2 | messenger www.bolton-le-sands.org.uk Dear All What is our rock, our anchor, our security in life? So much of the time it is money, and when we find ourselves short and unable to meet our needs we can feel insecure in destructive ways, so many marriages and relationships hit the rocks over different attitudes to money. Yes, the best things in life are free; but the second-best things in life are usually unaffordable. Having enough money can become our goal and our bench mark; it can become the thing that grounds us in life. It gives the illusion that all would be well in life if we just had a bit more, but no one looks back on their life thinking, “I wish I’d spent more time at the office.”

If our security in life is financial and our insecurity also financial, then maybe money has become a false idol, a thing that replaces God at our centre and is destructive to our lives. The Bible warns us against this, over and over again, “The love of money is the root of all evil”, “no one can serve two masters, God and money” and “all things come from you and of your own do we give you.” It is very good advice for the age of austerity.

The main reason that Jesus asks us to give generously is because it is good for our souls – give away an amount that if it were given back to us then it would make a material difference to our lives; this was his challenge to both the worried, young, rich man and the poor widow. Quite simply, generous giving protects us from money becoming too powerful and allows our own place of security to move from things earthly to things eternal.

And we receive even more benefits from giving when our giving is in response to God’s generosity; only stop giving when Jesus stops giving to us. He doesn’t, ever.

Harvest is about asking God to inspire us with his generosity. Giving away so much that it makes a difference to us, that it releases space in us, grace in us, so we can receive God’s generous gifts and have our lives transformed. Holy Trinity has a £22,000 hole that is filled with prayer, not money, not yet, which makes it the proper recipient of giving done in grace, but the need of the church is not the main reason to give to it. Give because God gives to us in abundance.

Happy Harvest. Nancy Canon Peter Goodrich

On Sunday 23rd September we welcomed Canon Peter Goodrich to preside at our 10.30am service in celebration of the 50th anniversary of his ordination. He served in Walton, Prescot, Anfield, Crosby, where he was also Rural Dean, then in Upholland and Halsall, all in Liverpool Diocese. He was made a Canon in 1989, and was Diocesan director for Ordained Local DIOCESE OF Ministry for eight years until he retired in 2002. Canon Goodrich is married to BLACKBURN Margaret and has two sons ,Nigel and Julian, and two grandchildren, Florence and Lily. Julian’s wife Michelle is a reader in the Chesire Dioscese and she is about to start her training for ordantion as a priest.

This means that both of Canon Goodrich’s sons will be married to vicars! www.bolton-le-sands.org.uk messenger | 3 Holy Trinity and St. Mark’s Harvest Appeal 2013

4 | messenger www.bolton-le-sands.co.uk The Parochial Church Council Our most recent PCC meeting was held on Tuesday 10th September. Whilst there were a number of absent members due to other commitments, we had a lively meeting and covered a lot of ground, so here are some of the key areas covered :

Brian James presented an update on the Heritage Lottery Fund application and confirmed that initial submission was due to take place by the end of August. The application, if successful, will enable Holy Trinity to proceed with reroofing including the tower leadwork repairs, and also renovation work to the porch. There has been significant delays with the application so far which is predominantly due to the emergency repair work required following the substantial theft of lead from the roof in May this year. The small team responsible for the application has been very thorough in the background work required for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and the time afforded so far has been very extensive, for which we are all very grateful.

Simon Wilson, our Treasurer, had prepared an update of the rather worrying financial situation as it highlighted a shortfall in church income of approximately £12,000 which will be needed before the end of December in order to pay our Parish Share. The PCC now has a group dedicated to Financial Communication and there will be activities to report to the community in the coming weeks to identify areas in which we can all help. It will not just be directed at the congregation in church though as we are the Parish church, the whole community should be invited to become involved.

Meanwhile, if anybody reading this wishes to set up a regular standing order to Holy Trinity, the Sort Code is 01 01 60 and the Bank Account number is 94801703, in the name of Parochial Church Council of Bolton-le-Sands, Holy Trinity Church. It only has be done once and you don’t need to worry about having to find cash for the collection plate each week ! Please don’t forget to complete a Gift Aid form too so that an extra 25% can be claimed from the Government as we are a registered charity. The forms are available from the back of church or from our Gift Aid Officer,Alan Thompson. Thank you.

