The gallery at 510 West 25th Street will focus on Song's recent work, including a new installation related to his projects for Documenta 13 and the Kiev Biennial. The gallery at 534 West 25th Street will feature eighteen of Song's performances, photographs, videos, and installations made between 1994 and 2012. Song Dong Doing Nothing is on view at 510 West 25th Street, New York from January 18 through February 16, 2013, and at 534 West 25th Street from January 18 through February 23, with an opening reception for the public on Thursday, January 17, 6 to 8 pm, at both galleries. For over two decades, Song Dong has been at the forefront of Chinese contemporary art, embracing performance, installation, video, sculpture, painting, and calligraphy, and often combining mediums within a single work. Using modest, quotidian materials, Song confronts notions of impermanence, the reality of living in contemporary China, ideas of waste and consumption, the transformation of China's urban environment, and the value of self-expression, even when it leaves no trace. Simultaneously poetic and political, personal and global, his work often explores larger social and cultural issues by drawing on deeply intimate, biographical experiences.

McWeeny Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT STRICKLAND, CYNTHIA A., M.A., June 2009, Art History Yin Xiuzhen: Mapping the Fabric of Life (90 pp.) Director ofThesis: Marion Lee This thesis examines the circumstances of production and layers of meaning in the installation works of Beijing-based contemporary artist Yin Xiuzhen (b. 1963, Beijing). The approach is to analyze several groups of Yin Xiuzhen’s installations to read how the artist has chosen to map the transformations of the economy, culture, built environment, and power structures, first of her native Beijing and then concentrically outward into the global arena. The result will chronicle the journey of the artist’s successful negotiation of place, space, materials, and message: what I call mapping the fabric of life. As an academically trained oil painter, the 1989 graduate of Capitol Normal University in Beijing initially had limited opportunities to explore a new creative path in art production. During the 1990s, she emerged along with other experimental artists in China who worked to create conceptual art. This thesis focuses on the choices both taken and resisted by Yin Xiuzhen as she developed her artistic voice and located her message within homegrown installations, using as materials fragments and remnants of lives and places.

Record-breaking auction prices make good headlines, but they also confer a value on the artworks that few of their makers would have dreamed possible when those works were originally created— sometimes only a few years ago, in other cases a few decades. It is easy to understand the artists’ surprise at their flourishing market and media success: the secondary auction market for Chinese contemporary art emerged only recently, in 2005, when for the first time Christie’s held a designated Asian Contemporary Art sale in its annual Asian art auctions in Hong Kong. The auctions were a success, including the modern and contemporary sales, which brought in $18 million of the $90 million total; auction benchmarks were set for contemporary artists Zhang Huan, Yan Pei-Ming, Yue Minjun, and many others. The following year, Sotheby’s held its first dedicated Asian Contemporary sale in New York.

I argue that infrastructure’s utilitarianism has relegated it to a category of nothing to see, and that this tautology effectively shrouds other possible interpretations. My findings establish counter-narratives and critiques of Beijing, a city at once an immerging global capital city, and an urban space fraught with competing ways of seeing, those crafted by the state and those of artists. Statecraft in this dissertation is conceptualized as both the art of managing building projects that function to control Beijing’s public spaces, harnessing the thing-power of infrastructure, and the enforcement of everyday rituals that surround Beijinger’s interactions with the city’s infrastructure. From the spectacular architecture built to signify China’s neoliberal approaches to globalized urban spaces, to micro-modifications in how citizens sort their recycling depicted on neighborhood bulletin boards, the visuals of Chinese statecraft saturate the urban landscape of Beijing. He focuses particularly on “the critical study and cultivation of how the living body (or soma) is used as the site of sensory appreciation (aesthesis) and creative self-stylization.”1 Somaesthetics is grounded as an interdisciplinary project of theory and practice. Many in the academic field have asked Richard Shusterman why he has not included “the art of eating” in his somaesthetics. He recently decided to do this and he has held lectures on this subject in Italy with the title The Art of Eating. L’Art di mangiare at the conference Food, Philosophy and Art - CIBO, Filosofia e Arte, Convergence Pollenzo, April 4-5, 2013 in collaboration with students from the University of Gastronomic Sciences. He has opened a new field, which is discussed in this article. The main subject of this article on visual art and eating will be a presentation of the internationally renowned Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, who has created many surprising installations in Thailand, other countries in the east, Europe and particularly the US, where he resides and is professor at Columbia University. His installations often take the form of stages or rooms for sharing meals, cooking, reading and playing music. The architecture or other structures he uses always form the framework for different social events.

