Chemical Name: Diammonium hexanitratocerate Synonyms: CAS Number: 16774-21-3 CAS Name: Diammonium hexanitratocerate EC (EINECS) Number: 240-827-6 Document Number: GPS-17-16

• Ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate is used primarily in the production of semiconductors and as an oxidizing reagent in many oxidation-reduction titrations. Another application of this compound is its use as a catalyst in polymerization of olefins.

• The risk of exposure may occur in facilities and workplaces processing and handling ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate. Workers using this substance are at risk of exposure primarily via inhalation and skin contact and to a lesser extent with ingestion. Good manufacturing and industrial hygiene practices should be followed to prevent or reduce exposure. See the (SDS) for additional information.

• Ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate is an orange crystalline solid having a stinging odor. It is soluble in water. It is corrosive to metals. Materials which are incompatible with this substance include organic materials, powdered metals and reducing agents. Ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate is a powerful oxidizing agent and may intensify fire. Individuals should take precautions to avoid accidental contact of this substance with combustible materials or other substances which readily oxidize.

• Limited data on the toxicity of ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate indicate that it is only slightly harmful if swallowed resulting in gastric distress and nausea. This substance is corrosive to the skin and eye causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Repeated contact with the skin can result in allergic skin reactions.

• Ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate is not identified as a known or anticipated carcinogen by NTP, IARC, or OSHA.

• This product should not be allowed to enter the surrounding soil, waterways, drains and sewers. Based on evidence from ecotoxicological studies, it is considered to be very toxic to some forms of aquatic life.
