The Salle des Gardes (Guards Room) and the immense Salle ACCESS des Gens d’armes (Hall of the soldiers), built under King Philip the Fair, still remain from the days of the medieval palace, as do the kitchens built under King John the Good. The Kings of France abandoned the palace at the end of the 14th century to settle in the Louvre and in Vincennes. It then took on a judicial role, and part of the palace was converted into prison cells. The Conciergerie became one of the principal places of detention during the French Revolution, with the installation of the Revolutionary Court. Its most famous prisoner was Marie- Antoinette. During the Restoration, a commemorative chapel was erected on the site of her cell. New: - An improved Revolution exhibition, - Fully restored kitchens, - Immersive visit tool: the Histopad. Conciergerie et Sainte-Chapelle sont les seules traces visibles de cette période, mais en fait, comme le souligne l’architecte Christophe Bottineau, les structures architecturales médiévales sont toujours là. LE SITE DU PALAIS ROYAL ET LES PREMIERES CONSTRUCTIONS L’historien Yann Potin rappelle que l’idée d’une continuité du palais de la Cité est discutable. Les plus anciens vestiges, découverts au XIXe siècle, datent en effet du XIIe siècle. La localisation d’un oppidum dans la partie occidentale de l’île, sur le site du palais, est aujourd’hui remise en cause par les archéologues, qui posent l’hypothèse d’une fondation gallo-romaine ex nihilo, à quelques kilomètres de la ville proto historique. Les rares chantiers Le palais royal de Paris, 4e lancette, de fouilles, menés principalement lors des travaux des années 1842- baie XV, Histoire des Reliques. 1898, montrent seulement la présence de demeures privées jusqu’aux IIIe et IVe siècles. La construction d’un palatium, abritant le Tribunal du prétoire et un hébergement occupé temporairement par les empereurs en campagne, est contemporaine de celles de deux ponts et des fortifications (dont un tronçon a été identifié sous la cour du Mai), édifiée lors du repli dans l’île au Bas Empire. Dans les siècles qui suivent, le palais paraît abandonné : les Mérovingiens y séjournaient peut-être, mais les sources mentionnent plutôt une résidence à Cluny ; les Carolingiens s’installent outre-Rhin, laissant probablement l’usage des lieux aux comtes.

The purpose of the current phase is to consolidate and fully restore the dome. A vast self-supporting scaffolding system ê a great technical feat ê has been built around the dome and will remain in place for two years. Last October the President of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, Philippe Bélaval, presented the President of the French Republic with a report on the role of the Pantheon in promoting the values of the Republic. The title of this public report was “Pour faire entrer le peuple au Panthéon” (Getting people into the Pantheon), and it contains suggestions on how to make the monument more attractive, encourage French people to truly identify with it, and give it a greater role in Republican ceremonies. In order to give concrete form to these proposals, which have since been approved by the public authorities, the CMN has chosen to ask a contemporary artist to carry out a worldwide project embodying the values of this monument, which is so emblematic of the French Republic. Hence for the first tim e the worksite hoardings installed around a national m onum ent will be used to present a contem porary artistic venture instead of a lucrative advertising cam paign.

    This walking tour focuses primarily on Middle Ages Paris, but it begins at the beginning, in the place where Paris originated on the Ile de la Cité. The walk ends atop Mount Sainte-Geneviève on the Left Bank. In between, the tour winds through the narrow medieval streets of the Ancient Cloister Quarter on the Ile de la Cité and the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank.
