2015-12016 (6-12 grades) DRESS AND GROOMING It is the responsibility of parents or guardians to see that a student is dressed and groomed according to the standards of Trent ISD dress and grooming requirements on campus where a standard mode of dress exists, students will be required to follow that mode of dress. It is the responsibility of all school personnel to enforce the dress code. The final authorities to interpret, enforce, and permit deviations of the dress code rest with the school superintendent or principal. Students are expected to be appropriately dressed and groomed at school and at all school functions. Specific standards for appropriate dress and grooming for all Trent ISD students (grades 6th– 12) are as follows: 1. General Dress and Grooming Code: a) Articles of clothing with pictures, emblems, symbols, or writings that are lewd, offensive, vulgar, obscene, advertise, suggest, depict, or implies sexual content or inappropriate language, tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other prohibited substances are not allowed (this includes all “Joe's Crab Shack” t-shirts or girls in bikinis t-shirts as examples). b) Students must wear shoes. No beach-style flip-flops or house shoes will be allowed. All shoes must have a back or strap around the heel to keep them secure at all times. c) Hats, caps, hoods, bandannas, toboggans (Ex: any headgear with animal ears), beanies, do rags, visors, sweatbands, or sunglasses are not permitted at school. These items may be worn at other school-sponsored events as determined appropriate by the superintendent or principal. Hats, caps, hoods, bandannas, toboggans (Ex: any headgear with animal ears), beanies, do rags, visors, sweatbands, or sunglasses brought to school will be taken up for the semester. In the event of cold weather, appropriate cold weather headgear such as toboggans, beanies, or hoods are permitted at school. However, cold weather headgear such as toboggans, beanies, and hoods must be removed upon entering the school building. Toboggans and beanies must remain in the student’s coat pocket or locker during the cold weather season. d) Frayed pants or shirts are permitted with the understanding that no bare skin is to be exposed. Pants or shirts which have holes (smaller than a quarter) may be worn, unless they are patched. Garments must be hemmed or cuffed appropriately. Pants and shorts must be worn at the natural waistline. No sagging pants or garments that allow undergarments to be seen or showing are permissible. No cut-offs will be allowed. Pajamas are not permitted for school attire. Jeggings and leggings are permitted for school attire if a long shirt or dress is wore over them. The dress or shirt must come at least 3” above the knees. However, pajamas may be worn at school sponsored events (Ex. Pajamas day) as determined appropriate by the superintendent or principal. e) Athletic shorts are permitted as long as they are to the knee in length. f) Undergarments must be appropriately covered by a student’s clothing. All junior high and high school girls will wear foundation garments and underwear. All appropriate undergarments should be worn but not seen. g) Inappropriate appearance is not acceptable. Clothes should fit and be worn appropriately; therefore, no sagging pants or oversized clothing will be permitted. Pants should be worn at the waist, and shirts should be buttoned. Cardigan sweaters, pullover sweaters and sweatshirts may be worn outside of pants or skirts. The decision on whether a style is appropriate will be at the discretion of the superintendent or principal. h) Tattoos must be covered at all times while on school property or on a school related activity. i) All shirts must have sleeves in them. No sleeveless shirts are allowed. Sleeves must cover the shoulder. j) Unusual or non-traditional jewelry will not be permitted. This includes but is not limited to heavy chains, spikes, and chokers. k) Chains on wallets will not be allowed for safety purposes. l) No piercings. 2. Girls' Dress and Grooming Code: a) Girls will not wear halters, tank tops, tops that expose any part of the midriff, low-cut dresses/tops, short-shorts, spaghetti strap shirts or excessively tight clothing. All shirts must have sleeves. The neck opening on any type of dress, shirt, or blouse may not exceed the equivalent of the second button bellow the collar or neckline. There shall be no bare back, shoulder, or chest exposed. Appropriate undershirts must be worn under these types of clothing in addition to sheer, lace and see-through tops. This includes all school functions and activities. b) Hair must not be rolled, tied in a scarf, or covered by a hat, bandanna, or cap. Hair must not be dyed to extremes and haircuts which are unusual or bizarre