In January, I got to do something really fantastic! I was invited to go and talk on the BBC Stoke Breakfast Radio. This happened because the presenters were talking about someone who had got all of their scout badges, and if someone in the local area had done it as well they would get them on the radio. My scout leader heard this and phoned in to say I had done this when I was in Cubs and they put me on the radio! When I got there I saw people doing recordings that were going on live and I could see the presenters in the studio. It was quite a big building although the studio wasn’t as big as I expected. I was feeling very excited because I got to go on the radio however, I felt a bit nervous because it was going to be live so if I made a mistake or forgot what to say then everyone would know straight away! They called my name on the radio for when I was going to go on and then when it was my turn, they took me through a room with all the computers and into the recording room, which looked like this: The presenters were called Liz and John and they were really nice and made me feel welcome, and my interview lasted about 5 minutes. The recording started ok, but then they asked me some questions that were different than I was expecting which was a BIG SURPRISE, but I kept on going and answered them as best I could. Also at the end I got to send a ‘hello’ message to any of my friends and the school even got a mention! Travel & Tourism On Friday 11 January, 21 Travel and Tourism students headed off to Heathrow at 4.45 am to take part in a SEP British Airways safety course. We arrived at the BA training school at 8.45 ready to be put through our paces, following the same procedures as cabin crew and pilots. After an interesting hour following a presentation on the jobs available and how to apply, we went into the training school itself. First, we learnt how to deal with pilot incapacitation then we moved onto the evacuation slide. After donning our overalls, we were given instruction and the allowed to use the slide and then down we went. Mrs Jackson and Miss Darlington were really disappointed that they were not allowed a go – however they looked very fetching in their overalls. Then we moved on to the life rafts where we were instructed in the procedures, we then entered and pulled over the cover. After lunch we moved into a 747 cabin, where we took it in turns to give the safety demos and learn all the correct hand and arm actions – it was not as easy as it looks. Then outside we went to put out galley fires and assess a smoke-filled cabin in our smoke hoods. Page 2 ontracknews Amelia gears up for cycle challenge Amelia Sheardown (Year 12) has just taken on the challenge of her life! She joined her mum (Andrea) on a gruelling cycling trip through Vietnam and Cambodia in aid of the charity, AMMF, the UK’s only cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) charity. Just a few years ago at the age of 44 Amelia’s mum was given just weeks to live as she was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer. She underwent major surgery and six months of chemotherapy and now there is just no stopping her! Following on from her last challenge – climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Andrea said “I wanted to achieve something of equal significance in which friends and family might also participate”. “Just as my son Sam was able to join me on the Kilimanjaro climb last year, I was delighted and excited at having Amelia cycle with me this year; having my daughter join me for what was the cycle ride of our lives, is what continues to spur me on.” Andrea and Amelia endured temperatures of 39°C and 80% humidity when they took on the gruelling challenge, cycling a total of 450km along with a team of 16 supporters, dubbed Andrea’s AMMF Army. Amelia added: “This was the furthest I’ve ever cycled and whilst it was a massive challenge, knowing what my mother has been through in her experience with cholangiocarcinoma, was in my thoughts every pedal of the way. “I am so proud to be able to support her ambitious fundraising target to help fund the fight against this cancer.” Altogether Andrea and her AMMF Army have helped raise more than £42,000 for the charity, which is dedicated to tackling the world’s second most common primary liver cancer. They had the opportunity to explore a variety of dance styles ranging from Indian Dance to Street Dance. They then selected their own style to research, building a piece of group choreography that captured the stylistic features of their chosen genre. The results were superb and we had representations of Irish, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Street, Charleston, Musical Theatre, Jazz and lots more. We were so impressed by the quality of the work that we decided to run our very first Year 9 Inter-form Dance Competition. Each class anonymously voted for two groups to represent them and on Wednesday 19 December, each form were represented in the com- petition. The judging panel consisted of Mrs Heywood and myself, Miss Davies and Kate Whitehead [Y13 A Level Dance stu- dent] and we had a number of prize categories that were up for grabs. The winners were as follows: Most Entertaining Dance: Freya Dooks & Charlotte Wright [90] Charleston Duet Most Technical Dance: Maddie Pickersgill [9A] Ballet Solo Most Creative Dance: Charlotte Andrews [9H] Street Solo Overall Winners: Bethany Houghton & Rosie Dyson [9S] Contemporary Duet A huge congratulations to everyone who represented their form and look out for Year 7 and Year 8 Inter-form Dance competitions coming soon…… Mrs Hughes Page 4 ontracknews 2019 Regent Dance