A GUIDE TO THE MAGNOLIA STATE 2019 PUBLISHED BY Delbert Hosemann Secretary of State MISSISSIPPI Mississippi is the 20th state admitted to the Union. Nicknamed both “The Magnolia State” and “The Hospitality State,” Mississippi took its name from the Mississippi River which originates from the Indian word misi-ziibi, meaning “Great River” or “Father of Waters.” David Holmes was chosen as the first governor of the State. With a population of almost 3 million and a land mass of 48,434 square miles, Mississippi is the 32nd most extensive and the 31st most populous of the 50 states. The state’s density is 62.5 persons per square mile. Mississippi is heavily forested, with more than half of the state’s area covered by wild trees, including pine, cottonwood, elm, hickory, oak, pecan, sweetgum, and tupelo. The State of Mississippi is entirely composed of lowlands. Situated at 806 feet above sea level, the highest point is Woodall Mountain in the northeastern corner of the state at the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains. The lowest point is sea level at the Gulf Coast. The mean elevation in the state is 300 feet above sea level. For most of the year, the climate is mild, but becomes semi–tropical on the Gulf Coast. Summers are long, making it possible to grow crops from March through October. The average temperature in January is 48 degrees. The average temperature in July is 81 degrees, but more common daytime temperatures range in the 90s. The average rainfall is 52 inches and fall is the driest season.

The Senate exercises advice and consent over appointments made by the Governor. The power of impeachment is vested solely in the House; the power to try impeachment lies in the Senate. The House has the duty to elect the Governor if no candidate receives a majority of both the popular vote and the electoral vote in the general election.

CAROLYN W. 2 MEYERS ON HER 5TH ANNIVERSARY AS THE 10TH PRESIDENT OF JACKSON 3 STATE UNIVERSITY. 4 WHEREAS, Dr. Carolyn W. Meyers, a native of Newport News, 5 Virginia, mother of three adult children and grandmother of four, 6 through years of hard work in the academic and administrative 7 realms, became President of Jackson State University (JSU) in 8 2011; and 9 WHEREAS, Dr. Meyers has a tremendous vision of growth for JSU 10 and has already expanded its impact with three new campus 11 locations, increased course offerings for evening, weekend and 12 online studies, and initiated the implementation of the nation's 13 largest freshmen iPad initiative, which provided all first-year 14 students with iPads to aid their coursework; and 15 WHEREAS, as JSU expanded, Dr. Meyers had the foresight to 16 rebrand the university, opening a Veteran's Center, Office of 17 Community Affairs and Welcome Center, receiving national acclaim H. R. No. 22 *HR31/R1046.1* ~ OFFICIAL ~ N1/2 16/HR31/R1046.1 PAGE 1 18 for her campaign, which she hopes will continue until JSU lives up 19 to the ideal of the "Urban University of Mississippi"; and 20 WHEREAS, while a vision of growth has been at the forefront 21 of Dr. Meyers' strategy, the basic necessities of education has 22 not been lost as Jackson State has earned a 10-year reaffirmation 23 of accreditation in business, teacher education and engineering, 24 welcomed record-breaking enrollment in the fall of 2015 and 25 positioned the university to become a national model for educating 26 the underserved and achieving global recognition for excellence in 27 education, research and service; and 28 WHEREAS, a leader beyond measure, Dr.
