DRAINAGE AREA.--113 mi2. PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1939 to current year. REVISED RECORDS.--WSP 1316: 1943(M). WSP 1446: 1946(M). WDR-WA-72-1: 1945(M). GAGE.--Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 301.1 ft above NGVD of 1929 (river-profile survey). Prior to Oct. 1, 1961, nonrecording gage and crest-stage gage at site 50 ft upstream at datum 1 ft higher. Oct 1, 1961 to Sept. 15, 1995, water-stage recorder at site 150 ft upstream at datum 1 ft higher. Prior to Feb. 24, 1999, at same site at datum 1 ft higher. REMARKS.--Records good except for estimated daily discharges, which are fair. No regulation or diversion upstream from station. Chemical analyses July 1959 to September 1970, sedment records October 1961 to December 1964 (partial-record station). AVERAGE DISCHARGE.--66 years (water years 1940-2005), 571 ft3/s, 68.65 in/yr, 413,600 acre-ft/yr. EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD.--Maximum discharge, 28,900 ft3/s, Feb. 8, 1996, gage height, 20.37 ft, from rating curve extended above 8,000 ft3/s, on basis of slope-area measurement at gage height 18.36 ft; minimum discharge, 16 ft3/s, Aug. 31, Sept. 3, 4, 7, 8, 1992.     Supplement Section III — Basin Description Information Base Part A — Basin Description The Chehalis River Basin is the largest river basin in western Washington. With the exception of the Columbia River basin, it is the largest in the state. The basin extends over eight counties. It encompasses large portions of Grays Harbor, Lewis, and Thurston counties, and smaller parts of Mason, Pacific, Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, and Jefferson counties. For purposes of water resources planning under the Washington State Watershed Planning Act of 1998, the Chehalis Basin was divided into two Water Resource Inventory Areas (WRIAs), WRIA 22 and WRIA 23, depicted here with surrounding WRIA numbers and in relation to the whole state of Washington. Elevations vary from sea level at Grays Harbor to the 5,054-foot Capitol Peak in the Olympic National Forest. The basin consists of approximately 2,766 square miles. The Chehalis WRIA 22 River system flows through three distinct eco-regions before emptying into Grays Harbor near Aberdeen (Omernik, 1987): • The Cascade ecoregion (including the Olympic Mountains) is char- acterized by volcanic/sedimentary bedrock formations.

PORT ANGELES, WA –Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) & The Olympic Forest Collaborative head in to 2019 with an impressive string of successful projects increasing timber harvest and aquatic restoration on Olympic National Forest. A series of public meetings in 2019 are planned to obtain community input on future projects. “Growing up in Port Angeles, I know that actively managing our federal forests is essential to supporting quality jobs in the timber industry, protecting our environment, and growing our outdoor economy,” said U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA06) who represents the Olympic Peninsula. “That’s why we embarked on this project to bring together regional leaders to develop innovative approaches to restoring our forests and promoting increased harvest levels. The recent successes achieved by the Olympic Forest Collaborative show that we don’t have to choose between protecting our environment and creating a more vibrant economy.” Over the last three years, the Olympic Forest Collaborative has worked across the Olympic Peninsula assisting the U. S. LAND AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PLAN for the OLYMPIC NATIONAL FOREST PACIFIC NORTHWEST REGION PREFACE Preparation of a Land and Resource Management Plan (Forest Plan) for the Olympic National Forest is required by the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act (RPA) as amended by the National Forest Management Act (NFMA). Regulations developed under the RPA establish a process for developing, adopting, and revising land and resource Plans for the National Forest System (36 CFR 219). The Plan has also been developed in accordance with regulations (40 CFR 1500) for implementing the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA). Because this Plan is considered a major Federal action significantly affecting the quality of the human environment, a detailed statement (environmental impact statement) has been prepared as required by NEPA. The Forest Plan represents the implementation of the Preferred Alternative as identified in the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the Forest Plan. If any particular provision of this Forest Plan, or application of the action to any person or circumstances is found to be invalid, the remainder of this Forest Plan and the application of that provision to other persons or circumstances shall not be affected.     Ecological Regions: Olympic Mountains Ecological Region 5.8 Olympic Mountains Ecological Region 5.8.1 Overview The Olympic Mountains Ecological Region encompasses the northern part of the Chehalis Basin, including the Satsop and Wynoochee rivers and their tributaries (Figure 5-15). This region encompasses 496 square miles (greater than 317,000 acres) and represents approximately 18% of the overall Chehalis Basin. The Satsop and Wynoochee rivers arise in the Olympic Mountains.     Development of escapement goals for Grays Harbor fall Chinook using spawner-recruit models May 2014 Quinault Department of Natural Resources (QDNR) Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Abstract Grays Harbor fall Chinook are currently managed for a system-total escapement goal of 14,600 naturally spawning adults (Chehalis: 12,364, Humptulips: 2,236), a goal established in 1979 based on estimates of total accessible spawning habitat and spawning habitat capacity for individual streams in the Grays Harbor Basin. Grays Harbor escapement goals have received additional attention since this capacity-based goal was developed, most recently by QDNR and WDFW in 2007 (a joint effort) and between 1999 and 2003 by the Chinook Technical Committee (CTC) of the Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC) and its Washington members. To develop an escapement goal for common use in the CTC’s review of indicator stock performance and by the Grays Harbor co-managers (QDNR and WDFW) in management, QDNR and WDFW recently conducted stock-recruitment analyses for Grays Harbor fall Chinook using updated escapement, terminal run reconstruction, and ocean abundance datasets. Goals were developed separately for each main tributary (Chehalis, Humptulips) and summed to generate an aggregate goal for the CTC Grays Harbor fall Chinook escapement indicator stock. Of three spawner-recruit functions considered (Shepherd, Beverton-Holt, Ricker), the Ricker model was identified as being the most appropriate form for both the Chehalis and Humptulips datasets. Parameter estimates indicate that the adult spawning escapement needed to produce maximum sustained yield (mean Smsy) for the Grays Harbor fall Chinook indicator stock aggregate is 13,326 (age 3+ individuals); Smsy is 9,753 for the Chehalis River and 3,573 for the Humptulips River.