Featuring thirty-eight artists and collectives working in and outside of Korea, Reenacting History is a large-scale international special exhibition that focuses on how the body and gestures have revealed the current social and cultural contexts and interests as an artistic medium since the 1960s until today. The body is a medium through which “I” build a relationship with others and encounter different situations in the world, as well as a social space in which the politics of reality such as power, capital, and knowledge are at work. As such, the body has been a major existence throughout the entire scope of human life, and numerous artists have employed the body as an artistic medium since the 1960s. Based on various ways in which bodily gestures, as an artistic medium, approach and artistically react to our life stories, the exhibition is divided into three parts.     John Clark Contemporary Art and the Contemporary Art Museum: Shanghai and Its Biennale1 Prehistories No doubt there are varied and rich prehistories to modernity in the art worlds of many Chinese cities apart from Beijing—Tianjin, Nanjing, Chengdu/Chongqing—but it is in Shanghai in the 1850s and 1860s that a patronage culture, for art at least for guohua (traditional Chinese painting), began and continued into the 1910s. Imbricated within this patronage culture were intense artistic exchanges with Japan and Europe, from the 1860s to the 1930s, effected through sending Chinese artists abroad to study. There were also a number of Japanese artists who exhibited in China, particularly at the first National Fine Arts Exhibition, in 1929. At the same time, the advent of modernity, beginning in the 1920s, was associated with a broad consumer culture that articulated new desires and, in particular, new roles for women—producing a new culture of visual representation in contemporary magazines, cinema, and advertisements. Thus, from the mid-nineteenth century onward the urban space of Shanghai increasingly constituted a foreground for the modern in China. This was physically upended, if not entirely destroyed, during the murderous, politically myopic conflicts between Nationalists and Communists in 1927, and in the long, bloody struggle with the Japanese in 1932, which was followed by a pause and then continued as all-out war from 1937 to 1945. Even then the caesura was not complete, and the civil war lasted from 1945 to 1949. One of the problems with divorcing contemporary art from art history involves actual and potential types of modernity, some existing in parallel to, some in conflict with, each other.

  • Acclaimed Chinese Artist to Build City out of Biscuits at Selfridges
    ACCLAIMED CHINESE ARTIST TO BUILD CITY OUT OF BISCUITS AT SELFRIDGES 15th – 22nd February This week will see the humble digestive biscuit elevated to a new role – as part of a major artwork that will be created in Selfridges by acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist Song Dong. On 15th February, Song Dong will start to build a city entirely out of biscuits on Selfridges’ lower ground floor. Whilst he has built other biscuit cities before, in Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai and Paris, this work, specially commissioned by Selfridges, is the first to be created and exhibited in the UK. Entitled ‘Eating the City’, it will use approximately 72,000 biscuits, supplied by McVities, including Digestives, Chocolate Digestives, Rich Tea, HobNobs, Caramels and Fruit Shortcake, and will be about twelve metres long. The city is scheduled to be completed by Wednesday 22nd February when customers will be invited to eat it. Beijing-based Song Dong uses performance, photography, video and installations to explore ideas of transience, perception and the ephemeral nature of existence. Of his "Eating the City" project, he says: “As cities in Asia grow, old buildings are knocked down and new ones built almost everyday. Some cities have even been built from scratch in 20 years. Currently in Selfridges windows is another commissioned art installation by Chinese artist Wang Qingsong. The work, entitled ‘Follow Me’, explores our fascination with shopping and highlights the irresistible allure of consumer goods to all people everywhere.