There will soon be a need to open the new Garden of Remembrance, which has already been consecrated so background work is taking place regarding these plans.

Adele Wilkinson, our Under 18’s Co-ordinator explained that there would be a promotion within Bolton-le-Sands School to encourage new young people to try the 3 groups we have on offer within Holy Trinity. They can meet new and old friends, have lots of fun and then join the rest of the congregation for part of the Sunday morning church service if they want to. All the contact details are listed in the Church Staff Directory in each copy of The Messenger.

Reverend Nancy Goodrich has been approached by the Community Payback Scheme in order for a team of workers to work on the garden maintenance issues within the church grounds. They will be involved in cutting back ivy, tidying overgrown areas, hedge trimming, rotivating and seeding etc which will greatly improve the whole aspect. They will be working within the grounds for 3 weeks at no cost to the church, as they are paying back into the community following their wrong doings.

The next PCC meeting is planned for Tuesday 12th November 2013.

www.bolton-le-sands.co.uk messenger | 9 Dear friends

This year seems to have been a year of catching up with friends and family for John and myself, some of whom we haven’t seen for a long time. At the funeral of my Aunt we met up with friends of the family and distant cousins who we hadn’t seen for 20 years when we were last all together at my mum’s funeral.

More recently, at the Ruby Wedding celebrations of a childhood friend and her husband, I met a woman who I last saw in the 1960s but who has always been known in our family as ‘the girl who fell down the steps’. The reason for this being that we have some old ciné film taken by my dad of the children from our street all setting off for Sunday School and she is featured slipping from top to bottom of the steps as she leaves the house of my friend who is now celebrating her Ruby wedding! I had to tell her that we have watched the film often but always enjoy it more when we run it backwards and she falls ‘up’ the steps! What a great time we had reminiscing about those days!

I heard on the news that the average teenager has something like 250 ‘friends’ on Facebook ! There is a very different concept of friends and friendship now with Facebook and social media! Will those Facebook friendships still be strong in 20 years time? I hope that they will. Friends can be made at any time of life and in any place or situation and sometimes as we get older the friendships that spring up surprise us but it is, perhaps, those friendships that were forged as children that run the deepest. Those people know us through and through and we feel comfortable and at home with them. True friends are a real blessing – where would we be without them? But how often do we show our appreciation?

As we left our friends’ Ruby Wedding celebrations we hugged and she whispered in my ear much to my astonishment – ‘I love you’. I found myself replying ‘I love you too’. It was a good feeling to know that after all these years we are as close now as we were when we were children.

A favourite hymn of many people is ‘What a friend we have in Jesus’. He is THE true friend who will never let us down. Show your appreciation of him today – tell him that you love him.

With best wishes,

Yolande

10 | messenger www.bolton-le-sands.co.uk Old Boys’ School This poem was written by Mr. John Pratt in 1937 and entered by his nephews John and William Towers in a school competition to celebrate the 300th Anniversary. It won, and was spoken by Kenneth Townson at the ceremony. At that time, Mrs. Sarah A. Garth was the headmistress of Bolton-le-Sands Free Grammar School for boys.

Our School. Upon the shores of Morecambe Bay, Throughout the years our school has stood, Where rolling tide meets golden sands, Through wars that we could ill afford. Where breezes blow from off the brine, Proving to all the world around Midst hills and sea our village stands, The pen is mightier than the sword. And there within its centre is the school Its ancient beams speak of strength and grace Where day by day we learn the Golden Rule. May we in life, like them, just fill our place.

Three hundred years ago ‘twas built. Some of its scholars have been great, When Charles the First was on the throne. And some have reached the heights of fame, ‘Twas built for sons of gentlemen, Whilst some have filled a lesser place And yet we claim the school our own. They all have tried to play the game. For gentlemen the higher pathway plod And some have died out across the sea True to their duty, conscience and their God. Whilst others toiled at home to make men free.

