Figure Skating Program WELCOME WORLD OUTGAMES FIGURE SKATING PROGRAM WELCOME WORLD OUTGAMES DEAR PARTICIPANTS AND VISITORS As Mayor for Culture and Leisure, I am very happy and proud to welcome you to World Outgames, an event I have followed closely from the outset. It was a unanimous City Council which got the Outgames to Copenhagen, and the broad political backing is an expression of the liberal-mindedness which pervades the city. Copenhagen is an open, tolerant and diverse city. It is no accident that it was in Copenhagen City Hall that the fi rst same-sex registered partnership was entered into 20 years ago. That was both an important step in the campaign for equal rights for gays and lesbians and an event which caused many Copenhageners to boast about the city’s and the country’s liberal-mindedness. But there is still a lot to fi ght for. And alongside the sports, the concerts and the art, which all make World Outgames a festive event, the human rights conference during Outgames is therefore important. Because the sports and the culture take place against a serious background. Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people are met with intolerance in many places around the world. At the conference, experiences will be exchanged about which political and activist approaches can make a positive difference. There is much to experience, enjoy and learn from during World Outgames, and I wish everyone welcome to a happy experience in Copenhagen. The Gay Games is one example of this. The first Gay Games in 1982 had 1,300 participants. By 1994, the Gay Games drew 11,000 participants. In three articles, this master’s thesis examines various aspects of gays and lesbians in sports. The first article covers the Gay Games. It includes information about its supporters and protestors, a brief history and a look ahead to the upcoming Gay Games and beyond. The second article profiles a rugby player on the Carolina Kodiaks, one of two gay rugby teams in North Carolina. The third article examines how journalists, especially those in sports departments, cover LGBT issues. The thesis aims to explore the issues of the gay and lesbian community as they pursue sports and to show that LGBT issues in sport will become more important as society becomes more tolerant.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The first world Outgames, held in Montreal in the summer of 2006, brought together some half a million glbtq people and allies for sports competitions, cultural events, and a conference on human rights. The Outgames were born out of controversy. Montreal had been chosen in 2001 to host the 2006 Gay Games, but disputes over financing between the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) and the Montreal organizing committee led to an impasse that resulted in a decision by the FGG to withdraw the award to Montreal and instead hold the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago. Olympic champion Mark Tewksbury had been a key member of the Montreal committee. After the loss of the Gay Games to Chicago, he took the lead in proposing that the city hold its own glbtq sports festival in 2006. With excellent facilities, including some built for the 1976 Olympic games, and strong support from federal, provincial, and local governments, Montreal had all the makings of a successful venue. The Montreal organizers sought to create an event that both celebrated and transcended sport. They invited glbtq people from around the world to participate not only in athletics but also in cultural programs and, importantly, in a conference on glbtq human rights. International Conference on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Human Rights Launching a major international event was a considerable challenge for the organizers of the Outgames, and the task was made more difficult when some 250 people from 60 countries invited to the International Conference on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Human Rights were initially denied visas into Canada despite the fact that many of these participants had received financial help from the Canadian International Development Agency to cover their expenses.

    War and Pride: “Out Against the Occupation” and Queer Responses to the 2006 Lebanon War Natalie Kouri-Towe Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal August 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts in Communication Studies © Natalie Kouri-Towe 2008 ABSTRACT In this thesis, I examine the role of queerness, solidarity and movement in anti-war activism relating to the 2006 Lebanon War. I investigate two events called “Out Against the Occupation” that were organized during the summer of 2006 in response to the war. These events emerged as a queer response to the context of various gay pride events held throughout the war that failed to develop an anti-war response to the war in Lebanon. These gay pride events include the Divers/Cité festival held annually in Montreal, the first World OutGames held in Montreal, the World Pride events held in Jerusalem and the Queeruption gathering held in Tel Aviv. I argue that we must rethink the role of movement, queerness and solidarity in order to understand how movements of resistance emerge. I do so by examining the role of subjectivity in how we come to move and orient ourselves towards others. A theoretical framework informed by feminist, queer, and postcolonial theories is used to analyze the discursive constructions and constitution of subjectivities of Japanese female and ‘trans’ athletes in the ‘masculine’ sports of soccer and wrestling. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) was employed to analyze Japanese mainstream newspaper and magazines published between 2001 and 2012 and in-depth interviews with twelve Japanese female and ‘trans’ athletes in wrestling and soccer. The result of the media analysis illustrates that Japanese mainstream media used multiple normative and normalizing ii discursive tactics to construct Japanese female athletes within patriarchal, sexist, and heterosexist gender and sexual norms. These discourses were also mobilized in the reporting of international competitions in which the success of Japanese female athletes was appropriated to construct Japanese national identity in order to recuperate Japanese masculinity.

Goals event Goals event: - After the successful conference in the course of the 2007 EuroGames, organized by EGLSF (European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation) and the LGBT federation of Flanders (Holebifederatie), a European sports charter was signed to counter homophobia in sports. Among the signatories were the Flemish Minister of Sports and the Belgian Football Association. Antwerp wishes to continue in this spirit by organizing the Outgames in 2013 and a human right conference. - In 2013 Belgium will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the introduction of civil marriage for same-sex partners. Even though not everyone, gay or straight, will want to get married, the provision to allow for it was a legal milestone in obtaining equal rules for all residents of Belgium. This fact, the history of the making of and the situation 10 years later can be used as a starting point for LGBT events and discussions on many aspects of LGBT rights in the world. Target groups: - LGBT from all over the world - The regular visitor and other minorities such as followers of various religions, persons belonging to ethnic minorities, persons with a physical impairment and young and elderly people. 2.
