(Unpublished manuscript—copyright protected Baker Publishing Group) Introduction The Monastic Impulse t seems sensible to suppose that there are at least two reasons why you might be reading this book: (1) you already have an interest in monasticism and Iare wondering what this book has to say about the history and institution of the monastic religious life; or (2) you have no idea about monasticism and want to learn what it is. I hope, in either case, that this book will be of value to you. But first I will need to speak to those who do not know too much about monasticism, which is the exact position that I was in nearly twenty years ago. Being raised a Southern Baptist in Virginia in the 1970s and 1980s did not give me a good grounding in the finer points of monastic life and history. Having received a decent public school education, I do not ever recall reading about monks and nuns, though it seems reasonable to suppose that I did at some point. It was not until I took a church history class that included the Middle Ages and the Reformation era during my final semester at a Christian college that I was finally introduced, in a proper manner, to monasticism. My introduction came through the charismatic and important figure Bernard of Clairvaux, a twelfth-century Cistercian monk (of whom more will be said later). I recall asking myself, What is a monk? What is a Cistercian? Several months and a few books later, I knew that I had discovered my academic area of interest. Not only was I captivated by the personality of Bernard of Clairvaux, but everything about monasticism was fascinating to me. From there I went to St. John’s School of Theology in Collegeville, Minnesota, to study monks with monks. Needless to say, I was hooked and I continue to be hooked. Hence, a book on the history of Christian monasticism geared toward a ressourcement of the tradition for the twenty-first century.1 The untranslatable French word ressourcement is most often used in con- nection with the theological movement known as the nouvelle théologie (new theology), a reaction among younger Roman Catholic theologians of the early twentieth century to the theological dominance of neo-Thomism.2 Since then, however, the task of ressourcement has come to be viewed as the recovery by contemporary Christian scholars of insights from the church’s past. Thus it is appropriate to speak of a biblical ressourcement or a liturgical ressourcement. The Roman Catholic theological milieu after the Second Vatican Council is often described holistically as a climate of ressourcement. Semantically the idea of ressourcement falls within the range of other words that speak to a recovery or retrieval, which are common themes in monastic history— particularly during the Middle Ages—as will be seen below. Ressourcement is not just a rediscovery or recovery of the past for the past’s sake, but it is a rediscovery and recovery of the past in order to give fresh expression to contemporary faith. In the words of French philosopher Charles Péguy (d. 1914), “A [true] revolution is a call from a less perfect tradi- tion to a more perfect tradition, a call from a shallower tradition to a deeper tradition, a backing up of tradition, an overtaking of depth, an investigation into deeper sources; in the literal sense of the word, a ‘re-source.’”3 Martin Luther’s recovery of the apostle Paul’s teaching that justification is by faith alone, an insight that led to the Protestant Reformation, becomes in hindsight (and anachronistically) a moment of ressourcement. Likewise, as we will see below (in chap. 14) in the Vatican II decree Perfectae Caritatis, the council fathers commended the recovery of ancient sources as a way to imagine the future. The decree explicitly states that the way forward for monasticism is by looking to its past and by appropriating the good that is found there. Though paradoxical, in order to move forward in faith, one has to go backward first. This sentiment, that the future lies in the past, is not only a Roman Catholic 1. Defining Monasticism When considering monasticism it is always important to start with definitions since many forms of religious life are oftentimes wrongly labeled “monastic.” The English word “monk” comes from the Latin word monachus, which is a transliterated form of the Greek word monachos.

