  • Jimmy Raney Thesis: Blurring the Barlines By: Zachary Streeter
Jimmy Raney Thesis: Blurring the Barlines By: Zachary Streeter A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Jazz History and Research Graduate Program in Arts written under the direction of Dr. Lewis Porter and Dr. Henry Martin And approved by Newark, New Jersey May 2016 ©2016 Zachary Streeter ALL RIGHT RESERVED ABSTRACT Jimmy Raney Thesis: Blurring the Barlines By: Zach Streeter Thesis Director: Dr. Lewis Porter Despite the institutionalization of jazz music, and the large output of academic activity surrounding the music’s history, one is hard pressed to discover any information on the late jazz guitarist Jimmy Raney or the legacy Jimmy Raney left on the instrument. Guitar, often times, in the history of jazz has been regulated to the role of the rhythm section, if the guitar is involved at all. While the scope of the guitar throughout the history of jazz is not the subject matter of this thesis, the aim is to present, or bring to light Jimmy Raney, a jazz guitarist who I believe, while not the first, may have been among the first to pioneer and challenge these conventions. I have researched Jimmy Raney’s background, and interviewed two people who knew Jimmy Raney: his son, Jon Raney, and record producer Don Schlitten. These two individuals provide a beneficial contrast as one knew Jimmy Raney quite personally, and the other knew Jimmy Raney from a business perspective, creating a greater frame of reference when attempting to piece together Jimmy Raney.

My name is Anthony Brown, and I am conducting the Smithsonian Institution Oral History with NEA Jazz Master, harmonica virtuoso, guitarist and whistler, Toots Thielemans. Hello… Thielemans: Yes, my real name is Jean. Brown: Jean. Thielemans: And in Belgium… I was born in Belgium. Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Isidor. Four first names. And then Thielemans. Brown: That’s funny. Thielemans: And in French-speaking Belgium, they will pronounce it Thielemans. But I was born April 29, 1922. Brown: That’s Duke Ellington’s birthday, as well. Thielemans: Yes. For additional information contact the Archives Center at 202.633.3270 or [email protected] 1 Brown: All right. Thielemans: Yes, same day. Brown: Yeah, same day. Just a few years later. [laughs] Thielemans: [laughs] Oh, Duke. Okay. Brown: Where in Belgium? What city? Thielemans: In Brussels. Brown: That’s the capitol. Thielemans: In a popular neighborhood of Brussels called Les Marolles. There was… I don’t know, I wouldn’t know which neighborhood to equivalent in New York. Would that be Lower East Side? Or whatever… popular. And my folks, my father and mother, were operating, so to speak, a little beer café—no alcohol but beer, and different beers—in this café on High Street, Rue Haute, on the Marolles.

Konitz: [singing] Happy W’alentines, Happy W’alentines. Kirchner: . .Two thousand eleven, and we’re in Lee Konitz’s apartment in Manhattan, and I’m Bill Kirchner, and we’re about to begin the oral history with Lee. Konitz: Welcome. Kirchner: Let’s start with the most obvious possible thing. Konitz: I was born at a very early age. Kirchner: Most of us were. Konitz: [chuckles] Kirchner: We have that in common among other things. For additional information contact the Archives Center at 202.633.3270 or [email protected] 1 Page | 1 Konitz: [chuckles] Kirchner: What was your date of birth? Konitz: October thirteen, nineteen twenty-seven. Kirchner: And for the record, what is your full name? Konitz: “Leon” was my given name and “Lee” has become my second name. The fact is that I had two older brothers and I was supposed to be a girl, and my name was going to be “Leonna”. So I became “Leon” and then after a while my friends called me “Leo”, and then “Lee”, and it’s going to “Le”. When I get to “L” I think I’m leaving town. Kirchner: [Laughs] As I understand it from Andy Hamilton’s book your parents were both born in Europe? Konitz: Yes, my father in Austria, my mother in the Ukraine.

