December Worship Schedule at Pilgrim, Outdoors and on Facebook (No Bible Classes when Church Re-opens) Pilgrim’s Worship Schedule ~ Bible Classes for children and adults will temporarily be cancelled until further notice due to the Covid virus. Sunday School is being done via the US Mail. Worship Service begins at 10 a.m. We will temporarily suspend our after Worship Service Fellowship until further notice, as per CDC. We will continue to hold our Sunday on Facebook, in addition to our Outdoor Worship Services.

NOTE: If churches are still unable to hold Worship Services in their Sanctuaries due to the Coro- na Virus lockdown, watch Pastor Kilian’s Sermons at https://www.facebook.com/PilgrimLutheranSantaMonica/ . You may also attend our outdoor Worship Services on Sundays, at 10 a.m. (Weather permitting.)

Outdoor Worship Services are being held in our updated “Pilgrim Park!” We have enjoyed worshiping outdoors, under our huge blue tarp, in our beautiful “Pilgrim Park!” We want to thank all of you have been attending our services, some of you driving many miles to get here. We want to thank Allen for his live streaming filming on Facebook so those who cannot be with us, can still participate with us at 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings or watch the Service later in the day. We want to thank Michael for assisting our security guard, and we want to thank all of you who help us put away our chairs and tables after the Worship Service! Your help is much appreciated. And we want to especially thank Pastor Kilian for all the extra effort and work he has done this year, to keep Pilgrim going and to keep us connected via his Facebook services, his Daily Devotionals and his Outdoor Worship Services. If the government increases the lockdown rules, we might not be able to continue to hold our outdoor Worship Services. We will keep you updat- ed via email. Pilgrim’s Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Worship Service will be held via Facebook. We will not have an out- door service Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. However, our Virtual Worship Services will be beautiful. We will have Christmas trees and Pastor Kilian will light the Advent Candles. We plan to also have Mary play some Christmas hymns. The Church Office will keep everyone informed.

The Mission of Pilgrim Lutheran Church is to be an incarnation of Jesus Christ to people of all ages in the Santa Monica area and throughout the world.

Advent Worship Services Pilgrim has traditionally held Wednesday Night Advent Worship Services in the Sanctuary to observe the beginning of the Christmas Season, preparing for the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Due to the Covid 19 Corona Virus government lock- down, we are not allowed to hold in-house Worship Services. However, we will hold special on-line Midweek Services on Wednesdays in December. Pastor Kilian will light the Advent candles and explain the meaning of each candle. He will also Present a on the topic: “Jesus, Son of Man and Son of God.” (see below)

The Meaning of the Advent Ring The Advent Ring is a Christian tradition that symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent. It is a circular candle holder with five candles. During the season of Advent one candle on the Ring is lit each Sunday until all of the candles, including the fifth “Christ” candle, are lit on Christmas Eve. Each candle represents an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Most Advent Rings use three colors of candles—purple or blue, pink and white.

Advent Midweek Worship and Christmas Theme: “Jesus, Son of Man and Son of God!” Tracing the genealogy of Jesus through Abraham, King David and Mary & Joseph, we see Him as True Man, even as He was True God. Jesus came into the world as a baby to be one of us and one with us! At the same time, He is the God Who fulfills the promises given to Abraham, the God Who establish- es the Throne of David forever, and the God Who comes to the lowly and humble, like Mary and Jo- seph. Each Midweek Worship Service we will examine a different “Sonship” of Jesus showing Him to be the Son of Man and culminating with His identity as the Only Begotten Son of God. To bring the real gift of Christmas, Jesus needed to be both God and Man in order to fulfill the Father’s Plan of Sal- vation. By examining this Divine mystery we will gain a greater appreciation for God’s gift of Christmas as we grow in our faith as the Children of God. Join us virtually via Pilgrim's Facebook page on Wednesdays December 2nd, 9th and 16th as we build the Anticipation of the Advent Season and prepare for Christmas. December 2nd “Jesus: Son of Abraham” December 9th “Jesus: Son of David” December 16th “Jesus: Son of Joseph and Mary” December 24th Christmas Eve, “Jesus: Son of Man and Son of God” December 25th Christmas Day, “Christmas is for Children of God!” We will NOT hold weekly Bible Study during Advent. Adult Bible Classes, Worship Services and more…

“Wednesday Night Live” and “Prime Time” Bible Study NOTE: Due to the COVID –19 Virus Pandemic, Pilgrim will not hold Worship Services or Bible Study Classes in the Church until further notice. We will be using the CDC Guidelines when we reopen. We recently began holding outdoor Worship Services in our Pilgrim Park, and they are live streamed on Facebook for those unable to attend in person. There will be NO Virtual Bible Studies during Advent. Instead, please watch our Wednesday Night Virtual Advent Services.

