459 BRIEF STUDIES and REPORTS The Perry George Lowery / Scott Joplin Connection: New Information on an Important African American Cornetist Richard I. Schwartz The author of this article has previously discussed the life and career of Perry George Lowery (1869-1942) in the Historic Brass Society .f ournal (vol. 12 [2002] : 61-88). The present article is designed to provide supplementary information about his circus career and his surprising professional association with Scott Joplin (1868-1919). It has become apparent to this author that a relationship of strong mutual respect and friendship developed between Perry George Lowery and Scott Joplin during the early twentieth century. P.G. Lowery was renowned for his abilities not only as a cornetist, but also as a conductor ofmany brass bands, consisting of the best African American band musicians in the entertainment world.' Scott Joplin's achievements are many and have been researched extensively by several authors.' One of the few articles in The Indianapolis Freeman3 documenting a friendship between Lowery and Joplin states that "P.G. Lowery, assistant manager of Swain's Nashville Students was the special guest of Scott Joplin, the ragtime king and author of the following hits: `Maple Leaf Rag,' 'Easy Winner,' Peacherine Rag,' 'Sun-flower Slowdrag,' and 'A Blizzard'." Much has been written about all of these compositions with the exception of the last one: no piece entitled A Blizzard has survived and according to Edward A. A History of Music in Old Mount Vernon, Ohio with Particular Attention to Woodward Hall and the Nineteenth-Century American Opera House

Weait School of Music ABSTRACT During the antebellum period, the town of Mount Vernon, Ohio had a flourishing music scene that included performances by both local amateur societies and professional touring groups. When Woodward Hall, located on the top floor of a four-story commercial building, opened its doors to the public in 1851, it provided the town with its first dedicated theater. Newspaper items and other early sources show that the hall was a focus of public culture in the 1850s, hosting concerts, plays, lectures, and art exhibits as well as community activities including dances, church fundraisers, and school exhibitions. The early source materials for Mount Vernon, however, like those for many small towns, are lacunary, and especially so in the case of Woodward Hall. These shortcomings are compensated, to some extent, by materials relating to theaters of similar size and age in other towns, which offer points of comparison for the Woodward and prove it to be a typical mid-nineteenth-century American theater in some respects, and a distinctive one in others. Modern-day music histories have heretofore been silent on the subject of music and opera houses in small towns despite Oscar Sonneck’s call, some ninety years ago, for local music historiography as a necessary first step in creating a complete history of American music. -

Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute. -

July 26, 2013 Bugs Bunny and the NSO come to Wolf Trap By Roger Catlin For a generation of Americans, the earliest love of classical music came not through shared family symphony experiences or early childhood music appreciation classes, but through mayhem-laced TV cartoons, often involving a bunny in drag. Walt Disney may have taken the high road to classical music interpretation through some early Silly Symphony cartoons and “Fantasia” (which in its first run was a flop). But it was Warner Bros. and particularly the animators behind Bugs Bunny who may have been the most successful in drumming key classical passages into the heads of impressionable audiences when the studio’s theatrical cartoons of the 1940s and ’50s were incessantly replayed on TV in the ’60s. Warner Bros. - Still image from the 1950's Merrie Melodies short, “What's Opera, Doc?” Even today, the most serious gray-haired music lover, sitting in the world’s most august concert halls, may be listening to the timeless refrains of Rossini or Wagner only to have the phrase “Kill the Wabbit!” come to mind. Conductor George Daugherty has embraced this meld of classical knowledge and pop-culture conditioning and celebrates it in his “Bugs Bunny at the Symphony.” Its first tour, in 1990, was such a success that it spawned, as most successes in Hollywood do, a sequel. “Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II” comes to Wolf Trap on Thursday and Friday, with Daugherty conducting the National Symphony Orchestra. In its honor, we pause to hail the greatest uses of classical music by Warner Bros. -
