It seems like only yesterday that we conducted our Tasmanian Team of the Century dinner in 2004, followed by our inaugural Hall of Fame induction dinner in 2005. This is just another example of how quickly a decade passes by when you work in an industry as dynamic as Australian Football. Over this decade 277 individuals have entered our Hall of Fame ‘club’ as inductees. We have elevated 40 of these men to Legend status and further elevated just 14 to become Icons of Tasmanian Football. To be one of just 14 Icons to have been identified in over 149 years of the game being played in Tasmania is very special indeed.

  • AFL Coaching Pathway
AFL coaching Pathway A guide for prospective Assistant and Development Coaches seeking employment with one of the 18 AFL clubs. October 2015 Prologue By Michael Malthouse Coaching is one of the most rewarding things a person can do, especially when you coach young people. To nurture and help shape young men and women as they become adults is also a very important function for the community. The way I see it, the greatest coaches in our game are better remembered by their players as men rather than just coaches. Johnny Leonard, Jack Sheedy and John Todd in WA. Jack Oatey, Fos Williams and Jack Cahill in SA. Norm Smith, Jock McHale and Dick Reynolds in Victoria. They were all wonderfully successful coaches whose players grew as men under their watch. I was lucky enough to play under Tommy Hafey and Allan Jeans and then to coach against some of the all-time greats, such as Ron Barrassi, Kevin Sheedy, Leigh Matthews, David Parkin and John Kennedy. I remember each of these wonderful coaches as great people first and foremost and I have carried many of their messages with me throughout my life. My players are still very important to me. The friendships with my players are the things I cherish most from my career as a coach. Great coaches care about their players as much off the field as on it. Great coaches are teachers and have empathy. Coaches of professional athletes have an even bigger responsibility, because the athlete only gets one chance at a career and the stakes are higher.

Tasmanian Legislative Council Select Committee Inquiry into AFL in Tasmania Submission from Russell Hanson 18th June 2019 Because of the history of Tasmanian football, in particular, from the creation of the AFL in 1990, there needs to be an understanding of just what has happened since then; what the AFL has done, or more correctly have not done. As I look at the honour board from my office it is a reminder of the incredibly rich history of the game here for over 150 years. This year’s inductees, legends and icon are no exception. Beyond the individuals recognised, we also look to celebrate legendary games, teams and club. This extension to our Hall of Fame is a great way to recognise moments and groups from history. It seems fitting that this event coincides with a new chapter for Tasmanian football, a chance to look back before we take our game forward. My team and I look forward to working with the broader Tasmanian community, acknowledging those who have afforded us all a great football history we can be proud of and draw on. Enjoy this round of football and, for those attending the dinner, I hope it is a time to reconnect with old friends, rekindle memories and relish stories of the past.
