Section IV. Report of the Board of Directors I. Overview In the first half of 2015, the pesticide market was sluggish with a weak demand while the domestic chemical pesticide output still increased slightly, causing severe oversupply as well as fiercer competition in the pesticide market. Additionally, Hubei Province is well-known for its diverse landforms, including mountains, hills, mounds and plains. This area is called “The Province of Thousand Lakes” due to the abundance of water resources. Geographical names are exclusive names given to physical or anthropogenic geographic entities at specific spatial locations and are important signs by which humans understand natural and human activities. In this study, geographic information systems (GIS) technology is adopted to establish a geodatabase of geographical names with particular characteristics in Hubei Province and extract certain geomorphologic and environmental factors.

  • Sword Fight Between a Runaway 'Slave' and a Thief Catcher
Section 4.5 Sword Fight between a Runaway ‘Slave’ and a Thief Catcher This is the third case in the Book of Submitted Doubtful Cases that transpired in the wake of the Imperial instruction proclaimed by Liu Bang in 202 BCE and its resulting legislation (discussed in the preface to sec. 4.2) ordering the popula- tion displaced after the collapse of the Qin dynasty and the subsequent civil war to return to their natal homes and register themselves and their property with the Han authorities. Many who had formerly been enslaved could regis- ter themselves within thirty days and then return to their previous commoner lives, provided they had not committed any offense. As with the case documented in section 4.2, this case (dated one year ear- lier) was submitted from Jiangling County, located in present-day Jingzhou, Hubei, the former capital of the state of Chu, by the same Assistant Magistrate Ao, but this time the record mentions his superior, Magistrate Yu. The case was first submitted for adjudication to officials at the commandery, where the two main offenders were sentenced, but then forwarded to the Han capital, pre- sumably because the Nan Commandery officials wanted their judgment of the matter confirmed. The chief judicial officer of the empire, the Commandant of the Court, most likely Xuan Yi 宣義 (d. 181 BCE), requested Emperor Gaozu himself to pronounce final judgment, presumably because he, too, was not completely sure whether Nan Commandery had judged the case correctly. The Emperor did indeed confirm the judgment decided by the lower court.

  • Are China's Water Resources for Agriculture Sustainable? Evidence from Hubei Province
sustainability Article Are China’s Water Resources for Agriculture Sustainable? Evidence from Hubei Province Hao Jin and Shuai Huang * School of Public Economics and Administration, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai 200433, China; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +86-21-65903686 Abstract: We assessed the sustainability of agricultural water resources in Hubei Province, a typical agricultural province in central China, for a decade (2008–2018). Since traditional evaluation models often consider only the distance between the evaluation point and the positive or negative ideal solution, we introduce gray correlation analysis and construct a new sustainability evaluation model. Our research results show that only one city had excellent sustainable development capacity of agricultural water resources, and the evaluation value of eight cities fluctuated by around 0.5 (the median of the evaluation result), while the sustainable development capacity of agricultural water resources in other cities was relatively poor. Our findings not only reflect the differences in the natural conditions of water resources among various cities in Hubei, but also the impact of the cities’ policies to ensure efficient agricultural water use for sustainable development. The indicators and methods Citation: Jin, H.; Huang, S. Are in this research are not difficult to obtain in most countries and regions of the world. Therefore, the China’s Water Resources for indicator system we have established by this research could be used to study the sustainability of Agriculture Sustainable? An International Conference on Democracy in East Asia and Taiwan in Global Perspective Session VI: Democracy in China Taiwan and Mainland China’s Democratic Future Yun-han Chu Distinguished Research Fellow, Institute of Political Science, Academia Sinica; Professor of Political Science, National Taiwan University [email protected] This is only a draft. Please do not cite or quote without the author’s permission. Paper prepared for delivery at an international conference on Democracy in East Asia and Taiwan in Global Perspective, organized by the Department of Political Science at National Taiwan University, Taipei, ROC, August 24-25, 2011. 316 Taiwan and Mainland China’s Democratic Future Yun-han Chu Abstract Taiwan is important for its objective (analytical) relevance, i.e., for its heuristic value in projecting China’s political future. Taiwan’s unique mode of democratic transition illustrates a viable exit strategy for a hegemonic party to engineer a peaceful and gradual transition from one-party authoritarianism on the basis of its successful record of economic modernization. Taiwan is also important for its subjective relevance, i.e., its demonstration effect in the eyes of both the citizens on the mainland and the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In addition, Taiwan is important because many Taiwan-based political and social actors also serve as agents of change. Many of the island’s social actors have helped China’s political liberalization, in particular through the transmission and dissemination of information, ideas and practical knowledge. The political predicament the CCP leadership faces today is quite similar to what had confronted the KMT elite during the 1970s and early 1980s.

However, a low transmission rate hinders conventional snail surveys in identifying areas at risk. In this study, Schistosoma japonicum infected sentinel mice surveillance was conducted to identify high risk areas of schistosomiasis transmission in Hubei province, China.
