Many of those tracing their ancestors in Glamorgan will therefore sooner or later come across family members who were coal miners or colliery surface workers. -

Production at the colliery quickly our School is today. Unfortunately the colliery is ourished and its average weekly output soon reached best remembered for the second biggest mining 12,000 tons. In South Wales there was a huge amount of coal beneath the ground, including our school site. Mines were opened all over South Wales. The Albion colliery was opened in 1887 by the Albion Steam Coal Company. Coal was transported to parts of the UK and around the world. At this time Cardi became the biggest port in the world. Mines were sunk to begin the Albion Colliery in 1884 on the site of Ynyscaedudwg Farm. Land was owned by the Albion Steam Coal Company and the colliery opened in Page 2 CILFYNYDD IN 1875... Situated on the banks of the River Ta, the village was named after Cilfynydd farm, which was on the east side of the valley. Cilfynydd Farm was farmed by the Lloyd family, most recently Gwun and Lewis Lloyd, who are now both deceased. -

" " THE STORY OF GLAMORGAN is a modified form of a prize essay at the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales, Mountain Ash, 1905. It has been re-written, and put in a more readable form for schools and the general public. The book deals with the county in districts chiefly districts lying within the several river basins with further chapters dealing with general geographical and historical facts. All the more important towns and industrial centres have special chapters devoted to them. The best books on Glamorgan have been consulted, and every care has been taken to ensure accuracy both in the information given and the maps and plans that illustrate the text. The writer here desires to acknowledge his great indebtedness to the works of previous writers on the subject. Thanks are also due for photographs lent by the Great Western and Messrs. Barry Railway Companies ; H. W. Wills, Cardiff; J. Storrie, Cardiff; Fred Evans, W. F. and Llangynwyd ; Dinsley, Manchester; D. Jones, Cymmer. Coal mining communities across Britain have often been argued to have possessed powerful collective memories of past struggles, though such memories have, as yet, been little studied. This thesis is a study of the collective memory of the interwar years within the mining communities of south Wales, and explores the ways in which the great strikes and lockouts, underground accidents, the interwar depression, and clashes with police and strike-breakers were remembered by the men and women of the coalfield. Using nearly 200 oral history interviews that were recorded in the 1970s, alongside newspapers, political and trade union records, novels and other sources, this study examines collective remembering as a reciprocal interaction between the public representations of the past, and the memories and attitudes of individuals. -

Characterisation of individual study sites. Executive Summary The pivotal role of coal mining in shaping the British way of life cannot be underestimated. For centuries coal mining has been an essential part of British industry and many regions were dependent on it, particularly South Wales. Coal was dug from the ground by generations of miners, and the spoil hauled and tipped on the surrounding valley sides. While many signs of this once thriving industry have now gone, with colliery buildings demolished and shafts capped, the colliery spoil tips have remained. Once considered eye-sores in the landscape, they have undergone a truly remarkable transformation. In the decades that have followed the demise of deep coal mining in Wales, nature has acted. The colliery spoil tips, once symbols of an ecologically destructive industry, have been colonised by a wide variety of species and habitats. Diverse and intricate mosaics of heathland, flower-rich grassland, species-rich lichen and moss communities, scrub, woodland and wetlands now clothe the once bare ground. -
