TONIGHT’S GAME The Flyers take on the Winnipeg Jets tonight in their 18th game of the season and 10th at home. The Flyers are 7-7-3 for 17 points after a 3-2 shootout loss to the on Tuesday night. This is the third game in a four game homestand for the Flyers and the fifth of nine home games the Flyers play in the month of November. Their only travel the rest of the month is a two-game trip to Florida next week for the two days before Thanksgiving. Saturday, November 7 – Flyers 3, Winnipeg 0 at MTS Centre: The Flyers ended a seven-game power play drought with two PPG and Michael Neuvirth made 28 saves for his third shutout of the season as the Flyers snapped a six-game winless streak with a 3-0 victory in Winnipeg. Brayden Schenn recorded the first PPG at 5:54 of the first period and Wayne Simmonds picked up the second at 9:44 of the third period, both off assists from Claude Giroux. Matt Read wrapped up the game with a late empty-netter. Ondrej Pavelec absorbed the loss for Winnipeg, making 19 saves. Monday, March 28 – Flyers 3, Winnipeg 2 (OT) at Wells Fargo Center: Claude Giroux scored the game-winner with 13.6 seconds remaining in to lift the Flyers past the Jets. The Flyers weren’t able to score in the first period despite controlling play much of the time, but they took care of that quickly in the second period when Mark Streit scored 41 seconds into the middle stanza. Wayne Simmonds doubled that lead about 4 ½ minutes later at the 5:10 mark, but the Jets eventually got both goals back – one from Mark Scheifele 1:18 after the Simmonds tally and the other from Blake Wheeler 2:35 into the third. As the overtime period wound down, Shayne Gostisbehere made a diving play to strip Scheifele of the puck and feed Giroux, who beat Ondrej Pavelec for the winner. Steve Mason earned the win and the game’s first star with 26 saves, while Pavelec made 29.

The Flyers have won five in a row overall against Winnipeg and have points in their last six, with the last regulation loss coming in Winnipeg on April 6, 2013. The Flyers have at least a point in 11 of the 14 games against the Jets since the move to Winnipeg, going 8- 3-3.

LAST GAME Tuesday, November 15: Ottawa 3, Flyers 2 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center – The Flyers held a one-goal lead until late in the game, but Ottawa tied it up in the final minutes and then prevailed in a shootout by a 3-2 final. The Flyers opened the scoring when Nick Cousins picked off a loose puck at the Flyers blue line and skated 110 feet a step ahead of the Senators defense to pick up an unassisted goal 5:14 into the contest. Ottawa tied it on a goal by Mark Stone 7:09 into the second period, but the Flyers regained the lead six minutes later when Michael Raffl buried the rebound of a Dale Weise from the left side. That lead held until Kyle Turris placed home a wraparound with 1:59 to play in regulation. After a scoreless overtime the goalies continued to hold court until Erik Karlsson’s fifth round goal won it for the Senators. Steve Mason stopped 24 of 26 shots for the Flyers, while Craig Anderson turned away 33 of 35. Stars of the Game: 1 –Erik Karlsson; 2 – Craig Anderson; 3 – Travis Konecny.

Toronto’s four-goal third period was the first the Flyers have allowed since December 21, 2013, when Columbus scored four goals in the third period of a 6-3 win over the Flyers at Nationwide Arena.

Michael Del Zotto and Brayden Schenn were each credited with six hits, while Radko Gudas recorded six blocked shots and Ivan Provorov had five blocks.

The Flyers were outshot by 10, the most they’ve been outshot so far this season. This is the seventh time they’ve been outshot, but previously never by more than five shots.

The Flyers have three players among the top 25 scorers in the NHL. Jake Voracek leads the Flyers in scoring with seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points, while Claude Giroux has 16 points on the year (4G, 12A) and Wayne Simmonds comes into the game with eight goals and seven assists for 15 points.

Voracek has nine points (4G, 5A) in his last nine games and has three two-point games in his last five outings. Voracek is third in the NHL with 64 shots on goal.

Giroux has picked up 10 of his 16 points on the power play, which leads the league, and his 12 overall assists place him among a handful of players two off the league lead.

Simmonds is four off the league lead in goals scored and is tied for second in power play goals (5). He is the only player in the league to have a shorthanded goal while also having more than one power play goal.

Shayne Gostisbehere is tied for fourth among NHL defensemen in shots on goal with 48. He has 10 points on the year (3G, 7A) and is one of 18 NHL defensemen who are within four points of the league lead among blueliners.

Matt Read has six goals through the first 17 games of the year. He had 11 goals in 79 games last season, and eight in 80 games two years ago.

The Flyers lead the league in shots on goal with 560 and in shots per game at 32.9. The Flyers have outshot their opponent in 13 of their 17 games this season. They are also allowing the fourth-fewest shots per game in the league at 27.2.

The Flyers are third in the NHL with 55 goals this year and are fourth in average goals per game at 3.24. At the same time, they have given up the most goals in the league (60) and have the highest goals-against per game average at 3.53.

The Flyers’ power play is operating at 27.4 percent (17 for 62), which is second best in the NHL. Tuesday night’s 0-for-4 evening snapped a five-game streak in which the team had at least one PPG.

The Flyers are 2-2 in shootouts this year. They have played four shootouts, more than any other team in the league, and are one of three teams with multiple shootout victories – Ottawa has three, while Detroit has two.

Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), comes to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockey program for 11 seasons. During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span.