We are Re-printing Pastor Kilian’s Excellent October 27,2020 Daily Devotional:

PASTOR'S DAILY DEVOTIONAL- OCTOBER 27, 2020 (TUESDAY) PRAYER

"The Lord is far from the wicked: but He hears the prayers of the righteous." Proverbs 15:29

It is not our works or deeds that make us righteous, but rather the gift of Faith in Christ given by God. If one believes in Jesus, they have this gift and can be certain that the Lord hears their prayers. This Proverb makes it clear that our prayers are powerful and effective because they are heard by the Almighty God.

In a recent weekly Bible Study on the Book of Proverbs (found on our Facebook page) I had commented on how appropriate it is to read the Book of Proverbs and to pray each verse as you do so. Martin Luther on his commentary of the Book said this, "(Solomon) puts his teaching into proverbs, so that it can be grasped the more easily and kept the more readily. Anyone who intends to become righteous might well take this as a handbook or prayer book for his daily use, read it often, and ponder his own life in it."

I love Luther's recommendation. The Proverbs contains so much for attaining wisdom and discipline; for un- derstanding words of insight and acquiring a disciplined and prudent life. This is the reason it was written by the power of the Spirit through the hand of Solomon. When we read each proverb, we do well to pray that God would apply the truth to our personal life. Proverbs speaks on so many topics that are relevant to everyday life, that praying them as we receive them brings in God's power to make them real in our life. We not only receive true words of wisdom as we read the proverbs, but we ask that God apply them unto us as well. God is always ready to give His good gifts to His Children who ask. We will read and pray that we not only hear but do, and share!

Know that you are loved!

Peace and Joy, Pastor Kilian

9 Fancy Christmas Holiday Events are not necessary, Jesus is the Reason for the Season It will seem unusual and somewhat sad, to not worship in our beautiful Sanctuary with Christmas Trees, a Nativity Scene, special candles, special music, gifts for children and visitors. We will view our Services on Facebook and although we are apart, technology will allow us to be together virtually. We will not have our usual Christmas Party, nor will we go Christmas Caroling to nursing homes and private homes. We will not worship inside our beautiful Sanctuary during Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. However, we must remember our Lord Jesus Christ, when He was born, had nowhere to go. There was No room at the Inn. Joseph and Mary kept going until they found a stable and Baby Jesus was born, with no bed to lay his head. Our Nativity Scenes show Jesus, Mary and Baby Jesus sleeping with animals, not in a hotel, not with heat, food and supplies. They had nothing, only the Heavenly Father, watching over them. Most of our members regularly attend our Worship Services (or they did until the Covid lockdown) but many people only attend Church on Christmas Eve and Sunday. Pilgrim’s wonderful members have been faithfully watching our Sunday Services via Facebook and recently we began holding outdoor Worship Services. We are blessed to have our outdoor location to hold services. We love our beautiful Sanctuary, but worship- ping our Lord is not about beautiful Sanctuaries, or majestic music. It is about being humble and Worship- ping our Lord, thanking Him for coming to earth as an innocent baby, then giving His life for us on , and rising from the grave on Easter Sunday, so we may “live forever.” We must also remember that for many reasons, some self inflicted due to drugs and alcohol or mental illness, some due to other circum- stances, there are many “homeless people” living on the streets in Santa Monica and nationwide with no bed to lay their heads. Please consider donating to a local charity or Lutheran Social Services in Long Beach, to help those who have no bed to lay their heads.

From the Unconventionalbusinessnetwork.org Integrity Moments is a 60 second workday devotional that provides business leaders with helpful insight into what the Bible says about our work and how we can fully integrate our faith into our vocational call- ing. (Mr. Rick Boxx) As many desk jobs have been moved to home offices, overworking has become a greater challenge for many people. A recent blog from Teamwork suggests that the “work from home-ers” interviewed have “spent most of their day on work and haven’t properly managed to switch off and unwind.” The close proximity of the office, now being in-home, requires a higher-level intentionality toward taking needed breaks and toward working only during scheduled work time. For those who struggle with overworking, Psalm 73:26 says, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Time in the Word of God is a safeguard for schedules and brings rest for the weary. The Bible will offer rest and peace for an overworked mind and body.