will not be allowed. Hair should be limited to natural hair colors. Bangs must be no longer than eyebrow length unless they are pulled back and secured in place. c) Girls must wear bras or appropriate undergarments for their age. d) Pierced earrings may be worn on the ear(s) only. All other body piercing jewelry is prohibited. Piercings in the ears must be of a nature or amount that is not distracting to the educational environment. e) No gauges or spacers. f) Skirts, dresses, and shorts must extend to the knee regardless of panty hose, leggings, or jeggings. When wearing skirts or dresses, girls must have a slip or shorts underneath. g) Cheerleaders are permitted to wear their cheerleading outfits during the school day, pep-rallies or school sponsored events as determined appropriate by the superintendent or principal. Tights or leggings must be worn under cheerleading skirts during the school day. Tops must also follow the dress code. h) No bells are to be worn on shoes or skirts. All cheerleaders must be identical in their attire. 3. Boys' Dress and Grooming Code a) Boys must wear shirts with sleeves. The neck opening on any type of shirt may not exceed the equivalent of the second button bellow the collar. b) Boys' haircuts must be neat and in good taste. Hair may not be dyed to extremes and haircuts which are unusual or bizarre will not be allowed. Hair should be limited to natural hair colors. For example, ponytails, Mohawks, Faux Hawks/Fohawks haircuts, or design cuts in the hair will not be permitted. Hair cannot extend past the collar. Mustaches, beards, or go-tees are not acceptable. Sideburns should not be below the earlobe. Boys must shave and not have visible growth. c) No earrings or body piercings will be allowed at any school function. d) Boys' hair shall not be covered by a cap, hat, hood, visor, or tied up at any time. e) Shorts must extend to the knee. 4. At all banquets and school activities, students will be dressed appropriately including clean and presentable clothing according to the above dress code. Students who do not comply with the above dress code will be turned away at the door. This policy also applies to Graduation ceremonies. 5. Dress and grooming code violation Procedures: Students will be required to change into appropriate school attire and will endure the following consequences: st 1 offense-Warning nd 2 offense-3 days of Detention (breakfast, lunch, or after rd school) 3 offense- 1 day of ISS a) The student will be given a change of clothing, inappropriate shirts will be turned inside-out, and the parent/guardian notified or: b) Parents/guardians will be notified and requested to bring the appropriate apparel to school. If parents cannot come with a change of clothes, the student will be asked to change into clothing provided by the school. Students may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day or until the problem is solved. Students will not be allowed to leave school to change clothes. If the student refuses to comply with the dress code, this will serve as act of insubordination and will be dealt with accordingly. c) Baggy pants will be secured with appropriate materials such as a zip-tie or soft rope. d) Inappropriate body piercing(s) will be taken up by the school’s administration. e) Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action. Appropriate discipline action shall be followed in all cases in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Absences incurred due to inappropriate dress will be considered unexcused. f) Facial hair and male students: Students will be clean-shaven at the beginning of the school day-meaning when students arrive at school. In the event of a facial hair grooming violation, the male student will be provided a razor and shaving cream to shave. If the male student refuses to shave, this will serve as an act of insubordination and will be dealt with accordingly. 6. PE classes: Students must bring shoes, shorts, and shirts outlined in the dress Th th code. Student-athletes in grades 6 - 12 are provided outfits by the school. Student-athletes shall wear them only during PE/athletic class. 7. Graduation Dress Code: The final authority to interpret, enforce, and permit deviations of the dress code rest with the school superintendent or principal for graduation. a) The following items will NOT be allowed for graduating seniors: • Jeans • Shorts • Flip-flops of any type • Tennis shoes • Gum or candy • Displayed tattoos • For young ladies, pierced earrings may be worn on the ear (s) only. All other body piercing jewelry is prohibited. Piercings in the ears must be of a nature or amount that is not distracting to the educational environment. • For young men, no earrings or body piercings will be allowed at graduation.
