Adler and Sullivan Initially Achieved Fame As Theater Architects
Adler and Sullivan initially achieved fame as theater architects. While most of their theaters were in Chicago, their fame won commissions as far west as Pueblo, Colorado, and Seattle, Washington (unbuilt). The culminating project of this phase of the firm's history was the 1889 Auditorium Building in Chicago, an extraordinary mixed-use building which included not only a 3000-seat theater, but also a hotel and office building. Adler and Sullivan reserved the top floor of the tower for their own office. After 1889 the firm became known for their office buildings, particularly the 1891 Wainwright Building in St. Louis and the 1899 Carson Pirie Scott Department Store on State Street in Chicago, Louis Sullivan is considered by many to be the first architect to fully imagine and realize a rich architectural vocabulary for a revolutionary new kind of building: the steel high-rise. [edit] Sullivan and the steel high-rise Prior to the late 19th century, the weight of a multistory building had to be supported principally by the strength of its walls. The taller the building, the more strain this placed on the lower sections of the building; since there were clear engineering limits to the weight such "load-bearing" walls could sustain, large designs meant massively thick walls on the ground floors, and definite limits on the building's height. The development of cheap, versatile steel in the second half of the 19th century changed those rules. America was in the midst of rapid social and economic growth that made for great opportunities in architectural design. -

Retrieved from https://www.gilderlehrman.org/content/eyewitness-account-great-chicago-fire-1871 John R. Chapin, an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly, recounts his escape from the fire. He was asleep in his hotel room when he was woken up by a commotion in the hallway. He made his way out of the hotel and across the river, and from there he watched as families tried to save their belongings from the flames. The account by Chapin, combined with the illustrations, provided us with a vivid image of the desperation of the people as they tried to escape the fire. We see the crowds of people running with their belongings on their backs, while others stand there and watch the flames engulf buildings. From Our, Own Correspondent. "CHICAGO." This article is a firsthand account of the Chicago Fire provides a unique focus on the architecture of the city and the factors that caused the immense scale of the fire. Much of Southern Chicago was made up of wooden buildings, which burned quickly in the flames. However, to the North, large brick buildings stopped the spread of the fire. There is hope in the rebuilding process, as there are new policies and much of the debris has been removed. This article helped us because the focus on the building materials provides a clear explanation as to why the Chicago Fire reached such a large scale. -

Her M.A. thesis at the University of Chicago, in General Studies in the Humanities, The Architectural Style of Dankmar Adler, is dated September, 1963. Of course, her work on Adler had begun before that date, perhaps as early as 1961. In Chapter 9, footnote 23 of this book, she relates that she interviewed Adler’s surviving daughter, Sara Adler Weil, on June 27, 1962. She had been introduced to Mrs. Weil by one of her teachers, Prof. Edward Weil Rosenheim, himself a member of the family. She began her studies of Adler acknowledging that he had long been regarded as the lesser of the partners in the famous architectural firm, Adler & Sullivan. She recognized, as have others, that Louis Sullivan was a genius and that Adler, whatever his gifts may have been, lacked that spark. -

Vincennes Avenue Final Landmark Recommendation adopted by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, June 2, 2011 CITY OF CHICAGO Rahm Emanuel, Mayor Department of Housing and Economic Development Andrew J. Mooney, Commissioner Bureau of Planning and Zoning Historic Preservation Division The Commission on Chicago Landmarks, whose nine members are appointed by the Mayor and City Council, was established in 1968 by city ordinance. The Commission is responsible for recommend- ing to the City Council which individual buildings, sites, objects, or districts should be designated as Chicago Landmarks, which protects them by law. The landmark designation process begins with a staff study and a preliminary summary of information related to the potential designation criteria. The next step is a preliminary vote by the landmarks commission as to whether the proposed landmark is worthy of consideration. This vote not only initiates the formal designation process, but it places the review of city permits for the property under the jurisdiction of the Commission until a final landmark recommendation is acted on by the City Council. This Landmark Designation Report is subject to possible revision and amendment during the designation process. Only language contained within a designation ordinance adopted by the City Council should be regarded as final. EBENEZER MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH (ORIGINALLY ISAIAH TEMPLE) 4501 S. VINCENNES AVENUE BUILT: 1898-1899 ARCHITECT:DANKMAR ADLER PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANCE: 1898 - C.1930S The Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church was originally constructed in 1899 as a synagogue for the Isaiah Temple congregation. The building, in a refined variation of the Classical Revivial style, has a 1,200-seat auditorium and two-story attached classroom annex and was designed by pioneering architect Dankmar Adler. -

(Photo by Chicago Architectural Photographic Company) THE AUDITORIUM BUILDING Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway Chicago, Illinois Date of Completion: 1889 Architects: Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan Landmark Site: Part of Original Lot 5 and Original Lots 6, 7, 8, ~. and 10 in Block 9 in Fractional Section 15, Township 39 North, Range 14, East of the Third Principal Meridian. Adler and Sullivan Responsible for an overwhelming number of architectural innovations in style and engineering, Dankmar Adler and Louis Henri Sullivan proved a force to be reckoned with throughout their career. Sullivan's senior by twelve years, Adler was born in Germany in 1844. He came to the United States with his father ten years later, and received his elementary and high school education in Detroit. Showing an aptitude and interest in architectural drawing, his father apprenticed him in the office of John Schaefer, and a short time later he entered the office of E. Willard Smith. In 1861 the Adlers moved to Chicago where Dankmar found work as draftsman with Augustus Bauer. But the Civil War cut his stay here short and he enlisted for active duty in July 1862.
