  • Paolo Canevari

1 2 Fireflies in the Night Take Wing Post midnight Video Following last summer’s Fireflies in the Night—a three-night Art Survey non-stop dusk-to-dawn video survey of some of the best art of its kind produced internationally that was projected on screens located on the Great Lawn of the Stavros Niarchos Park—this year’s installment, titled Fireflies in the Night Take Wing will consist of ten separate looped video programs screened at ten sites scattered throughout the SNFCC buildings and grounds. In addition the program will include two immersive works by Shirin Neshat that will fill the “Book Castle” at the pinnacle of the National Library of Greece. Each of these hour-long loops will be composed of different works by a wide array of interna- tional artists – including Greek artists active in the cosmopolitan context of contemporary art. In the spirit of French modernist poet and critic Charles Baudelaire’s concept of the urban wan- derer – “flâneur” who discovers the marvels of the city accord- ing to chance and whim – this dispersed and varied program may be discovered in whatever sequence suits the viewer’s fan- cy. Moreover, these far flung screenings will in effect map the key areas of the SNFCC and will be presented to the general public after each evening’s schedule of stage events. People will be encouraged to come-as-they-are, make themselves comfort- able and follow their curiosity. It is our firm belief, that whether seen only in parts or in its en- tirety, the video program being made available to the diverse audience for which it is intended will be of genuine interest to any and all comers.

Italian Genius Now. Home Sweet Home A project of Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci – Prato Curated by Marco Bazzini Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci is pleased to announce the project Italian Genius Now Home Sweet Home, promoted by Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with a kind contribution or Toscana Promozione, that will be presented in Italian Pavillion on occasion of the Expo Shanghai 2010. The exhibition Italian Genius Now Home Sweet Home although it remains sensible to the current topic of devastating environmental situation, has no intention to critically emphasize our unconscious behaviour towards our environment, it does not underline the ecological horrors that are destroying the balance between us and our surroundings. Art requests a different reaction and a different approach to the problem. It creates visions that inspire reflection and awarrness of mutual existence between environment and its inhabitants and their interaction. The most intimate relationship between the people and their invironment is the inhabitance. Cutting out from the environment a space, cultivate it, and make it our own, has always been a principal human need. The building activity is firmly connected to the local communities in terms of their costums and needs and to the territory in terms of the climate, landsacape and material offers. So the settlements are always a result of an interaction between humans and their surroundings. Observing the works of artists that research the topics of space, environment and architecture we are invited to imagine the diversity of development experience, new urbanistic discoveries and new approaches to building and designing a human habitat always keeping in mind the fragility of the equilibrium we have to mantain.

INTO ME / OUT OF ME Dates: November 26, 2006 - February, 2007 From November 26, 2006 through February, 2007, KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin presents Into Me / Out of Me, a group exhibition about the imagined, descriptive, and performative act of the passing into, through, and out of the human body. Curated by Klaus Biesenbach, Into Me / Out of Me is co-organized by KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, MoMA affiliate, New York. The exhibition received wide recognition when on view at P.S.1 from June 25 to September 25, 2006. Spanning over forty years and featuring an international group of artists, Into Me / Out of Me employs a wide range of media. The exhibition highlights the literal and metaphorical ways that humans interact with each other, themselves, and material matter. The focus is on three primordial and radical relationships between the internal and the external: metabolism (eating, drinking, excreting…), reproduction (intercourse, birth…), and violence (shooting, impaling, perforation…). These complex vital exchanges are illuminated through mythological confrontations, ritualized practices, and self-explorations. The physicality, permeability and fragility of the body has been explored to represent the human condition in contemporary life and art over the past forty years. The 137 international participating artists in the exhibition are Marina Abramović, Vito Acconci, Bas Jan Ader, Kenneth Anger, Janine Antoni, Nobuyoshi Araki, Knut Åsdam, Matthew Barney, Otmar Bauer, Lynda

  • Birthdays Are Important to Marina Abramović, the Performance Artist Who Was Born in Belgrade, the Capital of What Was Then Yugoslavia, on November 30, 1946
Thurman, Judith. “Walking Through Walls,” The New Yorker, March 8, 2010. Birthdays are important to Marina Abramović, the performance artist who was born in Belgrade, the capital of what was then Yugoslavia, on November 30, 1946. The body is her subject, time is her medium, and birthdays mark the moment that the performance of living officially begins. Abramović has never been shy about her age—when she turned sixty, she celebrated with a black-tie gala at the Guggenheim Museum—and age has been kinder to her than she has ever been to herself. You would recognize her today from the grainy photographs of her earliest performances, forty years ago, when she was a dark, offbeat girl with sad eyes and chiselled features in a pale face. Perhaps it was too expressive a face to be pretty—the obdurate and the yielding at odds in it. But some charismatic women, like Abramović, or her idol Maria Callas, are beautiful by an act of will. At sixty-three, Abramović radiates vitality and seduction. Her glossy hair spills over her broad shoulders. When she isn’t dressed for exercise or the stage, she is likely to be wearing designer clothes. She is fleshier than she used to be, and her body has a different kind of poignance than it did in her waifish youth, but she still has no qualms about subjecting it to shocking trials. In 2005, thirty years after she first staged “Thomas Lips” in an Austrian gallery (Thomas Lips was a Swiss lover whose androgyny had fascinated her), she revived the performance, protracted from two hours to seven, in the Guggenheim rotunda, as part of a show called “Seven Easy Pieces.” The program notes for the original read like the recipe for a banquet dish that would have pleased de Sade: I slowly eat 1 kilo of honey with a silver spoon.

  • Sex + Philosophy Curated by Christopher Eamon and Beth Stryker May 5 Through June 30, 2012
LESLIE TONKONOW Artworks + Projects ⏐535 West 22nd Street ⏐New York, New York 10011 Press Release April 10, 2012 [email protected] www.tonkonow.com Tel: 212 255 8450 Carnal Knowledge: Sex + Philosophy Curated by Christopher Eamon and Beth Stryker May 5 through June 30, 2012 Works by: Eric Baudelaire Sherrie Levine Hans Bellmer Man Ray Paolo Canevari Adrian Piper Christine Davis Anna Ostoya Agnes Denes Serkan Ozkaya Marcel Duchamp Nida Sinnokrot Sophie Calle Jindrich Styrsky Paul Chan Robert Watts fierce pussy Agnes Denes, Design of the Universe, 1971 The exhibition features contemporary and historical works of art in which sex penetrates philosophy or in which philosophy's hidden, or not so hidden, erotic metaphors are mined. Since the time of Plato, much of Western philosophy has privileged rational thought over the vicissitudes of the body. The exhibition engages with the thinking of contrarians in this long history in which passion and emotion were held subordinate to reason. Running counter to this trajectory, from Nietzsche and Schopenhauer to Bataille and Breton, philosophers and dissident writers have either attempted to invert the old hierarchies or, as in a series of imprinted drawings by Agnes Denes (the initial inspiration for this exhibition) attempted to insert the body and its amorous instruments directly into the grid-like matrix of the rational. On view are works that straddle abstraction and explicitness, from the wordplay of Marcel Duchampʼs L.H.O.O.Q to Hans Bellmerʼs graphic vintage photographic studies for Georges Bataille's Histoire de l'œil [Story of the Eye]. Other works include Paul Chanʼs placard ink drawing depicting the functional font he created from the Marquis de Sadeʼs writings (the act of typing performs a translation to the profane).
