n this past New Year’s Day, I had Oa chance to meet some of my Latin American friends again. We spoke of the many people in that region who had long entertained profound friendship for China. As observers, at close hand or far away, of the earthshaking changes of New China since its founding, they were greatly inspired by China’s rapid development on the socialist path with its own characteristics. In Particular, they hailed the grand goal of completing the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects set at the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in November 2012. Marking New Year’s Day, they sincerely congratulated the Chinese people on Premier Zhou Enlai with Latin American youth attending the activities in creating new glory in terms of peaceful celebration of the first anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of development. With the return date to Europe approaching, however, a troublesome problem emerged that the Qing government banned exports of all books. Thus, Neumann had to resort to bribing customs officials. He declared these books as “paper” and successfully brought them back to Germany. More than 2,400 out of the 6,000 volumes of books were purchased by the Prussian Royal Library in Berlin in 1832, while the remainder, over 3,500 volumes, were taken by Neumann to Munich. Instructed by King Ludwig I and through hard negotiation, the Bavarian Royal Library got the

In fact, as early as 1829, Neumann was recognized The Affections of My Life as a sinologist by the University of Munich and made a catalogue of Chinese books for the Bavarian Royal Library. However, the professorship did not diminish his passion for enlightenment and the revolution he had kept Zhang Yan in his heart since his youth. He was fired by the university due to participation in the 1848 revolution and had to move to Berlin, where he continued his studies, while engaging in publication of his own academic books until his death in 1870. The German Oriental Society, the first academic organization engaged in sinology in German history, was founded in 1842. Neumann wrote quite a few articles for the society’s journal. However, China at that time was too busy to pay any attention to such a foreign organization that focused on the study of its culture. Chinese University Students’ Impressions of Japan

Editor’s Note: At the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Japan-China Friendship Center, a 77-member del- egation of Chinese university students led by Wang Xiuyun, Vice President of the China-Japan Friendship Association, visited Tokyo, Miyagi and Kyoto from March 4 to 11, 2013. Members of the delegation consisted of students from Peking University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing International Studies Uni- versity, Beijing Language and Culture University and University of International Relations. The delegation visited a number of famous Japanese universities, had friendly exchanges with Japanese counterparts and went to the earthquake-stricken area in northeastern Japan to learn of post-quake reconstruction. After returning home, members of the delegation wrote articles about their impressions of Japan. We have selected the following two articles for our readers.

Why Do I Study Chinese

Translator’s Note: The cross language year program — the Chinese Language Year in France and the French Language Year in China — initiated by Chinese and French leaders were held in 2011 and 2012 to promote cultural exchanges and fur- ther deepen the China-France comprehensive strategic partnership. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the CPAFFC and the Federation of French-Chinese Associations (FFCA) held essay competitions respectively in China and France on the theme of My Fascination with the French Language and Why I Study Chinese, soliciting entries from China’s local people’s associations for friendship with foreign countries and various FFCA branches. Five essays from each competition were selected as prize- winners. The following are prize-winning essays selected by the FFCA.
