President, Gonzaga University 502 East Boone Avenue Spokane, WA 99258 Dear President McCulloh: My colleagues and I formally request Gonzaga University officials reconsider their decision to deny the request made by the university’s College Republicans to bring conservative, political commentator Ben Shapiro to the campus to speak. We are greatly disappointed in the university’s decision. Campuses should be places of rigorous, free debate that respects the marketplace of ideas from all people of race, religion, ethnicity or political views. Higher education institutions should welcome opportunities for students to hear people and ideas they have not yet fully considered. While Gonzaga University is a private institution, students are eligible for state financial aid. State taxpayer dollars should not be used to promote censorship. Your university website states: “Gonzaga’s Jesuit, Catholic, Humanistic education will challenge and inspire you.” Denying Mr. Shapiro the opportunity to speak runs contrary to this statement. Please allow Mr. Shapiro to challenge and perhaps inspire your students. It is also important to remember that Gonzaga University is surrounded by Republican Legislative Districts – including the 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th. It is also located in the middle of the 5th Congressional District, which is represented by a Republican. Many of the residents in these districts, including high school students who might be considering attending Gonzaga University, identify as conservative and want to hear the views of Mr. Shapiro. They also support free speech – regardless of political affiliation or beliefs. Please do not allow Gonzaga University to become an island of isolated political views.

We offer this comprehensive guide as a reference to help you find information on the candidates and statewide measures that appear on your ballot. This general election gives you the opportunity to have a say in our government at the local, state, and national levels, and to choose who will serve as our nation’s next president. In order to have your voice heard, you must be registered to vote. Voter registration forms that are mailed or completed online must be received by October 26, and we encourage you to check your registration information today at VoteWA.gov. If you are reading this message after October 26 and you are not registered, have moved since the last time you voted, or did not receive a ballot, you can go to your local elections office or voting center during regular business hours through 8 p.m. on Election Day to register to vote and receive a ballot. Once you have completed your ballot, you can send it via U.S. mail — no postage needed — but remember, all ballots must be postmarked by November 3. A late postmark could disqualify your ballot. This Corridor Sketch Summary acts as an executive summary for one corridor. Please review the User Guide for Corridor Sketch Summaries prior to using information on this corridor: SR 27: SR 278 Jct (Rockford) to 32nd Ave Int. (Spokane Valley) This 14-mile long east-west corridor in Spokane County is located in eastern Washington near the Washington/Idaho border. The corridor runs between the State Route 278 junction in the town of Rockford and the 32nd Avenue intersection in the city of Spokane Valley. The corridor passes through the small communities of Mica and Freeman. The corridor’s character is predominantly rural. The area south of Spokane Valley has low-density residential, commercial, and undeveloped land uses. In addition to single-family residences within Mica and Rockford, land uses are comprised of heavy industry, manufacturing, and wholesale retail. Other land uses throughout the corridor include agriculture and private- commercial forest. Freeman High School and the Freeman District Office are located in Freeman mid-corridor. One airport, Felts Field, is located to the northwest of the corridor. The entire corridor parallels the Union Pacific Railroad, crossing it at two locations north of Mica and in Rockford. Topography throughout the corridor is rolling. Current Function SR 27 is a state highway serving Whitman and Spokane counties, traveling through the cities of Pullman, Palouse, Tekoa, and Spokane Valley.