Festival On Wednesday 16 January our Year 10 GCSE dancers along with talented dancers from other years performed at the Regent Theatre; in their annual youth Dance festival ‘019 Dance’. This year’s theme was Hope. The GCSE class open our performance with creative work inspired by one of the set works ‘Shadows’ by Christopher Bruce. The performance group then explored the idea of the journey to their dreams and then we finished the show all together celebrating differences and being proud of who we are. On the day of the performance we were lucky enough to be asked to be live on BBC Radio Stoke which was a very exciting opportunity. As part of the experience we also went back stage in the theatre to do our technical run with sound, lighting and dance, all whilst being photographed by a professional company. It was an extremely enjoyable afternoon and evening and it was lovely to see so many parents coming to support the event. Mrs Heywood The students were all amazing and here are a few of their comments about the event: I adored the day as the radio was a brand new experience for me which I enjoyed every second of and never wanted to leave. The dance show was awesome too and has built my confidence and love for performing on a big stage- I would 100% do it again. Mia Checkman Year 10 The day at the Regent was a great experience. My favourite part was our routine to Jess Glynne’s ‘Thursday’ as it was when the whole group got to perform together – it was a lot of fun. Aelish Terry Year 10 I really enjoyed working with the older girls because it gave me more confidence, new friends and opportunities came with the trip too. Kimberley Jackson Year 8 The experience was amazing, being able to discuss dance on Radio Stoke and when we performed on stage the feeling was great because of the adrenaline making the opportunity so good. Thank you to the Dance Department. Ellè Cullen Year 10 Page 5 ontracknews Proud of our Young Carers Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College recognised the hard work of their Young Carers recently by rewarding them with a special lunch in the school restaurant. They were joined by Headmaster, Mr Leigh who said that “The carers were a delight to talk to and very positive about the support they were receiving here in school.” Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College have 41 identified Young Carers, all of whom are invited to the support group at lunchtime on a Tuesday and this time is utilised positively. Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College work closely with Cheshire Young Carers in providing Young Carer Assessments for their students. Bespoke support programmes are then put in place for their students upon the results of the assessment. Cheshire Young Carers have stated that Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College are the only known school in Cheshire to have a designated Young Carers group which provides specialist and individual care and support for their students.

THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal James Tomlinson NEWSLETTER No. 371 – MARCH 2018 (2) Wednesday 28 March 2018 – Meeting The society extends a warm welcome to this evening’s speaker, Adrian Aymes, on his return to the Society. He first addressed members in September 2000, during his benefit year. ADRIAN NIGEL AYMES was born in Southampton on 4 June 1964, and attended Bellemoor School. He came late to first-class cricket. He joined the Hampshire staff when 21 years of age in 1986 but did not gain a regular place until he finally displaced Bob Parks some four years later. He gave notice of what was to follow on his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval in 1987. With Hampshire in trouble, he battled to 58 not out. Subsequently, no player in the first-class game during the 1990s sold his wicket more dearly. He was undefeated in a high proportion of his innings, which spoke volumes for his technique, temperament and sheer cussedness. With Robin Smith, he became the beating heart and consciousness of the Hampshire batting. If he took root and dug in, Hampshire were generally assured of a competitive total. All of his eight centuries were made in adversity. Of all Hampshire’s wicket-keepers, only his successor, Nic Pothas, has a higher batting average. He was a passionately proud professional, and never gave less than his best. He was fortunate to keep wicket to two of the genuinely great bowlers in the history of the game. At the start of his career, he stood back to the incomparable Malcolm Marshall; latterly, he kept to the unique Shane Warne.

Their opening bowlers Zara Matthews and Hannah Jones both recorded 1-8 in eight overs and Amna Malik and Stacey Miles were their main wicket takers. Perhaps fearing further interruptions, Mishel Jeena led the way as they raced to their revised target in less than one-third of the available overs. Porthill Park 234-2 (40; Evelyn Jones 138*, Lucy Yates 51*, Tilly Buss 2-47) (25pts) Chester Boughton Hall 82 (31; Beth Nicholson 11, Amy Griffiths 3-12, Emily Stones 2-2, Ellie-Mae Davies 2-7) (3pts) • Porthill Park recorded a resounding win to ensure that the title race at least went to the final day. For much of the season, an innings of 125 by Evelyn Jones was the league's highest score of the season, until Oakmere's Dawn Prestidge made 134 on the Bank Holiday weekend. Here though Jones went back to the top spot with another superb innings - Prestidge and Jones are amongst the league players who previously made it to England's second team Academy squad and are well ahead of their nearest rivals as division one’s leading run scorers this year.
