queen’s Park Stakeholder Event Event Background The EDCO Stakeholders Relations Committee undertook the planning of a Queen’s Park event to create an opportunity for EDCO stakeholders to meet with MPPs to showcase the good work happening in economic development around the Province. The Committee had been discussing the idea since 2017 and began planning the event in early 2018. The Honourable Jeff Yurek, MPP representing the riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London, supported the event as the host MPP. EDCO provided an opportunity to its Members to partner on the event and received an outstanding response with 23 communities and organizations accepting the invitation. Initially, the event was planned as an evening reception on Monday, December 10, 2018. Following the early and unexpected adjournment of the Legislative Assembly on December 5, 2018, the decision was made to reschedule the event to take place early in the New Year. The intention behind rescheduling was to host the event during session to ensure that MPPs would be on-site and therefore, more likely to attend. Rescheduling options for an evening reception early in the New Year were limited due to other bookings at the Legislative Building. As a result, the event was rescheduled as a breakfast event to take place on February 26, 2019.     ONTARIO'S NEW CABINET REVEALED Posted on July 16, 2018 Categories: Insights, Publications On Friday, June 29, 2018, Ontario’s new government was sworn in. Who are the new players and what will they bring to their new roles? Here are a few insights into who’s who, and how the Ford Cabinet breaks with convention. This 21-member Cabinet is dominated by rural and suburban ridings. The longstanding tradition of critics not becoming Ministers of the same portfolio comes to an end here, with multiple Ministers transitioning directly and countless others selected based on their expertise, not just their political value. The most significant example of this, of course, is Vic Fedeli, who served as critic of Finance for years and now becomes Minister. While it breaks with convention, there is no one in Cabinet who has spent more time studying Budgets than Mr. Fedeli, who published five editions of “Focus on Finance” analyzing the Liberal books. The most recent, published this May, was 130-pages long. He also earned credibility with Premier Ford for his work as Interim Leader during the leadership race. Christine Elliott is also serving in a role for which she has very recent experience, Minister of Health. Prior to her return to politics for the leadership race, Ms. Elliott was the Patient Ombudsman. She also fills the role of Deputy Premier, a nod to her strong showing in the PC leadership race as well as her previous role as Deputy Leader alongside Tim Hudak. Keeping his word, Doug Ford appointed a farmer to the Agriculture portfolio: Ernie Hardeman, who reprises his role, having served as Minister in the Mike Harris government.

Sikhs are an ethnoreligious group and indigenous people of the Punjab region currently governed by India. The Sikhs have faced persecution under Indian rule since the British granted independence to India in August 1947. The religious status of Sikhism and identity of its followers – the Sikhs – has been usurped by the Constitution of India which superimposes and labels Sikhs as "Hindu" in Article Explanation II to Article 25(b) of the Constitution. As a national ethnoreligious minority of India, many fundamental human rights have not been granted to the Sikhs under Indian rule. The Sikh community and the Indian Government began their clash long ago with the Explanation II to Article 25 of the constitution of India which classifies Sikhs as Hindus.
