  • The Fourth Dorset Section Virtual Club Night
Hello again, I hope everyone is keeping well and surviving the enforced idleness at home, when we’d all rather be out on our bikes and meeting up with friends. Some excellent contributions to keep you entertained and I’m grateful to everybody that has found the time to send in material; keep it coming- just in case! Just to help remind us why we’re not able to meet in person, here’s a picture of Marie, whose knitted a window rainbow in support of our incredible NHS. Not sure about the dodgy bloke lurking behind her, mind you! I think that rainbow needs to be attached to a bike or two on our runs over the coming months. Stay safe everybody and see you all again soon. Paul Miles- chairperson. First up, our very own pocket rocket, Betsy Barber, remembers her trip to Land’s End (down the road from where my mother was born and now a ‘visitor experience’ complete with waxwork models of Poldark and pretend pirate; all very depressing- ed) in order to help raise funds for a hospital scanner. Three wheels on my wagon In 1991, much like today, Salisbury District hospital was running a scanner appeal. At the time I was Chairperson of the Stonehenge section with the late John Allington as vice chair. John and his wife, Daphne, had spent about ten years carrying out a ground-up restoration of a 1934 BSA three-wheeler and Daphne and I came up with the idea to raise money for the appeal by riding from Salisbury to Land’s End, encouraging donations as we went.

A monthly publication of The Vintage Motorcycle Club Johannesburg, South Africa. Volume 29. No 8. August 2015. CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE: Again we seem to bring sad news. On Friday, 10th August Peter de Klerk passed away after his prolonged illness and fight against cancer. To all of his friends, motoring colleagues and family, we want to acknowledge that the VMC has lost another motorsport stalwart and that he will be sorely missed for his knowledge, willingness to help and true dedication to motoring in general. To an issue that is a threat to the existence of our movement and to the pastime of each member. We had to cancel the running of the VMC Winter run because of a total lack of entries. The Magnum Rally is under threat of the same fate because of a lack of entries. People, we need to encourage participation in as many events as we can. If this doesn’t happen our club will not continue. We all need to encourage existing members to participate in activities, especially organised or proposed rally events – which are one of the main avenues for exposure of our club and the other like-minded clubs. Please do your utmost to attract friends, colleagues or even acquaintances so that our numbers can grow. A very important event happens at the club meeting at the end of July each year. Please make every effort to attend the VMC AGM. After all it is your club and you are responsible for the committee chosen to lead us into the coming year.

  • Notes on the Douglas Family and the Kingswood Motor Cycle Factory
Notes on the Douglas family and the Kingswood motor cycle factory From „Rough notes compiled by John Penny‟ 1930 Douglas Motorcycle Brochure On 5 October 1816, at Nenthorn in Berwickshire, which is just over three miles from Kelso in Roxboroughshire, the following marriage banns were read, “This day William Douglas and Catherine Yule both in the parish gave up their names in proclamation in order to marriage.” Although the exact details of William‟s birth around 1795 are obscure, it is known that between 1817 and 1836 the couple went on to have eleven children, and of these William (1817 to 1905) and John (1833 to 1874) later settled in Bristol. In June 1841 William Douglas senior, black smith and hardware dealer, was working in the Horsemarket, North Side, in Kelso. However in March 1851 he was described as a white smith, working at St Nicholas Church Yard, Newcastle upon Tyne. Also in 1841 William Douglas junior was living in Tynemouth, Northumberland, and it was at Newcastle upon Tyne in the summer of 1845 that he married Mary Ann Chambers, while by March 1851, and working as an engineer, he was living with his wife at Newgate Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1851 William‟s younger brother John Douglas was still living with his parents in Newcastle upon Tyne, at which time he was working as a white smith. Then, at St John‟s church in Newcastle in June 1855, he married Mary Wilson, and the couple went on to have six children of which the first two were born in Newcastle.
