WOMEN OF SAINT MICHAEL GIFTS COMMITTEE ANNOUNCE $400,000 FOR 2019 RECIPIENTS The WOSM Spring Luncheon was the backdrop for both a wonderful moment celebrating the work and ministry of event honoree and parishioner Anne Coke, and also the announcement that its Gifts Committee awarded $400,000 in grants to 71 nonprofits that work with those living in poverty in Dallas County. These 71 agencies focus on assisting with crisis needs (shelter, hunger, clothing) or achieving financial stability. For 60 years, the Women of Saint Michael Gifts Committee has given back to the community grants totaling over $9.7 million. Much of the funding for the Gifts Committee comes from the profits of the St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange gift shop in Highland Park Village, celebrating its 60th year, and the oldest operating storefront in the “Village”. The Exchange was originally started in 1939 as a consignment shop, was later operated by the Jr. League of Dallas as a service project, and in 1958 was sold to the Women of Saint Michael for $1500. “The money we receive from the Women of Saint Michael keeps our air conditioning going, and all of our 400 clients warm in the winter and cool in the summer” - Daniel Roby, Executive Director of Austin Street Center This philanthropy is guided by the spirit of giving expressed in scripture,”For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” -Matthew 25:35 SEE PHOTOS AND FULLY STORY AT SAINTMICHAEL.ORG/WOSMSL19 2019 WOSM GIFTS COMMITTEE RECIPIENT LIST 2nd Saturday CDC Dallas CASA Interfaith Family Services Restored Hope Ministries Aberg Center for Literacy Dallas Christian Women’s Job Corps Irving Cares Services of Hope Access and Information Network Dwell With Dignity Jonathan’s Place Shared Housing Center Achieve East Dallas Community Organization Jubilee Park & Community Center SMAA Austin Street Cooks AIDS Services of Dallas Exodus Ministries Legacy Counseling Center SMAA Tela, Honduras, Mission Trip Alley’s House Family Compass LIFT St. Philip’s School & Community Association for Independent Living The Family Place Mosaic Family Services Center Attitudes and Attire Focus on Teens Network of Community Ministries Turtle Creek Recovery Center Austin Street Center Gateway of Grace New Friends New Life Under 1 Roof AVANCE Genesis Women’s Shelter North Dallas Shared Ministries The Well Community Behind Every Door Heart House North Texas Food Bank Visiting Nurses Association Brighter Tomorrows Honduras Threads Oak Cliff Empowered Wesley-Rankin Community Center Brother Bill’s Helping Hand Hope Supply Co. • The Religious Development of the Community
THE RELIGIOUS DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMMUNITY by John C. Perry Keene was first settled by people from "Ye Godly, God fearing and God serving Province of Massachusetts"; therefore, the settlement of a minister and the location and erection of a meetinghouse were of prime importance to the inhabitants. Grants and charters to the several townships required that the proprietors "support an orthodox minister" by assessment from time to time on themselves. The early church and community affairs were somewhat interlocked as the church building was also used as the central meeting place for town affairs and special events. All inhabitants who desired to attend reli gious services worshiped in the one church. Today in the city of Keene the worshiper has a choice of some 19 churches, representing most of the leading denominations in the United States. The United Church of Christ in Keene When Keene was first settled in 1736 and the land divided among the proprietors, a lot was set aside for a future meetinghouse. The lo cation of the meetinghouse and the accompanying cemetery was on the rise of ground just north of the Branch River, at the south end of the Town Street, about where the house of Howard B. Lane now 412 stands. When only one dwelling house had been erected the settlers were resolved to record God's name among them; therefore, on Sep- tember 30, 1736, it was voted that they build a meetinghouse 40 feet long, 20 feet stud and 35 feet wide; to underpin, cover and inclose the same, and lay down boards for the lower floor; and to set the same at the south end of the Town Street at the place appointed by the General Courts Committee.

  • The Making of the Church of Ireland Book of Common Prayer 2004 HAROLD MILLER
The Making of the Church of Ireland Book of Common Prayer 2004 HAROLD MILLER In the 2004 Church of Ireland Book of Common Prayer the Preface describes the work of compilation in the following words: • We sought to unify the worship of God’s people, while allowing reasonable scope for diversity within the essential unity of the Church’s prayer. • We were determined to produce a book which would have equal capacity to enrich private as well as corporate devotion. • We desired that this book, like previous editions of it, should properly articulate and embody the Church’s faith. • We hoped that the book would strengthen our bonds of unity with sister churches who share our approach to common prayer, and we were therefore fully attentive to the reports of successive meetings of the International Anglican Liturgical Consultation. These sentences capture, in a brief and simple form, some of the key elements that have been distinguishing features of Irish Anglican worship and ethos over the centuries, and that are of great importance to our self-understanding in the Church of Ireland. To put them in other words: the commonality of prayer; the relationship between public and private worship; lex orandi, lex credendi; and a sense of worldwide catholicity. In this lecture, I will take these four areas one by one, and use them as windows into the making of the new Church of Ireland Book of Common Prayer. Unity in Diversity: The Commonality of Prayer We sought to unify the worship of God’s people, while allowing reasonable scope for diversity within the essential unity of the Church’s prayer.