Although many contemporary scholars consider unbelief a prerequisite for analyzing and interpreting scriptures unbiasedly,1 the monk John Cassian (d. circa 435 C.E.) would see such lack of faith as detrimental to the entire process of understanding the scrip- tures. This divergence of opinion results in part because these contemporary scholars and Cassian view the end of scriptural interpretation differently. While a contemporary agnostic scholar strives in his or her exegetical work primarily for eru- dition, originality, and positive peer reception, Cassian wants to unlock the meaning of scriptures for the sake of living a life of unceasing prayer and encounter with God. 1 D.Z. Phillips describes the hermeneutical situation today in terms of a false dichotomy between a hermeneutics of recollection, which presupposes belief on the part of the interpreter in the religious texts being analyzed, and a her- meneutics of suspicion, which sees the unbelief of the interpreter as his or her greatest tool for accessing the meaning of the religious text, since the re- ligious worldview of the text hides or warps the truth of the text. As a middle position between these two extremes, Phillips offers the hermeneutic of con- templation, which allows the interpreter to accept the religious worldview of sacred texts for the purpose of interpretation without actually believing in the worldview presupposed by the text.

Sufism, being the marrow of the bone or the inner dimension of the Islamic revelation, is the means par excellence whereby Tawhid is achieved. All Muslims believe in Unity as expressed in the most Universal sense possible by the Shahadah, la ilaha ill’Allah. The Sufi has realized the mysteries of Tawhid, who knows what this assertion means. It is only he who sees God everywhere.1 Sufism can also be explained from the perspective of the three basic religious attitudes mentioned in the Qur’an. These are the attitudes of Islam, Iman and Ihsan.There is a Hadith of the Prophet (saw) which describes the three attitudes separately as components of Din (religion), while several other traditions in the Kitab-ul-Iman of Sahih Bukhari discuss Islam and Iman as distinct attitudes varying in religious significance. These are also mentioned as having various degrees of intensity and varieties in themselves. The attitude of Islam, which has given its name to the Islamic religion, means Submission to the Will of Allah. This is the minimum qualification for being a Muslim. Technically, it implies an acceptance, even if only formal, of the teachings contained in the Qur’an and the Traditions of the Prophet (saw). Iman is a more advanced stage in the field of religion than Islam. It designates a further penetration into the heart of religion and a firm faith in its teachings.

Gregory’s work was part culmination of pre-existing practice, part innovation. I contend that Gregory transformed fading, ancient institutions and ideas—the Imperial annona, the monastic soup kitchen-hospice or xenodochium, Christianity’s “collection for the saints,” Christian caritas more generally and Greco-Roman euergetism—into something distinctly ecclesiastical, indeed “papal.” Although Gregory has long been closely associated with charity, few have attempted to unpack in any systematic way what Gregorian charity might have looked like in practical application and what impact it had on the Roman Church and the Roman people. I believe that we can see the contours of Gregory’s initiatives at work and, at least, the faint framework of an organized system of ecclesiastical charity that would emerge in clearer relief in the eighth and ninth centuries under Hadrian I (r. 772-795) and Leo III (r.

ART MARMORSTEIN Northern State University Aberdeen, South Dakota From the late nineteenth century onward, eschatology has been one of the most important factors considered in determining the date, authorship, and integrity of works written during the NT and intertestamental periods. Followers of Albert Schweitzer and Johannes Weiss, for instance, have argued that eschatological ideas provide clear guidelines for separating Jesus' genuine teaching from later additions made by the church. According to this "consistent eschatological"approach to the NT, only those teachings reflecting confidence in a nearly-immediateParousia can with certainty be attributed to the "historical" Jesus or his first followers.' The Schweitzer/Weiss hypothesis has been used as a starting point by many patristic scholars, most notably Martin Werner. Werner tried to show that the "de-eschato1ization"of the gospel message, which took place in response to the delay of the Parousia, caused nearly every theological difficulty the church would later face.2 Recent studies in both patristics and the NT have moved away from the consistent eschatological approach. Brian Daley, for instance, provides an impressive refutation of Werner's monocausal explanation of the development of Christian theology.) Nevertheless, there is still some tendency to make at least some use of 'The eschatological theories of Weiss (Die Predigt Jesu vom Reiche Gottes, Gottingen: 1892) and Schweitzer (Von Reimarus zu WrederTiibingen:J.C.B. Mohr, 19069, particularly the idea that disappointment in the delay of the Parousia was a major problem in the early church, have been echoed again and again, not only in twentieth-century scholarly literature, but in the popular press.

