After an injury-plagued season that limited him to 35 games, senior Roger Spaulding returns as the front runner at second base. Junior Kevin Klingenbeck should again see action at both second and third base. Behind the plate, Dan Young will likely platoon with Thompson for a third straight year. Senior Mike Alley also returns and could win a starting job in right field. Veterans Brent Bernard and Dan Bassler both saw some starting time last year and will contribute again. A pair of transfers will also see plenty of playing time. Senior Mike Wolters, an Ohio native who played at Illinois, is a first baseman/outfielder. Junior Bob Jesperson offers good speed and defense in center field. On the mound, senior Leonard Griffen and junior Mike Mathile, both right-handers, are back to anchor the starting rotation. Mathile fashioned a 10-2 record and 1.91 ERA in 1989. He completed nine of his 12 starts and struck out 68 batters in 84.2 innings. Griffen also started 12 games and posted a 7-2 mark with a 4.50 ERA. He is a career 18-game winner. Senior Mike McCall, junior Todd Pittman and sophomore John Smith all started at least five games last year and should make strong bids to complete the "We've got some mashers, don't we?" mused third starting corps. Pittman saw the most action of the trio baseman Brian Spears during one of the Wright State and finished with a 5-2 record and 3.35 ERA. McCall, University baseball tea'm's lopsided wins last year. COACHING STAFF

Ron Nischwitz Head Coach 16th Year ( 432-313) Like a fine wine, Wright State head baseball coach Ron Nischwitz continues to get better with age. Nischwitz, in his 16th season at the helm of the Raider baseball program, is charged with the duty of building it to the prominence in Division I that it enjoyed in Division II. In 1987, Nischwitz led Wright State to a 41-14 record and a tie for second place at the NCAA Division II national championships. It resulted in the team's first trip to the College World Series. Last season's 45-12 record marked the seventh-straight winning season for Wright State baseball. Nischwitz has coached Wright State to eight appearances in the NCAA regional tournament and has sent 12 of his players to the professional level: Nischwitz also serves on the AABC summer baseball committee, which oversees and facilitates all NCAA-sanctioned summer baseball leagues. Nischwitz spent four seasons, from 1961 to 1966, as a pitcher with the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians and the New York Mets. As a , his finest season was in 1962 with the Tigers when he posted a 3.90 . Following a forced retirement from professional play due to arm problems, Nischwitz spent one season as a pitching coach in the Mets' farm system, where one of his players was Tom Seaver. A native of Dayton, Ohio, and a graduate of Fairview High School, Nischwitz pitched for two years at The Ohio State University where his record was 11-1 as a junior, and he received All-America honors. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from Ohio State in 1961 and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Dayton in 1969. While playing professional baseball, Nischwitz worked as a computer designer at NCR during the off season. After several years with NCR, he joined ACB Advantage Financial Services, the professional collection agency he purchased three years later. He still owns and manages the agency in addition to performing his coaching duties. Ron and his wife, Sandy, have three children, Jeff, Brad and Lisa.

But Wright State has been fortunate enough to have the tandem of head coach Ron Nischwitz and assistant coach Bo Bilinski in charge since 1975. Bilinski, a former Wright State baseball standout, is primarily responsible for working with the hitters and outfielders, coaching third base and recruiting. Bilinski was a Raider from 1972 to 1974, recording his finest season as a senior when he led the team in hitting with a .302 average. He also set a school record with six home runs and 33 RBI. In four pitching appearances, he posted a 1.46 ERA. He was inducted into the Wright State Athletic Hall of Fame last February. A graduate of Stebbins High School in Dayton, he also spent a year on the Wright State basketball team in .1969-70. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree, Bilinski joined the Dayton Police Department. He has served the last 13 of his 15 years on the force as a detective. He continues to participate in baseball during the summer, playing in Dayton's Class AA league. In 1985 he hit 36 home runs to help lead his team, H. H. Morgan, to the American Baseball Congress National Championship. Bo and his wife, Julie, live in Kettering with their 7-year-old daughter, Sally, and infant son, Alex.

Mike Day Assistant Coach Second Vear Beginning his second season on the Raiders' staff as hitting and catching coach, Mike Day brings a unique perspective on Division I success. Day played on four College World Series teams from 1982-85 with Oklahoma State. He led the Cowboys as a junior with a .390 batting average and continued that prowess into the postseason with a team-high .522 mark (12-23) at Omaha. As a senior, he hit .320 with 16 home runs and 90 RBI. The two-time All-Academic Big Eight pick earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics education. In 1984, Day played on the USA team that placed third in the World Amateur Baseball Championships in Cuba. The Montreal Expos made him a 13th-round draft choice in June 1985, and he spent three years in their farm system. Day is single and lives in Tipp City.