So may we live and credit bring To the our school we love so well. May we be pure in life and lip And by them e’er the critic quell. And may we strive to be the best we can For we are still the father to the man. Once again the “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” has arrived and what a fruitful year it is. The lovely, long, warm summer has resulted in a bounteous crop of apples, plums and damsons with hedgerows and woods full of blackberries, rowan and elderberries and all kinds of nuts. Even my neighbour’s vines have produced ripe bunches of grapes for the first time – but I fear there may be a lot of tipsy birds in the neighbourhood after sampling them!

Over the last few weeks the local farmers have been busy trundling backwards and forwards on their tractors through the village until late at night, gathering in their hay and crops and now we are all looking forward to celebrating the Harvest at St Marks. By the time you read this we will have held our Songs of Praise on the 29th September and as that day was also “Back to Church” day we hope our little church was full because everyone had invited someone to join us in our celebrations. 12 | messenger www.bolton-le-sands.org.uk Monsignor Michael Tully, who has retired to live in the recently converted presbytery, was ordained on June 8th 1963 and will celebrate his “Golden Jubilee” at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday 27th October. He will be supported by members of his family and by many friends from the parishes he has served. It is also rumoured that at least two bishops will join him on the Altar. We expect that the church will be full to overflowing on that day!

One of our young parishioners, Harry Rowlands, is going to Mexico next Easter as a member of the “Urban Saints Group” of Hest Bank. The Group has volunteered to work on a house building project for homeless families on the Mexican Border and is organising a fund raising tea party on Sunday 6th October at the Hest Bank Memorial Hall from 2 to 4 pm. Your support for this Group will be very welcome. Formerly known as Crusaders, Urban Saints has been reaching out to children and young people with the good news of Jesus Christ by resourcing and supporting churches and volunteer youth groups. Future Events: • Saturday 5th October: Quaker Ecumenical Meeting. • Saturday 12th October: The Catholic Womens League are organising their annual Barn Dance in the Parish Hall. – Great fun; easy to join in the dances, supper included – tickets available from CWL members. • Saturday 2nd November (Feast of All Souls): Parish Day of Recollection at Hyning Hall Monastery, Warton. This will provide an opportunity for quiet prayer and reflection, with the theme of forgiveness, penance and reconciliation. It will be led by the Bernadine-Cistercian Sisters. All are welcome to attend but please tell Canon Gibson if you intend to come (there will be a small charge of £10 if you bring your own lunch or £15 if you wish to have lunch provided).

Our beautiful church is open for you to visit on most days. The East window alone makes a visit well worthwhile. Best seen in the morning, it shows five elements of the life of Our Lady; as a child working in the temple, the annunciation, on the flight into Egypt, having a meal after reaching Egypt and , at the top, as Queen with her child.

The Parish Hall is currently used for social activities which will be listed in future editions as well as dancing classes and badminton evenings. There are periods when it is available for hire Contact Mrs R Smyth 01524823747

Pat Fuller and Eddie Hignett www.bolton-le-sands.co.uk messenger | 13 Bolton-le-Sands WI I have to report on two WI meetings, one on 13 August, which I admit I did not attend as I was on `grandma duty`, a duty many of you will be familiar with. However, I know the meeting was a success as we were entertained by our own Entertainment Group who staged a presentation entitled “Memories of our School Days” with sketches, archive recordings and photographs.

On 10 September our President, Hazel Short was delighted at the large number of people present, some members, some guests and some would-be members. We do seem to be attracting more people each month.

Forthcoming events include the County Show 25th/26th September, we have lots of entries this year and we hope a lot of members will attend. The Autumn Council meeting will be in Bolton on 10th October and we have our own AGM on 12th November. New members for the Committee are always welcome. We are off to White Christmas at Tatton Park on 4th December - this should be a really lovely trip. We continue with our Walking Group and Jean Bayliss always reports back on these events in such a funny way you feel you have walked with her. We were happy to sing Happy Birthday to Dorothy Nelson who will be 90 later this month - congratulations Dorothy.