    1 Eusebius and His Ecclesiastical History Eusebius’s Ecclesiastical History (HE) is the most important of his many books. It created a new literary genre that would have a long and influential history. In an often-quoted statement, F. C. Baur called Eusebius the father of ecclesiastical his- tory, just as Herodotus was the father of historical writing in general.1 The Ecclesi- astical History is our single most important source for recovering the history of the first three centuries of Christianity. And it is the centerpiece of a corpus of writings in which Eusebius created a distinctive vision of the place of the Christian church in world history and God’s providential plan. A book of such significance has attracted an enormous body of commentary and analysis driven by two rather different motives. One was the value of the HE as a documentary treasure trove of partially or completely lost works. For a long time, that was the primary driver of scholarly interest. The past two generations have seen the emergence of a second trend that focuses on Eusebius as a figure in his own right, a writer of exceptional range, creativity, and productivity, and an actor on the ecclesiastical and political stage.2 How, for example, did current events shape the way Eusebius thought and wrote about the church’s past? And what can his con- struction of the past tell us in turn about Christian consciousness and ambition during a time of enormous transition? Seen from that angle, the HE becomes not a source for history but itself an artifact of history, a hermeneutical redirection that will be applied to other works of Christian historiography in this book.3 1.

    Saint Anthony Mary Claret AUTOBIOGRAPHY Edited by JOSÉ MARIA VIÑAS, CMF Director Studium Claretianum Rome Forward by ALFRED ESPOSITO, CMF Claretian Publications Chicago, 1976 FOREWORD The General Prefecture for Religious Life has for some time wanted to bring out a pocket edition of the Autobiography of St. Anthony Mary Claret to enable all Claretians to enjoy the benefit of personal contact with the most authentic source of our charism and spirit. Without discounting the value of consulting other editions, it was felt there was a real need to make this basic text fully available to all Claretians. The need seemed all the more pressing in view of the assessment of the General Chapter of 1973: "Although, on the one hand, the essential elements and rationale of our charism are sufficiently explicit and well defined in the declarations 'On the Charism of our Founder' and 'On the Spiritual Heritage of the Congregation' (1967), on the other hand, they do not seem to have been sufficiently assimilated personally or communitarily, or fully integrated into our life" (cf. RL, 7, a and b). Our Claretian family's inner need to become vitally aware of its own charism is a matter that concerns the whole Church. Pope Paul's motu proprio "Ecclesiae Sanctae" prescribes that "for the betterment of the Church itself, religious institutes should strive to achieve an authentic understanding of their original spirit, so that adhering to it faithfully in their decisions for adaptation, religious life may be purified of elements that are foreign to it and freed from whatever is outdated" (II, 16, 3).

ISBN 0827236492. Religious educators need a vibrant spiritual life. This seems obvious but it is easy to overlook. When we think about education, we immediately think about our own schooling where we were required to regurgitate information. We do not think about deeper dimensions of formation and what this demands of the teacher. But “can we teach Christians to pray,” authors Karen-Marie Yust and E. Byron Anderson stress again and again, “if we ourselves do not know a life of prayer?” (p. 19). Taught by God is designed to address this oversight. It retrieves a rich variety of paths to Christian wisdom. In fact, a more accurate subtitle is “Spiritual Resources for Religious Educators.” Organized around a four-part exploration of teacher identity, teaching context, models, and evaluation, the book essentially reviews a series of classical texts (Luther, Kierkegaard, Julian of Norwich, John Cassian, Jane de Chantal, Francis de Sales, Anthony, John Bunyan, John Climacus, Thomas à Kempis, Benedict, Catherine of Siena, Diadochos, Ignatius, Henri Nouwen, and Simon Weil) as well as contemporary educational theorists, such as Parker Palmer and Mary Belenky. The summaries of primary texts and secondary source commentary on them makes for dry reading, a problem “easily rectified,” Yust and Anderson say, “through further reading” of the classics (p. 5). Reading this book alongside sample works would enhance its value. Unfortunately the advice of many of these figures stands at real odds with the lives of the book’s likely readers.
