Wildlife Conservation In a world suffering from increased overcrowding and daily generating more urgent needs, modern life and technical progress are ruthlessly destroying the natural equilibrium. As a result of improved communications and ease of travel, man can now penetrate areas that were once naturally protected by their remoteness and isolation. Because of the impact of these increased human activities, nature and wildlife arc now subject to ever growing pres-sures. They can be tolerated only if the official game laws are complemented by a moral code, based on a genuine concern for the conservation of all forms of wildlife and Nature as a whole The laws, rules and principles that govern hunting must be based on practices that are ethically accepted and appreciated. Before taking part in hunting activities man must acknowledge and abide by his responsibilities. He must become thoroughly acquainted with the customs and ideals of the true sportsman He must accept the fact that he is an active custodian of Nature, and that it is his duty to maintain a satisfactory biological equilibrium. All this calls for strict personal discipline. The International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) hereby solemnly reaf-firms the fundamental principles, which define hunting as being the efficient and sympathe-tic utilization of natural resources. Our wildlife constitutes a form of investment that must be preserved and handed down intact to future generations. Only stock which is clearly sur-plus to breeding requirements should be considered as available for harvesting. Hunting was originally carried out to satisfy material needs. But today it can only be justified as part of an overall plan for wise land use and scientific conservation Careful man-agement and considerate control are man's inescapable responsibility. When all the issues are properly understood and the principles followed, hunting can pro-vide substantial benefits-moral as well as material Undertaken in the right spirit, it creates friendship of an international nature and forms bonds between those who share a common ideal. The International Council for Came and Wildlife Conservation pledges itself to the task of promoting worldwide in the spirit of these Principles. Membership of the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation automatically accepts the obligation of subscribing to these Principles and of enforcing them. It is a formal duty to publicise them and to set an example. In consequence, therefore, the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation shall bring its full weight to bear in order to oppose all acts contrary to its conscience, as well as to any act -the effect of which might interfere with the conservation of Nature in any degree whatsoever.
