Haydel Montgomery College iii INTRODUCTION: THE BEACON CONFERENCE The Beacon Conference for student scholars at two-year colleges is an annual event that began in 1993 as a grant-funded AACC/Kellogg Beacon project and is now sponsored by a coalition of junior and community colleges in the mid-Atlantic region. The primary objective of the conference is to showcase academic achievements of students on two-year college campuses. Students are invited to submit scholarly work in 18–20 subject area categories that encompass all areas of study at two-year schools, from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, to technical fields and special areas, such as computer applications and multicultural studies. Three community college faculty with expertise in a particular field read and rank the papers in each category. The authors of the top three essays in each discipline are invited to present their papers at the Beacon Conference hosted by one of the sponsoring colleges on the first Friday of June. Out of three finalists in each subject area, one winner is selected by a judge from a four-year university. Panel winners are chosen on the basis of the quality and originality of research, written work, and oral presentation. Prizes of $100 are awarded to both authors of the winning papers and their faculty mentors. In addition, the fourth-ranked students in each category are invited to present the highlights of their submissions during the Poster Session which precedes the Award Ceremony held at the conclusion of the conference day. The Beacon Conference is a great opportunity for students and faculty of two-year colleges to receive recognition for their outstanding work. The project also fosters a climate of community through (1) the collegiality that develops among colleagues working on a joint project; (2) the intense relationship that grows between students and their faculty mentors; (3) the interactions among students submitting to, presenting at, and attending the conference; (4) the connections between the two-year colleges and neighboring four-year institutions which supplied panel judges; and finally (5) the communal spirit at the conference itself. Usually, 120–170 students submit papers for the competition. The level of the papers submitted each year, the quality of the papers presented and, especially, the superiority of the winning papers illustrate that community colleges are the place for high caliber academic accomplishments. Civil Action 00-2371 (HHK) GALE NORTON, Secretary of the Interior, et al., Defendants. MEMORANDUM OPINION On May 25, 1993, Congress authorized the construction of a memorial in the District of Columbia to honor members of the Armed Forces who served during World War II and to commemorate the United States’ participation in that war. See Pub. L. 103-32, 107 Stat. 90, 91 (1993). The act empowered the American Battle Monuments Commission (“ABMC”), in connection with a newly-created World War II Memorial Advisory Board, to select a location for the WWII Memorial, develop its design, and raise private funds to support its construction. On October 25, 1994, Congress approved the location of the WWII Memorial in “Area 1” of the District, which generally encompasses the National Mall and adjacent federal land. See Pub. L. 103-422, 108 Stat. 4356 (1994). The ABMC reviewed seven potential sites within Area I and endorsed the Rainbow Pool site at the east end of the Reflecting Pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument as the final location for the WWII Memorial.1 Finally, 1 Out of the seven sites examined, the ABMC originally selected the Constitution Gardens area (between Constitution Avenue and the Rainbow Pool) as the location for the WWII Memorial, but later decided to endorse the present Rainbow Pool site. in May, 2001, Congress passed new legislation directing the expeditious construction of the WWII Memorial at the selected Rainbow Pool site.

    AMERICA AND THE MOVIES WHAT THE ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEES FOR BEST PICTURE TELL US ABOUT OURSELVES I am glad to be here, and honored. I spent some time with Ben this summer in the exotic venues of Oxford and Cambridge, but it was on the bus ride between the two where we got to share our visions and see the similarities between the two. I am excited about what is happening here at Arizona State and look forward to seeing what comes of your efforts. I’m sure you realize the opportunity you have. And it is an opportunity to study, as Karl Barth once put it, the two Bibles. One, and in many ways the most important one is the Holy Scripture, which tells us clearly of the great story of Creation, Fall, Redemption and Consummation, the story by which all stories are measured for their truth, goodness and beauty. But the second, the book of Nature, rounds out that story, and is important, too, in its own way. Nature in its broadest sense includes everything human and finite. Among so much else, it gives us the record of humanity’s attempts to understand the reality in which God has placed us, whether that humanity understands the biblical story or not. And that is why we study the great novels, short stories and films of humankind: to see how humanity understands itself and to compare that understanding to the reality we find proclaimed in the Bible. Without those stories, we would have to go through the experiences of fallen humanity to be able to sympathize with them, and we don’t want to have to do that, unless we have a screw loose somewhere in our brain.

    2020-3930-AJE 1 Incorporating Movie Clips to Validate Learning: 2 A Students’ Assessment 3 4 5 The use of movie-based educational interventions has been widely used in the 6 pedagogy of psychology. Wherein most of the researchers have included full- 7 length movies in their teaching followed by students’ comments of its 8 effectiveness; the current research was carried out to examine if or not 9 students will be able to find relevant clips from the list of movies provided and 10 incorporate those in their group workshops after being exposed to the 11 theoretical knowledge in their lecture class. To gauge how the participants 12 received it and what suggestions do they have to offer for the improvement of 13 this innovative exercise an anonymous survey and a semi open-ended interview 14 was used. The research was conducted in three trimesters of academic years 15 2018 and 2019. On analysis of the raw data, it was found that the students 16 rated the assignment favorably and reported that movie clips helped them 17 understand the course material better and enabled them to apply psychological 18 concepts to real-life situations. The site history including stream channels, canals, and materials used in filling various areas has had a large impact on the development of the Mall.