We have some very good speakers, entertainers and interesting people at our meetings, but Tuesday night proved to be especially good. We were entertained by Jacqueline McDonald and her friend Lyn. Jacqueline started her career with `The Spinners` and later joined her friend Bridie to form a duo singing folk songs and general all round entertainment. She took us on a journey from Liverpool with the `Liverpool Lullaby`, almost around the world in song, including Birkenhead!! She sang and joked, made us all feel happy and encouraged us to join in and sing. The vote of thanks was given by Jackie Ireland and she, like me, ran out of good things to say, but a big thank you to Jacqueline, she inspired us all and we went home feeling uplifted. A reminder that the next walk will be on 13th November and that we still have Knit and Natter at the Blue Anchor on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.

Marian.

Quiet day at Hyning Hall There will be a Quiet Day at Hyning Hall on Thursday October 10th from 10.00am to 4.00pm. The cost will be £15 for the set meal, and £10 for those bringing a packed lunch. This is because many of us, including Gaynor and I have been away on holiday and getting together for practice would have been tricky. However, on October 2nd at 7pm. we shall have our first practice of the autumn season. We would be delighted to welcome new members, especially those who can sing bass or tenor, on that occasion. No experience is needed, just a willingness to sing and an ability to enjoy the experience whilst at the same time praising God. What could be a better way of spending time? We shall begin to prepare for Christmas, which doesn’t mean that we shall be singing Chistmas carols from the outset, but that hopefully some new and enjoyable Christmas music will be introduced. Please feel free to come and join us. You may remember that we try to sing at the first 10.30 service of each month and also at high days and Holy Days. God bless

Luke was a native of the Hellenistic city of Antioch in Syria. The early church fathers ascribed to him authorship of both the Gospel according to Luke and the book of Acts of the Apostles, which originally formed a single literary work. Such authorship was later reaffirmed by prominent figures in early Christianity such asJerome and Eusebius, although within scholarly circles, both secular and religious, discussions have been held due to the lack of evidence as to the real identity of the author of the works.

In the New Testament, Luke is mentioned briefly a few times, and referred to as a doctor Wright & Lord Solicitors in Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians; thus he is thought to have been both a physician and 63 Victoria Street Morecambe Lancashire LA4 4AF a disciple of Paul. Considered by early Christians as a saint, he is believed to have died a 53 Princes Crescent Bare Morecambe Lancashire LA4 4BY martyr, although accounts of the events do vary. 37 Beetham Road Milnthorpe Cumbria LA7 7QN He is venerated as Saint Luke the Evangelist and is Patron Saint of artists, physicians, T: (01524) 402050 F: (01524) 402051 surgeons, students and butchers; his feast day is 18th October. Authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA Nos. 00333083 and 00403957) Bolton-le-Sands CE Primary School We now have a BLS School blogsite! This is really exciting and the children and staff are really keen to fully engage with blogging as a means to: • raise standards in writing • promote parental partnership and engagement • share our ideas on a national / international basis • celebrate successes in school

Each class has their own blog and there are also blogs for sport, music, ‘Loaves and Fishes’ and Mr Cross.

The site is still being developed but there is already a lot to read and to comment on. Please do log on at http://blsblog.net and leave some comments on the pages - we would love to hear from you!

Harvest Festival at Holy Trinity This year’s parish Harvest Festival Service will be held at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday 6th October at 10.30am. As usual, the children from the school will be taking leading parts in this service and Miss Gibson will be co-ordinating our contribution. The school’s ‘Loaves and Fishes’ group have already started meeting at Church, and will be sharing their learning with the congregation at this service.

The school will also be holding its own Harvest Service in Holy Trinity at 9.00am on Monday 7th October. Members of the parish are welcome to come and join us for this special celebration.

Musical instrument request ... We are really keen to continue to improve the provision we make for instrumental learning in school. We have welcomed two new young music teachers from Lancashire Music Service and we are hoping to really raise the profile of music education even higher. To this end we have a request:

If any of you have any unwanted musical instruments at home that are gathering dust, would you please consider donating them to school?

We would gladly accept any donation as long as the instrument is playable or easily repairable. If you have an instrument or would like to chat more, please contact Mrs Griffith.

