Royals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ Boston Red Sox - Friday, July 18, 2014 This & That

KC TOUGH ON CHALLENGES--Kansas City went 17-8 with its challenges during the unofficial first half, including making good on nine of its last 11 reviews... KC’s 17 replay overturns are the most among the 30 clubs...Kansas City’s opposing managers haven’t been nearly as successful, going 10-12 to date...of the 25 challenges involving Kansas City, only one has been confirmed while seven were ruled “stands.” THE LAND OF HOZ--Eric Hosmer waited until his last at bat on Sunday, but delivered a run scoring double during the 5-run seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, two more than his previous career best and establishing a team high for 2014, one more game than Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon who each hit safely in a dozen straight...this streak began on the final day of June and he is batting .412 (21-for-51) with 8 runs scored, 5 doubles, 2 homers and 8 walks for an on-base pct. of .492 and an impressive OPS during the streak of 1.119...this hitting streak has jumped Hoz’s season average 22 points to .268...this 13-game streak is the longest active in the Majors, one game better than the currently disabled Joe Mauer of the Twins. HARDLY THE HALFWAY POINT--While it’s popular to say that Sunday ended the first half of the season, the Royals are 13 games beyond the midway point... the schedule maker nailed the pre All-Star break work with Kansas City playing 47 games at home and 47 on the road, though KC has been much more effective away from “The K” with a 26-21 ledger. “ACE” GETS TO .500 FROM THE PEN--Yordano Ventura, slated to start the series finale here on Sunday, upped his season record to 7-7 with 1.2 shutout innings of work vs. the Tigers last Sunday in his first relief appearance of the year...three of the five outs he recorded last Sunday came via the strikeout. WORK WITH THE EAST--Kansas City’s best work this year has come against foes from the A.L. East, with the Royals going 14-9 with this the first work of 2014 vs. the BoSox...the Royals are 18-22 overall against A.L. Central, with the majority of that deficit occurring against the division leaders as KC has gone just 4-9 vs. Detroit...Kansas City started the year just 5-15 within the Central, but then rebounded to go 12-2 over a 14-game span to battle back to .500 vs. the Central before dropping 5 of the last 6...KC is 8-11 vs. the West and 8-4 against the National League...the Royals haven’t enjoyed a winning mark in Interleague play since the 2008 season when they went 13-5...the next National League duty will take place on August 5-7 in Arizona. SAVES CHANCES FEW AND FAR BETWEEN--Two-time All-Star, Greg Holland, hasn’t had many opportunities to ply his trade of late, getting just two save opportunities in the last 15 games and making good on each of those chances, the most recent last Sunday in the pre-break finale vs. Detroit...despite the save drought over the last two weeks, Holly is still second in the American League in rescues with 25, just two behind Fernando Rodney...a first time All-Star in 2013, Holland has made good on 65 of his last 67 (97.0%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span... since that date, Greg has two more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 62) and has allowed just 11 earned runs in 85.2 innings for a 1.16 ERA. WADING THROUGH THE OPPOSITION--Wade Davis put up All-Star worthy numbers during the unofficial first half, but couldn’t crack the roster for the contest played on Tuesday night in Minneapolis...he worked a perfect eighth inning on Sunday at home vs. the Tigers...Wade has retired the last 15 hitters he’s faced since walking the Angels’ Josh Hamilton to open the eighth inning on June 29...Davis has also retired 18 of the last 19 batters he’s faced since last allowing a run on June 25...that’s the lone run he’s surrendered in his last 29.1 innings for a 0.30 ERA in that span...he is the only pitcher in the Majors with more than 8 appearances who hasn’t allowed an extra-base hit this season...Davis now has 37 appearances and 39.2 innings...since surrendering a season-high 2 earned runs back on April 5, Wade has given up only two runs over his last 33 outings (35.1 innings) for a 0.51 ERA with opponents hitting just .102 (12-for-118) while fanning 58 for a 14.78 strikeouts per 9-inning ratio...the .102 batting average is the best in the Majors for any hurlers with at least 30.0 since April 6. BACK ON TOP IN THEFTS--The Royals have been on a bit of a run on the bases to retake the American League stolen base lead with 79, two more than second place Houston...Kansas City has pilfered 13 bags in the last 11 games without being caught, while also stealing 24 bases in its last 26 tries over the last 19 games... KC’s 80.6 stolen base success rate in first among the 17 big league clubs with at least 70 tries (79-for-98). A TOP RATED THIEF--Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar has been one of the most successful base thieves in baseball over the past three seasons and enters tonight fourth in the American League with 22 thefts, the first Royals to pilfer at least 20 bags in four consecutive seasons since Willie Wilson did it over 13 straight campaigns from 1978-90...not only is Esky once again among the top thieves in the league, he’s been the most successful in the Major Leagues over the past three seasons, successfully stealing at a 91.9% clip (79-for-86) since the start of 2012, which is the highest among all thieves with at least 40 attempts...he’s been thrown out just twice in his last 52 attempts. NED THIRD ON KC WIN LIST--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, Ned Yost has a 332-383 record since he was named to his position on May 13, 2010, passing Tony Muser for sole possession of third on KC’s all-time wins list...he is 72 wins behind Royals Hall of Famer Dick Howser (404), for second in club history...Yost, who managed six seasons in Milwaukee (2003-08), is 789-878 all-time as a Major League skipper, good for 76th all-time, 8 wins shy of Johnny Oates in the #75 spot.
