Still more students supported Miracle Makers, which last year donated some $8,000 to benefit a Make a ishW child. Lafferty Fund Helps Donors and Heelan If you are a Heelan alum, friend or business that owes Iowa taxes, you can purchase tax credits that reduce your taxes dollar by dollar and help support the Bishop Heelan school system. Persons who donate to the Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation receive a 65 percent Iowa tax credit, plus a full federal charitable deduction. Donations to the foundation fund grants to help lower-income students attend Catholic school in Sioux City and other communities in the diocese. Timm Funk, CPA, a former school system board and finance committee member, says the Lafferty fund is a win-win program. “What surprised me was how much went to the school, and how much it reduced my state and federal taxes. In my case, 90 percent of what I contributed came back to me in reduced income taxes. “The benefits are that you can control where most of your state tax dollars go and you can help students who might not otherwise afford a great Catholic education. Ultimately, you feel good about helping our schools.” This year 609 students receive vital assistance to obtain a faith-based education in the Heelan system.

Heelan’s new Fine Arts Building opened in August to rave reviews from students, teachers, alumni and donors. “Is this heaven? Yes!” was written on the classroom board in Laurie Dougherty’s art room. In addition to daily classes the school building hosts music concerts, special assemblies, student dances, special speakers, art events, diocesan and faculty meetings, the fall play, Masses and more.

Helmet Sensors Show Hit Impacts Special impact sensors in football helmets helped 11 Heelan football players enjoy extra safety help during their 2014 season. Concussions in football have made national headlines based on the long-term damage frequent concussions can cause. The sensors attached inside helmets and sent instant wireless information to a smartphone app about a players’ hits and if a head impact could result in a concussion. Heelan’s team was one of 10 high school football teams in the country to receive the free Shockbox helmet sensors from Progressive Insurance. While a sensor can’t prevent or diagnose a concussion, it can send alerts when player has received a potentially serious hit, according to Dan Nelson, Heelan’s athletic trainer. It can help in evaluating a player for symptoms of a concussion, and help decide whether to send him back out on the field. Heelan was nominated to receive the sensors by Andy Foster, assistant activities director, after Heelan parent Micha Herbst alerted the school of her employer’s opportunity. “While form tackling is stressed and taught in our program, concussions occur,” Foster says. “Last year we treated over a dozen concussions. Thousands of Heelan graduates have learned important reading, writing and English fundamentals under the teaching guidance of Pat Sitzman, a 25-year veteran of Heelan. In October she was honored for 45 years of teaching in Sioux City Catholic schools with an Award of Excellence from the Diocese of Sioux City. Sitzman embraces her laptop in the classroom, but still remembers (and likes!) the smell of mimeograph machines. She and her husband, Deacon Larry, ’65, the media center manager of the Sioux City Diocese, have five adult children and 5 grandchildren.

Where are your five Heelan alumni children today? Scott ’92, is a pharmacist in Ames; Robert ’93 is co-manager of Hobby Lobby in Sioux City; Michelle is a teacher in Cresco; Lisa ’98 is a school counselor; and Michael is a police officer.

How did you begin your career in teaching? I went to Catholic grade schools and attended Heelan for two years then graduated from Lawton. I went on to Briar Cliff and later earned my Master of Arts in English from USD. I knew I wanted to teach in Catholic schools. I always knew there was something different, something special.

When did you come to Heelan? I came in 1989 after teaching in middle school for 20 years. I just got amazed by Heelan and it’s totally part of me.

Talk about your background. I had 17 siblings. I went to five Catholic grade schools, Immaculate Conception, Cathedral, St. Boniface, St. Joe’s and St. Michael’s. What was notable about high school? High school kids want to succeed. Despite what they say, they still want to impress their parents. They want to look cool and be on their own and impress their friends. But at the same time they want their parents to be proud of them. You can see it. I like it when kids come with their parents to conferences.

Comment on today’s high school students. Kids will always be kids. They are more technologically savvy today, but they still have strange senses of humor. They are so willing to open up and talk. They want to learn. Our kids know they’re going onto college. It used to be that a high school degree was enough. In 1981, Jeff ‘76 and erriT (Larson) Ingrum ’77 packed their car with dreams of Jeff playing for the Denver Broncos. He was first team all conference at Heelan, and set football records as a receiver at Wayne State College in Nebraska. She had been a basketball athlete at Heelan. They had a small child, a college education and ambition. It folded after their arrival. The couple scrambled. They found jobs at Skate City, a family-friendly skating rink in Littleton, Colo. He was a janitor. She worked the snack counter. “We spent every dime we had to get out here,” Jeff says. “We came out with nothing. We were working at the roller rink as the cleaning guy and the snack bar girl.” Today the two Heelan grads own Skate City rinks in seven cities in Colorado and one in Albuquerque, N.M. They also own a roller hockey center, a television production company, a video game and arcade company, transportation company, a print shop and marketing company, a heating and air conditioning firm and over a dozen other spin-off businesses. The Ingrum’s core business – the skating rinks – thrive on school events, birthday parties and family- focused fun. The rinks sponsor 15,000 birthday parties a year. Each one has a school marketing person, operations manager and a hockey director. “We work with over 500 schools in the state of Colorado,” Jeff says. “Schools endorse us because there is a physical fitness aspect of skating.” The couple make sure that rinks reach out to disadvantaged children with free transportation and more.

Working as a Team “We both have a competitive edge,” says Terri, a first-team, all state basketball player at Heelan. “When we added our second rink, we made it competitive in a fun way. For years I ran one and he ran another one. We would try to outdo each other in gross incomes and how many people skated.” Terri also handled music choices for their rinks, listening closely to top songs every week so she could pick “clean” versions of songs. Not always the easiest task. On many days Terri and Jeff brought their three sons to work with them and enjoyed the business as a family. “We’re very proud of creating activities where parents can interact and have fun with their children,” Jeff says. “We’ve been in the business so long that kids will come back and thank us for Jeff ’76 and Terri Larson Ingrum ’77 have built a family fun business of memories and bring their children.” skating rinks and more in Colorado.

Support School Choice in Iowa Bishop Heelan asks for your support of Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) in Iowa in 2015. ESAs allow parents not enrolling their child in a public district or charter school to receive a deposit of public funds into a government-authorized savings account to cover K-12 private school tuition, tutoring, and other qualified education expenses. Parents need a maximum number of options during their child’s educational development, and all Iowans agree that a quality education is vitally important. Iowa Alliance for Choice in Education believes parents are best suited to choose the most effective educational method for their children. If you are an Iowa taxpayer, tell your legislator you support a parent’s right to choose the best school for their child. Learn more at www.iowaace.org.
