Washington’s Capitol Building and its surrounding campus make Olympia one of the nation’s most beautiful state capitals. The Capitol Campus is a year-round tourist destination and the Legislative Building is its centerpiece. Olympia visitors also can enjoy the Temple of Justice where the Supreme Court meets, the Governor’s Mansion, the Old Capitol Building and several veterans’ memorials situated on the 30-acre campus. Washington has one of the most open legislatures in the country. Every bill being considered by the House or Senate must be discussed in open hearings before the appropriate committees. The general public is encouraged to attend committee hearings and to testify on issues important to them. While words like “hearing” and “testify” may sound forbidding, they simply represent your opportunity to come to Olympia and tell lawmakers how you feel before action is taken on an issue.