Thank you so much

22 | messenger www.bolton-le-sands.co.uk 2nd Bolton le Sands Scouts : Inglebrough Hike

September 13, a new term and our first Scout activity, Ingleborough, 3rd attempt. If we didn`t make it this time, another fell was going to get it, as we can’t be in favour with Yorkshire and the Dales!!

The day looked really promising, warm with a couple of clouds, kit checking done we drove back to the white rose county to the tunes of Motorhead, Tiffany(?) and One Direction bouncing round the inside of the car! Following the same route as fail 1 and with those delightful tunes still ringing in the ears we made good progress to a very busy summit; the weather being perfect, plenty of others had the same idea of a hike.

The Scouts had finally made it, although the preceding fails do teach a good lesson, are they really fails at all? Not really, the scouts learned you can’t win them all, a pity one of the tunes bouncing round the car wasn’t ‘The Gambler’ by Kenny Rogers. “You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, Know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away, know when to run”. Of course in our modern day, a good old sing along to One Direction also does the trick.

26 | messenger Introducing .... The Social Group

This is a ‘not-for-profit club’ for people who share an interest in enjoyable days out with friends to places of interest. We go by coach on alternate Wednesdays throughout the year. This is a sub-branch of the Morecambe and District HF Rambling Club, which was set up so that those who were no longer able to walk longer distances could remain in touch with friends and enjoy a good day out. Walking is limited to towns and cities, and around the various attractions.

The coach leaves Towers at 9.00am, and has various pick up points through Morecambe and Torrisholme before picking up in Slyne (Manor Road/A6 bus stop) Bolton-le- Sands (Ricky’s and The Royal Hotel) and Carnforth (Burch Tree Vets). The cost for members is £8 per trip, plus any admission charges to attractions. Non-members pay a £1 surcharge, and children are charged £4. We give the driver a ‘group gratuity’ so that individual members do not have to do so. Visits to most attractions are optional, but we do benefit from reduced booking rates. Our September excursions included a visit to Pontcysyllte Viaduct and Llangollen, which was a longer day, starting at 8.00am.

Membership costs £5 a year, so it is worth joining if you think you will join us more than 5 times in a year, but you are welcome to come as a visitor to try us out. Many people like to come with a friend, and over the years, many members have formed new friendships. Booking : Members get preference, so we can only accept bookings from visitors 7 days before the excursion; before that time, you can be put on a waiting list and you will be contacted to confirm your place. We do no book numbered seats - it is a case of ‘first come, first seated’ - the front seats being reserved for the organisers. You will receive a detailed plan for the excursion when you book, and you pay on the coach before the end of the outing. Excursion planned for October:

9th October - Thorp Perrow Arboretum & Falconry Centre, Bedale. • Thorpe Perrow is an Arboretum, woodland garden, mammal & falconry centre in north Yorkshire. It has a tearoom but you might prefer to picnic in the gardens. With luck there will be splendid autumn colours to enjoy. There are falconry flying displays at 13.30 and 15.30. We should arrive in Carnforth at about 19.00. We will then drop off in reverse pick- up route order ie from Carnforth to Heysham.

23rd October - Knaresborough and Harrogate. • Knaresborough is an attractive market town mainly on the south side of the gorge through which the River Nidd flows. On a fine day it is recommended that you walk by the side of the castle, through Bebra Park to view the Victorian railway viaduct which crosses the Nidd, downhill to the riverside walk where there are several cafes & restaurants. It’s about three quarters of a mile and fairly steep so we will arrange for the coach to pick us up from the car park by the river. The footpath through the Castle Gardens is very steep in places and best avoided. An easy alternative is to walk from Conygham Coach Park along the riverside walk towards the viaduct and back. Alternatively, visit the market or follow the Painted Windows Trail or visit the open air market. We will leave Harrogate at 17.00, and we should arrive in Carnforth at about 1915.

To make a booking, or for further enquiries about the group, please contact Adrian Speller - telephone (01524) 824652. www.bolton-le-sands.co.uk messenger | 27 Trees Felled & Chipped Hedges Laid & Trimmed