Chip Schaffner ·Assistant Coach Third Vear Chip Schaffner, also in his third season with the Raiders' coaching staff, coaches first base and also works extensively with the junior-varsity squad. Schaffner is a 1978 graduate of Parkway High School in Rockford, where he earned 10 varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. He earned All-Ohio honors in baseball as a senior. Ted Mills Assistant Coach Second Year Ted Mills begins his second season as an assistant coach, but he is hardly a novice when it comes to amateur baseball. The former University of Cincinnati pitcher has been a manager in the Dayton AA summer league since 1964 and has compiled nearly 1,000 victories. His teams have won three national championships during his tenure: in 1967, 1971 and 1984. Mills was inducted into the Dayton Amateur Baseball Commission Hall of Fame in 1977. RETURNING PLAYERS

Batting average jumped to .330 last year, along with two home runs and 22 RBI. Was able to cut down on his strikeouts from freshman season but needs to continue that improvement. Went 3-for-3 with a walk vs. Ball State on May 14. Has improved his release time to second base. Should continue to split time between catcher and designated hitter. 39 Kevin Walke So~homore 6-0 165 Xenia Right-handed pitcher Did not see any varsity action last season. Finds himself ticketed for duty in 1990 as a setup man in the bullpen. Velocity has shown significant improvement.

19 Dan Young Junior 6-0 195 Beavercreek Catcher Combined with Thompson to give WSU a strong catching duo for the past two years. Batting average fell last season to .295 but his defense was a big improvement over rookie campaign. Very difficult hitter to strike out. Possesses a hard-nosed, aggressive attitude and is a take-charge player in the infield. Had four 3-hit games in 1989, including a 3-for-5, three-RBI day against Dayton on April 26. 36 Jeff Ashton Freshman 5-10 175 Mentor Infielder/Catcher Perhaps the most pleasant surprise among the freshmen. Has the arm to play all infield positions, including catcher. Hits well to all fields. Hustle and attitude could earn him substantial playing time.

13 Brian Buck Freshman 6-2 170 Northfield/Nordonia Outfielder Exhibits good hitting potential, but needs to cut down on his long swing. Smart player with a strong work ethic. A four-year letterwinner, he was named to the Metro Conference first team as a senior.

3 Gabe Canary Freshman 6-2 185 Portsmouth Outfielder Good power potential at the plate for this newcomer. Led Portsmouth to the state semifinals and a Southern Ohio Conference title as a senior. An all-conference pick in both baseball and football. Will work on hitting mechanics to make full use of strength.

44 Bob Jesperson Junior 6-0 170 White Lake, WI Outfielder A transfer from Triton Junior College in Illinois, he'll compete for a starting spot in center field. Helped lead Triton to a 45-15 record last season with a .335 batting average and 22 stolen bases. A line-drive, spray hitter. Offers good speed and a strong arm in the outfield.

28 Brian Kingdeski Freshman 6-4 185 Brewerton, NY/Cicero North Syracuse Right-handed pitcher Will compete for spot-starting duty in the rotation. Has a good sinking motion on his fast ball. 9 Ron Mechler Sophomore 6-1 170 Hamilton/Ross Oufielder/Pitcher Set for his first college action after sitting out last season as a proposition 48 casualty. Has very little experience on the mound, so contributions there may be limited. Needs to speed up his delivery.

40 Tony Ramsdell Freshman 6-2 200 Winthrop, NY/St. Lawrence Central Right-handed pitcher Like Kingdeski, he will be looking to see some starting action as a first-year player. An excellent athlete. Led prep team to the state semifinals as a senior. Also finished basketball career second on the school's all-time scoring list. Made the first team All-Northern Athletic Conference in both sports.

6 John Sbrocco Freshman 5-8 150 Willoughby Hills/Lake Catholic Second baseman Outstanding prospect in the infield. With the team's depth there, he will have an opportunity to learn the college game and gain needed experience. Helped lead Lake Catholic to state semifinals as a sophomore. An all-tournament pick at the Connie Mack state tourney and a North Coast League all-conference selection.

27 Michael Wolters Senior 6-2 185 Coldwater Outfielder/First baseman Returns to college competition this season after sitting out 1989. Transferred from Illinois, where he was a three-year starter. Led the Illini with a .368 batting average as a junior, along with 11 doubles, one homer and 25 RBI. As a sophomore, he hit .364 with six home runs and 46 RBI. A probable starter at either first base or the outfield. 1990 BASEBALL ROSTER