  • Music \(1924\2261939\): a History of Belgium\222S First Jazz Journal
Music (1924–1939): A History of Belgium’s First Jazz Journal http://www.crj-online.org/v7/CRJ-BelgiumJazzJournal.php Home > V7 > Music (1924–1939): A History of Belgium’s First Jazz Journal Music (1924–1939): A History of Belgium’s First Jazz Journal Matthias Heyman Introduction Belgium’s fascinating jazz history is something of a paradox in that it is little known locally or externally, yet it is filled with unique events—such as the creation of one of the world’s first hot clubs devoted to jazz (in 1932)—and significant proponents, some of whom were among the most highly regarded musicians on the European jazz scene in the 1920s and 1930s. But rather than survey the early history of jazz in Belgium and its performers, I will introduce the Belgian jazz journal Music (1924–1939) along with its creator, Félix-Robert Faecq (1901–1992), as it is an ideal way to explore some of the nation’s key figures, policies and perspectives in the era between the two world wars. Other Belgian music magazines existed, but in general they devoted little or no attention to jazz, a topic that was also largely ignored by the general press. As such, Music played an instrumental role in the introduction, reception, and popularization of jazz in Belgium, and at times was even used as a mechanism for achieving specific goals. Despite this periodical’s tremendous importance, it is now nearly forgotten, and unfortunately there are only two complete runs available anywhere, both in Belgian archives. [1] It is hard to assess to what extent lack of access to this magazine has affected how Belgian jazz history has been perceived, but one thing is certain: Music is a vital tool for any serious student of the history of Belgian jazz in its first few decades, a period often neglected in examinations of this nation’s jazz past.

  • Seldon Powell
1 The TENORSAX of SELDON POWELL Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Feb. 16, 2021 2 Born: Lawrenceville, Virginia, Nov. 15, 1928 Died: New York, Jan. 25, 1997 Introduction: I remember very well our first encounter with Seldon Powell; through the exciting 1956 Atlantic album “Boss Of The Blues” with Joe Turner. We enjoyed his music very much from the start, and realizing the enormous number of recording sessions he had taken part in, we called him a ‘tenorsax potato’, suitable for all jazz dishes. It was meant as an honour. In our opinion, SP did never get the recognition he deserved History: First musical studies at Brooklyn and New York Conservatories 1947-49 and graduated at Juillard 1957. First job with the band of Betty Mays 1949, Tab Smith at Savoy Ballroom 1949 and Dec. 1949 with Lucky Millinder until 1951. Did army service 1951-52 playing in bands in France and Germany where he was stationed. After discharge returned to New York and played with Sy Oliver, Erskine Hawkins, Neal Hefti, Louis Bellson and Don Redman 1952-55. Studied at Juillard. In 1958 he travelled to Europe with Benny Goodman’s band, and then he played briefly with Woody Herman. In the 1960s he worked chiefly for ABC TV but also recorded heavily. His numerous recordings as a studio musician include many made in the late 1960s and early 1970s with soul and soul-jazz musicians, including Groove Holmes (ca. 1973) and sessions in the big bands that accompanied Gato Barbieri (1974) and Anthony Braxton and Dizzy Gillespie (both 1976).

  • Selected Discography
Part 1 of Selected Discography Milt Hinton as Leader or Co-leader Compiled by Ed Berger (1949-2017) - Librarian, journalist, music producer, photographer, historian, and former Associate Director, Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University. It is estimated that between 1930 and 1995, Milt Hinton performed on more than nine hundred jazz record sessions. He made at least as many records, especially during the ’50s and ’60s, that featured hundreds of non-jazz performers, as well as countless jingles and film and television soundtracks. Specific and comprehensive information about Hinton’s recordings outside of jazz is nearly impossible to obtain. A partial list of non-jazz performers with whom he recorded includes: Paul Anka, Pearl Bailey, Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, Brook Benton, Archie Blyer, Teresa Brewer, Diahann Carroll, the Clancy Brothers, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Sam Cooke, Bing Crosby, Vic Damone, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis Jr., the Drifters, Percy Faith, Eddie Fisher, Connie Francis, Judy Garland, Jackie Gleason, Arthur Godfrey, Eydie Gormé, Skitch Henderson, John Lee Hooker, Lena Horne, Langston Hughes, Mahalia Jackson, Jack Jones, Frankie Laine, Steve Lawrence, Guy Lombardo, Johnny Mathis, Paul McCartney, Bette Midler, the Mills Brothers, Mantovani, Willie Nelson, Patti Page, Leontyne Price, Leon Redbone, Della Reese, Debbie Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, Kate Smith, Barbra Streisand, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Bobby Vinton, Dionne Warwick, Roger Williams, Jackie Wilson, and Hugo Winterhalter. The recording location is the New York City area unless otherwise noted. CDs have the same title as the LPs unless otherwise noted. [MH comp] indicates that Hinton was the composer or co-composer of a piece.
